I finally got around to looking at his stats. We should grab him. Hell, we should make a trade for him if we have to.

Belli ruled last year, posting a .817 OPS and knocking out 17 HR. He reached base at a .373 clip. Now, he also struck out a lot, but that doesn't bother me in the slightest.

He's been average at best this season, but average is WAY better than Cairo/Matsui, and his H/A splits are kind of fucked up:

After rocking at Fenway last season (.874 OPS v. .758 on the road), Bellhorn has a susprising reverse split--.809 on the road v. .553 at home.

That's just crazy. Over on the SoSH board, I read that Youkilis (apparently his closest friend on the team) thought he was unduly affected by the incessant booing from the fans. Of course, I immediately thought of K-Mat--perhaps a swap of struggling 2B boo-bird victims and we throw in enough cash to offset the salary difference? After all, the Sox were interested in him this past offseason.

Unfortunately, we can't trade Matsui right now because he failed to clear waivers, although I suppose we could try again . . .

At any rate, Bellhorn would represent a pretty clear upgrade at 2B for us even if he didn't improve at all, and if he really IS unduly affected by the boo-birds at Fenway, he might turn into Bellhorn 2004 for us--which would be one of the best 2B in baseball.

Plus, if we DO trade Matsui for him, Mets fans will cheer the hell out of him even if he sucks the rest of the year.

Oh, and he's supposedly quite good defensively.

Agreed. I'd take Bellhorn for the rest of the year... for a guy who strikes out a lot, he really knows how to get on base.

On Matsui - I think once you try to put someone through waivers, that's it. You can't do it again this year. Maybe they'll take Glavine if we throw in some money?

From what I remember from watching Bellhorn, he is very streaky at bat and has limited range in the field (Todd Walker anyone?).
Of course, that puts him light years better then Cairo.

A looksee wouldn't hurt.

I think it'd be pretty fucking hilarious if Bellhorn propelled the Yankees over the Sox in the East.

Cano has sucked lately, and Bellhorn could get a lot of playing time, especially if he gets off on the right foot.

As I understand it, the Yankees would have had to pass on Bellhorn before we could claim him. Is that correct?

No, he cleared waivers; he was an open signing. There was talk he was going to Oakland, which didn't surprise me, because Billy Beane loves his high-OBP guys. But apparently not.

It would be funnier if Bellhorn struck out or ground into a double play in a key spot that ends a Yankees rally and keeps them out of the playoffs.

Must admit, Bellhorn and Lawton should be good pickups for the MFYs.

Now, if only Bellhorn and Lawton both suck like a pair of industrial strength Hoovers, I'll be satisfied.

As Bellhorn rarely ever grounds into a DP, the latter option is not likely.

And as fans of a team with Miguel Cairo at 2B, we shouldn't be laughing about anybody's second baseman. The Mets blew it here.
