huh. Terrible trade for the Nats. Wilson's hitting .224/.280/.411/.691 away from Coors Field this season, and has a hefty .726/.991 R/L split.

Of course, I also thought all their offseason moves were terrible, so I'm sure the Nats will somehow wind up with the best record in baseball after the signing . . .

I won't miss losing to Zach Day, and perhaps, his sinker works at Coors. But it was very obvious this week the Nats need offensive help even worse than we do, if that's possible, so this appears to be more or less fair to me.

Let's not get ridiculously All-Purpose: It's news. If I found it first, I'd have given it its own thread.

IIRC he had hit the Mets fairly well for power throughout his career, especially at Shea.

I kinda like this deal from a Nats standpoint. They need hitting more than pitching and it's not like Day has even been there for them for over a month now. And, although I confess to knowing little about Davis, he is a former 1st round pick by Pittsburgh (1997 - 6th overall) but is almost 27 w/only pieces of 4 seasons in the majors. Sounds like he may have been a high prospect at one time, but not sure he is anymore.

Preston's certainly erratic and overpaid (tho they won't pay all of it anyway) but maybe he performs well enough and even likes it back on the east coast and hangs around past this year.

According to my Colorado-based brother, who's so down on the Rockies he makes me look like a fanatical Met fan in comparison, the Rockies need to adopt a policy of getting little-used pitchers in mid-season, even at prohibitive costs, because Coors just wears out pitchers' arms. Any tweaking of the park itself (raising fences, lengthening the field, adding foul territory, etc.) still leaves the altitude, which is an insurmountable obstacle to a stable pitching staff. So acquiring (every season!) pitchers who haven't thrown a lot of innings by mid-season is (according to him) the only sensible solution.

Of course, the Rockies pay as little attention to his ideas as the Mets do to mine, so this may just be a coincidence.

i kinda liked the alternating home/road staves, myself, with each tailored to their specific tasks - namely, take a bunch of pitchers who seem to be effective at altitude, and keep em there. go on the road, and use your sea-level pitchers. and of course, mix things up come extended home or road trip.

would it work, prolly not. but itd sure be different.

Well, the Rox would need to keep a AAA staff at Colorado Springs, DL pitchers at the drop of a hat, maintain a 14-man pitching staff at all times, and it prolly still wouldnt work--but what has, for them?

Actually, it makes more sense to keep a AAA staff in western Kansas, which is as close as western Colorado but less altitude--no sense burning out your AAA staff's arm as as your MLB staff.
