Luis Torrens, backup catcher with demonstrable utility despite currently rocking a .200 batting average and a .467 OPS, has been reportedly rewarded on this, his 30th birthday, with a two-year extension.

The contract, covering the 2027 and 2028 seasons, is reportedly worth $11.5 million over the two years.

A good extension.  Truthfully, Torrens is  just as deserving of starting behind the plate as is Alvarez in my opinion.

Torrens has a .785 OPS against lefties this year, and a .723 OPS against them for his career.  That's good enough to make him a must-play with his defensive value.  I think holding on to both him and Alvarez was smart.

For all of Stearns’ missteps, we can note that (1) acquiring Torrens (for nothing more than cash) and (2) extending Torrens are looking good.
