Edgy MD Site Manager Posted yesterday at 02:08 AM Posted yesterday at 02:08 AM The Mets saw in the possibilities of their opening game against the Nationals the prospect of the serious professional endangerment of their manager. On the other hand, they saw the tantalizing image of third place only three and a half games ahead of them. And for one glorious night, they pummeled their opponents without mercy. They crushed their enemies, saw their foes driven before them, and heard the lamentation of their women. This, amazingly, has left the 2026 Mets undefeated in division play. As unlikely as an entry into contention seems, one advantage they have is that virtually all of the intradivisional schedule lies before them. The other advantage they have as they deploy lefthander David Peterson against Cade Cavalli in Game Two? With Juan Soto nursing a strained forearm and Luis Robert, Jr. hampered by a stiff back? That second advantage is you!

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted yesterday at 12:55 PM Posted yesterday at 12:55 PM In Cade Cavalli's lone career appearance vs the Mets he threw 5 shutout (5 hits) innings last September 20 in a game that was one of the daggers ultimately causing the end of that season to bleed out. The Nats led early getting three runs (1 earned) off McLean. Finally, with the Nats odds of winning at 95%, back to back 8th inning/two-out doubles by Marte and Vientos brought in two runs. When a Soto single w/one out in the 9th tied it the odds of a Mets win were now up to 83% as Marte & Nimmo were due up with one out and bases loaded ... they both K'd on four pitches. The Mets then did squat with two ghost runner innings and lost the game on Daylen Lile's 2R inside-the-park HR in top 11 (clip of it shown in last night's game) MFS62 1

And, yet, would that game make the 'Top Ten Most Miserable Losses of Late 2025' list. Probably, but there'd be some stiff competition. Upon further review: the way the Nats scored those early runs just might secure this game 'Top Five' most miserable status. Top 1st: Walk; K; WP; Bloop single (1st & 3rd), GO but couldn't turn DP. 1-0 Nats Top 2nd: IF Single; Single + E9 (Soto) runner scores from 1st/batter to 3rd; E-3 (Alonso) runner doesn't advance but now 1st & 3rd/still no outs; K; K; WP/run scores; GO So that's one BB, two wild pitches, two errors, two soft singles, and one DP not turned resulting in three runs in just the first two innings. On the offensive side the Mets out-hit the Nats 11 to 6 but left 11 on base (including two ABs w/bases loaded/tie game/bottom 9th), and were 3/16 w/RiSP

seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted 16 hours ago Posted 16 hours ago Let's make this the Tyrone Taylor Game, kid.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted 16 hours ago Author Posted 16 hours ago All the lefthanded batters reached for the Mets in the bottom of the first. All the righties made out.
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted 16 hours ago Posted 16 hours ago Francisco Alvarez sucks, let him be some other team's reclamation project
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted 16 hours ago Posted 16 hours ago At least, in contrast to many other Peterson games where once he started down a bad path he could never right the ship, here he a couple of very clean second and third innings. And now b-2-b HR days for Juan
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted 16 hours ago Posted 16 hours ago Soto with another opposite field HR

Tonight, MJ bats third. I guess the problem I truly has is that after Bichette and Soto, there just isn't much to choose from. Mendoza can shuffle the order all he wants, but it's still a weak hand with few proven hitters. The majority of the line up is hitting between .190 and .225. Actually Melendez (a career .216 hitter) is probably the most dangerous hitter the Mets have to offer after Bichette and Soto.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted 15 hours ago Posted 15 hours ago Grand Slam for the Nats , and more hits ,9-1
Marshmallowmilkshake Old-Timey Member Posted 15 hours ago Posted 15 hours ago Well this went to hell in a hurry. The Hot Corner 1
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted 15 hours ago Posted 15 hours ago So today Mendoza can be blamed Both for leaving Peterson in too long and for pulling him too soon.
