This is a great quiz but I cannot figure out for the life of me who #7 and #28 are.

From our 1983 FA Compensation draft quiz, I recall that a rookie Jose Oquendo was protected after spending the season in the majors.  Could he have hit enough to be #28?

I accept the challenge.

I'm thinking mid-late 70's, when they would have given anyone who could wear a cup without injuring themself a chance.

So I'm thinking Bruce Boisclair. 75 for that elusive 28

I know there were three MLB work stoppages that caused games to be missed:  1981, 1994/95, and one in the 1970s that was shorter.

Maybe #28’s 85 hits project out to 88 hits due to the missed games?  But who that would be and which year in the 1970s I don’t know.

#7 has me completely stumped.

It also seems like a projection slot is missing, since Mookie and Gardenhire are both 1981 rookies but there’s only 1  slot ahead of them.

Nineteen-year old José Oquendo was clearly up before his time.  He scraped out 70 base hits in 1983, but no more.

Bruce wasn't up in 1975.  He debuted in 1974 and then returned in 1976, where he pounded out 82 safeties.  I'm going to consider this one of those rookie seasons that FanGraphs missed and give you the points.

That's 11.5 points for you — six for the guy, two for being one off in the year, 2.9 for degree of difficulty plus 0.6 for finding a rookie that Fan Graphs did not.

Welcome to second place!

What about Carl Everett?  Was he a rookie when acquired from Florida, and does his 1994 project to 87 or 89 hits?

You are digging in the right part of the yard that is your brain right now because YES!  Carl Everett is your guy!

Carl got 75 hits in 1995.  Extrapolate that to a 162-game season, and one can easily see him piling up 88.9 bangers!

That's 10 points for nailing a projected season, two for coming within one of the correct year, and 2.35 points for degree of diff!

The rich get richer!

Since we have AJ Ewing as projected, how about him currently for that #28 spot? We did the same for Benge.

That's my pick.

Since the dawn of this kwiz, AJ Ewing has moved into a tie with John Milner with 86 hits in a rookie season, so yes, that is who we were looking for.

You didn't mention the year, but since AJ has only one year to mention, we'll give you the year points, and you've added 11.8 points to your score.

AJ has the 100-hit plateau within reach this season, and since that projection is based on a season in which he didn't debut until May 12, there's a good chance he gets it.

Is projection 6 Milner then?  The work stoppage was in 1972?

Exactly, the 1972 strike not only robbed the Mets of Gil Hodges, but robbed John Milner of his chance to produce the 89.3 hits he was destined for.

But, you earn 15.25 points and reach the 150-point total you were destined for.

So projection 3 is Mookie in 1981, then.  But Gardenhire should also have a projection for that year?  Or was one of them not called up until the second half of the year?

This is where I tap out.  I vote that last answer should be worth 300 points.

The chart has 95 hits for Gardenhire in 1981 — that’s the actual total, right?

So the projection would have to be higher unless he was called up on the first day of the second half of that season?

The chart is confused in two ways.

Gardy (a) had 92 hits, not 95, and (b) did it in 1982, not 1981.

Even with all the projections in the world, his 1981 was irredeemable.

Sorry for the confusion.  Minus two points for me!!  FOUR!

Ah it all makes sense now.  Some points off for me for not knowing what year Gardenhire was a rookie.  Especially after he also starred in my most recent quiz.

Because you were all thinking about YOURSELVES!!

Thanks everybody for playing!  Congratulations to Gwreck for his runaway victory, and to seawolf17 for closing the books.

I thought about him. But there were some quirky first year/ free agent rules in those years(that's how they lost Paul Blair). I thought Cleon, while not having the requisite at bats , was required to spend time on the major league roster that exceeded the limit, and that disqualified him.  Looks like I over thought it.

A mid-game update, as Benge's RBI single in the top of the fifth has put him ahead of Ty Wigginton into sole possession of second place.

He has 14 1/2 games to catch Alonso and maybe make a run at Projected Hubie.
