They have two guys coming back from injury and two guys pushing hard at Syracuse. I realize that those are different degrees of sub-optimal bets, but I get the idea that they were mostly happy with their options, as compared to what was available, and hope to get quality out of that quantity.

That's a fair point: if Stearns et al. adjudged the top pitching prospects too valuable to deal, that's perfectly justifiable. But it's now clearly become time to deploy those assets at the major league level.

Those shouldn't be considered serious options. Blackburn has never been good in his entire career and in fairness, Megill hasn't either except in occasional short spurts.

I do not think the Mets see the grass being greener.

The Stearns era has been marked well by a propensity to get what they can out of short-term pitchers until younger options emerge. They believe in the work they've put into their development, and they populate the rotation with guys who won't get in the way when the developing guys show.

It is fraught with risk, but I think that is what they are doing. Kelly can help any team, and he is a short-term commitment, but I imagine they did not like the long-term cost Arizona was wanting.

The Rangers traded their #5, #9, and #13 prospects for Kelly. With all disclaimers about it not being a perfect comparison, that's roughly in the neighborhood (maybe slightly higher) of what Stearns was giving up for the three rentals he did acquire.

I'm not 100% sold on this always being the the best way to have high-level success but I do recognize it is an organizational philosophy. And I want it to make sense. Montas shouldn't be starting when that spot comes up this weekend. If this is the philosophy, then it's clearly the time to deploy those high-level prospects at the major league level.

* * *

And, of course, the Montas/not trading for Kelly situation aside, this is still a team that's far behind their competitors in offense, and that's a problem that's not even close to having been adequately addressed

There is nothing wrong with giving either McLane or Tong a start. They won't break

Maybe Stearns has thought of this and did not go after an SP

.

For all of the money spent on this team it seems foolish not to acquire a reliable effective starter for the stretch

I have no problem with the philosophy. But a commitment to a guy trying to refind his form like Severino is ok. So is a high floor guy like Quintana.

But Montas was a a head scratcher from the beginning. Injury risk. Not very good when healthy. Just a WTF signing.

Blackburn is a rare Stearns double down. Made no sense to trade for him last year and was an obvious non-tender guy this past winter.

Running him out there in 2025 was a mistake. If he sees another appearance it's malpractice.

I have some hope for Megill none for Blackburn

I see Charlie Morton throw a gem and wonder why not for us

Detroit gave up Micah Ashman. He was an 11th round pick in 2022

It was not an offer difficult to beat

Yes, much cash was sent to Baltimore

While I'm at it Soto is overrated, very little hustle and in no way a leader. His numbers are good not great

Well, it ain't like he saw one today.

Yes. But he was in one Friday night in a game where we had compiled a super pen and were coming off an off day. He gave up a run. We lost in extras.

The team is struggling. You can't have the manager making things worse.

Mendy also started Tyrone Taylor, even though Mullins has reverse splits this year, and good numbers against Ray. And of course the PH of Vientos.

Montas is a sunk cost (2 yr/$34mil), so I have to believe they'll run him out there again hoping for the best (and not getting it).

My guess is that they would hope to fix him well enough to be able to use him in Butto's role as the long man out of the pen. He's grossly overpaid for that role but it'd be less embarrassing for management to do that than to cut bait on him.
