Injuries in the high minors and his early years in the majors led to several false starts to Jay Payton's career. He was 27 or so by the time he finally established himself, and he had either aged or injuried out of a lot of prospect lists.

There was certainly still reason to hope he'd have a good career (which he did) but many of these lists cut off at 25 or so.

No to all.

These last two are hard. One of them I recognized the name but would never have guessed it on my own. The other I have never heard of.

Hints:

#7. RHP. Was involved in two Mets trades before making his MLB debut.

#10. OF. Never made the big leagues. Other than his name and his stats this is literally everything I know about him.

(sound of light going on)

He was in the (in)famous Mora for Bordick trade.

Pete's old, but not that old!

Damn, senility. I was only off by 20 years. Pete was probably the biggest kid on his Little League team back then.

Leslie Brea is the name I recognized (but never would have guessed). He arrived via trade for Butch Huskey. Then departed when Mike came A-Bordick.

The hardest answer remains. I honestly don't know if anyone can get this without looking. I'll give it until tonight and then tell you what his name rhymes with.

You tipped your hand just enough with the two-trade clue.

I still might have forgotten him but for that age-discrepancy thing. Passing yourself off as two years younger, borrowing your cousin's birth certificate ... I can see that.

Five years older? Sooner or later, somebody is going to see you in the daylight.
