I believe it's a Chevy Tahoe. I saw elsewhere it costs about $80k.

Al Leiter, Ray Knight and the estate of Donn Clendenon oughta be getting residuals.

I saw an article from the U.K. (the Daily Mail) pointing out concerns about Soto having developed a potbelly since the World Series ended.

What are the odds this is a Chevy thing ? Like did Soto actually slap down his card and pay for it ? Does Baty pay taxes ,or is this a gift ? How do these things work ?

From the IRS website:

Who pays the gift tax?

The donor is generally responsible for paying the gift tax. Under special arrangements the donee may agree to pay the tax instead. Please visit with your tax professional if you are considering this type of arrangement.

What is considered a gift?

Any transfer to an individual, either directly or indirectly, where full consideration (measured in money or money's worth) is not received in return.

I remember reading one time (likely during Christmas season) that buying a car for someone else as a gift is somewhat difficult.

It's certainly legal and possible, but there is a lot of red tape and forms involved.

Did Al Leiter have to buy number 22 from anyone?

Al's predecessor in #22 was Alex Ochoa who was conveniently traded off two months before Al's acquisition.

I don't think Al would pay for a number. I think he'd send somebody by your house and you and he would come to an understanding.

Is that why it's taking so long for Lindor to make good on the new wheels for Jeff McNeil?

A way around that for the average person is to buy the car and then sell it to the second person for a nominal price (e.g.- $1). I did this in Connecticut when I "sold" my car to my grandson. He had no problems registering the car.

There has to be a bill of sale (it can be hand written) and it has to show the buyer paid sales tax (whichever state in which the sale was conducted). The bill of sale has to be shown when the car is registered. I'm sure the ballplayer/seller's attorney will know if there are any other details.

I'm sure that Soto didn't have to do a goddamn thing other than signing some papers that his accountants, slaves and other underlings prepared for him, if even that much.

Yeah, the article I read was one in response to Xmas car commercials, 96% of which seem to involve someone being surprised by a brand new car in the driveway on Christmas morning.

'Cute, but not so easily done' was the gist of the piece.

I'm sure that Soto got to do the fun part of that deal -- going out, picking out, maybe even test driving the car he gifted to Baty. Maybe Soto even decided to pick himself up a spare Maserati or Lamborghini for a rainy day or for when his main ride breaks down while he was out there car-shopping.
