Up two games on ATL with eight to play. I don't know if there's more math to it but I'd suggest that this gives the Mets a magic number of 6 to clinch a wild card spot?

Right, forgot about that.

I feel like the Mets could go 5-3 and lock this up, in these last eight games. If they win the right five that is. Split these last two versus Philly and then take 2 of 3 each in Atlanta and Milwaukee. If they do that then Atlanta only has to lose one other game and they'd be done (again, if my math is true).

Or better yet they could just win their next four contests.

That would clinch the spot, because they'd pick up a minimum of two more games on ATL and they'd own the tiebreaker at that point.

OE: Had not thought about the Cubs, but they're currently 6.5 back with 7 to play, so they'd also be eliminated in that same scenario.

Yesterday's loss certainly wasn't without harm. Among other things, the Mets lost a share of the second Wild Card slot, bringing the need to TCB against the Braves more deeply into focus.

First order of business, of course, is winning today. If they are to chase the big prize, then they are likely to meet the Phils again.

Final regular-season home came of the year today. Time to say good-bye to your 2024 Mets, hoping you get to say hello again.

Speaking of hope, the Mets close the book on a long slate of lefties, and hope Jesse Winker hasn't gotten too much rust.

Ozzie Albies returned for the Braves yesterday, and it's a good time remember that he was having a pretty bad season before he got hurt. Marcel Ozuna and a resurgent Matt Olson are the Soto and Judge of that suddenly otherwise-not-so-elite-lineup.

The Braves have announced intent to use their off day today to skip Charlie Morton in favor of Max Fried.

This is not as easy a decision as all that. While Fried represents a young (30) gun versus and old (40) one in Morton, he's not had that great a year. Morton has had some success against the Mets, although the Mets have gotten to him two out of the three times they've matched up in 2024.

The Mets have overall handled righties better than lefties, but that's kind of changed as the season has progressed. Probably the right move, but I like to see their hand forced instead of the Mets'.

Also, the Brewers have used the off day to push Freedy Peralta back a slot in the rotation, which seemingly takes him out of the conversation for the season's last day, presumably setting him up to be the post-season opener.

Closing the season against the Brewers, it will be the third team this month (by my count) featuring a Metly brother. Having previously faced the Reds and Alexis Diaz, we now go up against the Braves and the (injured) Ronald Acuña, Jr., and the Brewers and Trevor Megill. Rather than get with that program, all the Phillies managed to field is the spawn of Roger Clemens.

I'm pretty sure I got this right, but please correct me if you spot any mistakes.

These are the possible postseason alignments as of this morning:

The Diamondback will miss Blake Snell. He pitched a gem yesterday against KC. They'll face Logan Webb, but the other two starters are nothing special. If the Mets stumble against the Braves, they'll need the DBacks to lose next weekend against San Diego.

Which means we need to make sure San Diego has something to play for, so let's hope they lose all 3 against the Dodgers this week.

The Mets would lose a tiebreaker to the Dodgers for the #4 seed. Granted, this would require Padres sweep of Dodgers, Arizona sweep of Padres, Rockies sweep of Dodgers, and Mets sweeps of Atlanta and Milwaukee, and Philly to win at least one game.

If all of the above happened and Philly lost out? The Mets would win the East and the #1 seed tiebreaker over San Diego.

Whichever team wins the series will also secure the tiebreaker. If the Mets win the series, however, they will have secured more than the tiebreaker -- they will have clinched a playoff spot, as well, thus rendering the tiebreaker as superfluous.

In other words, if the Mets secure the tiebreaker, they then automatically qualify for the playoffs.

So the Mets magic number is five, but really, they would clinch a playoff spot by beating the Braves twice.

If the Braves were to take two of three from the Mets, they'd still be one game behind the Mets in the standings, but with the tiebreaker now in their favor. In that case, the two teams would go into the last weekend of the season essentially tied, if not mathematically tied, because of the tiebreaker.

I'm not sure they'd be "essentially tied".

If the Mets win one of the three games in Atlanta, they would be 88-71, and the Braves would be 87-72.

That's still an advantage. Ignoring the Diamondbacks, if the Mets and the Braves went on to have the same record over the last three-game series, the Mets would win the playoff spot.

Yes. If the Braves won two of three from the Mets, they'd still have to do one game better than the Mets over the rest of the season.

Actually, that tiebreaker would not be meaningless even though the Mets would clinch a playoff spot by taking two of three from the Braves. The Braves could lose two of three to the Mets and still make the playoffs. The DBacks might collapse the rest of the way and end up being the odd team out, and the Braves could end the season in a tie with the Mets. In that case, the tiebreaker would give the Mets the fifth seed and the Braves the sixth seed.

A Mets sweep of the Braves, however, would guarantee that the Mets finish the season with a better record than the Braves and would moot that tiebreaker

That was a long, baseball-less Monday in our household, but we comforted ourselves with visions of a healing Francisco Lindor. Whether or not the Mets start Lindor all three games in Atlanta, the Mets could end up writing three different secondbasemen into the lineup card in three days. A lot of very interesting options with two lefties going against them in the series.

Our household is also not treating the Phils' clinching as official. As far as we're concerned, in the unlikely event that the Mets and Philadelphia finish with the same record, the Mets will be co-division champions, and any tiebreakers are in place only to determine playoff seedings.

The other exciting news from last night, as noted above, is the Mets gaining a half game on the Diamondbacks, who go into the final week of the season having locked up nothing, secured nothing, and virtually clinched nothing. All of America must become Giants fans.

Clinching in Atlanta takes on an added urgency for Carlos Mendoza's team, as that eight-run comeback suggests the Brewers may be clicking on more cylinders than the Mets.

Playoff baseball.

The Mets have announced their intent to use José Quintana to open the Milwaukee series. The Brewers are mum thus far.

The Giants are throwing a thus-far-unimpressive rookie Mason Black at the Diamondbacks, so that's one more reason for squeaks. Bad-assed name, though.

Severino is on schedule to go again in Game #162, but I hope he has volunteered for bullpen duty before then if so needed. It's all-hands-on-deck time.

This is the closest that can be gleaned from all the public commenting and insiders reports regarding who will be starters for the Mets and Braves (and Brewers) going forward. Obviously, this is a snapshot that is subject to change — change that can come from day to day or hour to hour.

One advantage the Mets have is that they are not trying to aggressively hide the #5 spot in the rotation, so if it comes down to the last game, it looks likely that the Braves will be looking to Chris Sale on short rest.

If this is the sequence for the Mets, on the other hand, they should be well rested all around, with Sean Manea ready to go in any playoff opener.

Chris Sale will actually be on extra rest.

Max Fried Friday. Outside of that, the Braves have not announced their rotation. I think their idea is to somehow get to Monday, then throw Sale and Schwellenbach against the Mets. I guess their feeling is that KC may have clinched by Saturday, and may be resting their starters.

It will be interesting to see how the Mets counter. It's possible that Sunday's game could be meaningless for the purposes of Mets/Braves. And depending on how the Diamondbacks, meaningless altogether. So you definitely don't burn a starter on that game.

Things may (likely) be meaningless for the Brewers this weekend too. A bullpen game could make sense Saturday or Sunday, and especially so if a clinch in advance of the DH Monday can't happen.

This also is a situation where the Mets are probably well served by keeping quietly publicly about their plans. Why give Atlanta more info?
