I'm more than a little disappointed that a Grote patch hasdn't been added to the Bud Harrelson patch on the Mets uni by now. You've got to time your death carefully, if you want it acknowledged, it appears.

Without getting into which of them was a more important figure, it seems to me that one of the automatic perks of being a Mets Hall of Fame Member would be a uniform memorial stripe or patch upon your death.

Wondering where they're gonna put the Jerry Grote memorial patch? There's some space on the players' butts, last I looked.

Thank you for reposting that. I was trying to paste together Grote patch content from multiple threads and I seem to have made a meal of it.

I think there's a lot of bureaucracy when it comes to uniform changes, but obviously patches can appear shortly after a sudden and unexpected death, so it can happen quickly enough if teams are willing to jump through the hoops.

It also seems that they give an office to guys like Horwitz just so stuff like this doesn't slip through the cracks, which it appears to have done here.

The patch snubbing of Lindsay Nelson and the patch brevity of Tommie Agee aside, ignoring Jerry Grote would still be a bad statement and bad precedent that is still within our power to overcome.

I'm blaming the sponsor patch. I'll bet that the deal with NY Presbyterian is that it has that sleeve exclusively all to itself. And there's no room on the other sleeve. As it is, the other sleeve looks ridiculous with the Harrelson patch sharing space with the logo patch. It's the logo patch that should have the exclusive on the sleeve. Looks like Steve Cohen needs more money.. I guess the Mets'd find space, though, if Mike Piazza or Dwight Gooden were to pass away this season.

And speaking of non player Mets HOFers, George Weiss and Johnny Murphy also never got a memorial patch or armband.

Would have been better than the uninspired KID 8 patch they wore for Carter

A made-up mind is not a fait accompli. A closed window of opportunity is.

I could make up my mind to do all sorts of things. Until it is done or the opportunity has expired, it's just a flight of fancy. To me, anyhow. Minds made up change all the time.

These stupid uniforms, for instance.

Good quote.

Here's the Mets sleeve with the Harrelson patch. Plenty of room.

Here, using my prototype above of a Grote patch with the same dimensions, is a possible sleeve with both patches. To keep them within the width of the Mets skyline logo, they overlap slightly, which adds a poignancy, as the two players were linked as longtime teammates, defense first players, and key cogs on the same pennant-winning and championship-winning squads.

If you are willing to go a little wider than the skyline logo, you could have the corners of the patches not overlap, but just barely kissing, allowing the sleeve to bend more on the seam between the two, and creating a nice tiling effect.

[FIMG=500]https://metsrostercentral.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/double-patch-2.png[/FIMG]

Or you can position the two patches opposite each other, as cubist satellites pulled in by the gravity of the skyline-logo sun.

Why no one on Roosevelt Ave has never called to ask us to

just run certain aspects of the franchise is and always will be

beyond my scope of comprehension.

Wow! There really isn't any more sleeve room thanks to the sponsor patch. To make room for the London Series patch, the Mets aren't wearing their skyline logo patch in the UK.

Buildsubmarines.com appears to have that same logo. Its a nice sleek patch compared to other non team patches.

I still can't tell from the website who exactly the website is run by - the navy? Private defense contractors? Or an advocacy group for building submarines?

From the Mets...

FLUSHING, N.Y., June 29, 2024 — The New York Mets today announced the club has added memorial uniform patches honoring the lives of Jerry Grote and Willie Mays. The patches will be debut prior to today's 4:10 p.m. game vs. Houston.

Grote's family will be on hand today at Citi Field to celebrate his career and available in the press conference room following Carlos Mendoza's availability at 1:30 p.m.

“It has been a tough year for our Mets family,” said Steve and Alex Cohen. “We've lost two Mets Hall of Famers in Buddy Harrelson and Jerry Grote and the great Willie Mays. Jerry was the best defensive catcher in the history of our organization and guided the incredible 1969 pitching staff. We were honored to fulfill Joan Payson's promise to retire Willie's number on Old Timers' Day a few years ago and make sure he has a permanent home in New York.”

Grote passed away at 81 earlier this year. Grote was inducted into the Mets Hall of Fame in 1992 after catching 12 years (1966–1977) for the team. He was a two-time All-Star and anchored the 1969 world champion pitching staff. Grote led NL catchers in fielding percentage in 1975 and caught more games (1,176) than anyone else in franchise history.

“It means so much to the Grote family that the Mets are remembering Jerry's legacy,” said his wife Cheryl and son Jeff. “Jerry still has so many fans in New York and it makes us proud that what he did for the organization will not be forgotten.”

Mays passed away at age 93 on June 18. The Mets retired Mays' #24 on August 27, 2022. Mays, who was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1979, spent the final two years of his illustrious career with the Mets (1972–1973). His final home run, the 660th of his career, came on August 17, 1973 vs. Cincinnati at Shea Stadium. He was 24-time All-Star, two-time MVP and earned 12 Gold Gloves.

“Putting the patch on the uniform is another clear indication by the Mets that they appreciated and valued the contributions my dad made to the organization and for that matter to New York City,” said Willie's son, Michael Mays. “For my father, coming back to the Mets was coming back to where it all started. He was coming home. I want to thank Alex and Steve Cohen for honoring the pledge that Joan Payson made to retire his number. That meant a great deal to him and our family. Let's Go Mets.”
