I guess I can see those two over Wagner. It's not particularly my position, but whatevs.

More in line with him, I might agree about "We stink" though I probably disagree about who "we" are and why those people stink.

I think we ought to have a more nuanced approach to defense than the binary "great" or not. Yeah, Andruw Jones won 10 Gold Gloves, but that was probably at least a few more than he should have, as we who might stink a little just accepted his "great"-ness as a constant state, when that's just not the way things work.

As for Chase Utley, the next Gold Glove he wins will be his first. The way I remember it — with scant examination of the record — was that he had a good prime with his glove, but was largely pedestrian the last nine or 10 years of his career. A strong prime, though.

Jimmy Rollins is tougher to get behind. He did have 470 steals, and that's not counting the MVP award he stole from David Wright.

Of course Heyman has a vote. He's been covering baseball for decades.

The Jeter comment was really just a throw-away line in order to get to his main point about how the voters are still dealing

with the aftermath of the steroid issue -- the non-vote for Jeter was bad, but this is worse -- and aren't dealing with it in

any kind of cohesive or logical way.

And now that I defended over the Jeter comment I'm going to take him to task on the Utley one: covering for a weakness in

a hitter's resume by touting his 'clutch' hitting ability makes for a very weak argument.

That's pretty much what I mean.

I don't know if this is an old statement or a new one; one that was part of an ongoing discussion or answer to a direct question.

Or is it simply Reggie spouting off in a way to make himself look better by suggesting that the exclusive club he belongs to really

should be even more exclusive by downgrading the accomplishments of five guys, four of whom can no longer respond to his

statements.

A little Google Fu suggests the quote in the tweet goes back

to 2012

Which is now even more of a head scratcher since Rice was inducted in 2009…and most likely it wasn't a conversation on Andre Dawson's merits as he got inducted the next year…

Oh, okay, just relaying some sort of interview piece Jackson did with Sports Illustrated around the time the linked article came out.

This reminds me of how long it's been since I was a "baseball fan" as opposed to a Mets fan. Players have come along and had potentially Hall-of-Fame worthy careers and have been retired for five or more years and I'm barely familiar with them. I think Mark Buehrle was a pitcher, but I couldn't say what team or teams he was on. And the name Victor Martinez doesn't ring a bell at all. I have no idea who he is. And James Shields is a mystery as well.

Sure, career American Leaguers are playing the game in a parallel shadow universe. That's always been kinda true for me.

James Shields' appearance on the ballot suggests a question, though: Who was the last active Devil Ray? Scott Kazmir? Is it possible that that the question has not been decided?

near as i can tell, yeah, scott kazmir was the last active devil ray.

and evan longoria is the last remaining active original ray. maybe david price too if he hasn't officially retired yet.

I was unaware, until just now, what a career Adrian Beltre had. 477 homers, 3,166 hits, .286/.339/.480. Hall of Fame similarity scores close to Dave Winfield, Eddie Murray, and Cal Ripken. (And Carlos Beltran is near that neighborhood as well.) I had been surprised that he was on all ballots we've seen so far, but I guess I shouldn't have been.

I thought he was going to be a moron or making some dumb point, but he is just a "small hall" guy and Beltre is on the wrong side of the line for him. Respectable, even if I disagree.

There, I save you all a read.

I don't know. That was some pretty terrible reading, from the thesis paragraph on.

That guy got paid to write that.
