I'm wondering now if they don't go looking for takers on Alonso and just go scorched earth on the rebuild.

They need an awful lot of talent, and an awful lot to go right, just to compete next year.

Their 'scorched earth' was the trade deadline deals last year. I don't think there's an appetite for more of that with a new PBO and manager. I think they'll add (they certainly have to do something about the rotation at least).

I don't care about the Yankees. Nor do I think the Mets "relied" on the Yankees in any meaningful way when they hired Buck Showalter, for instance.

More interesting to me is that he's the fifth managerial hire since Terry Collins retired at the end of 2017, four of which have been first-timers.

Mendoza will do what the numbers guys tell him to do

Has watched Boone do it daily and knows the drill

I saw something in Sports Illustrated speculating about Mets interest in 3B Matt Chapman

Writer didn't really have a source (his own mind I guess) but I can see where Baty and maybe to a lesser extent Vientos may not have much of a future here.

Time will tell

It's a factual question, and not particularly concerned with how much you care or don't care about it.

I find it very odd, damned peculiar in fact, that the Mets have hired so many former Yankees managers, coaches, players to manage their team over the decades, especially considering the animosity that has consistently existed between the teams' fans. It's almost an admission of the Mets' inferiority to the Yankees, a confession that they would, to paraphrase Willie Randolph, like to export the Yankees' winning ways to their sad losing franchise. Just as a matter of policy, I'd rather they had far fewer ex-Yankees managing the Mets rather than far more than you might expect.

Have the Yankees ever hired a former Mets' manager, coach, or player to manage their team? Probably once or twice, which would merely be what the odds would dictate, given the number of major league teams. I'd prefer a policy that promotes former Mets, and former ex-other MLB teams, before hiring so extensively managers with a Yankee pedigree. Maybe that's just me.

Joe Torre. Started his managerial career with the Mets, then lowered his standards.

No, the premise that the Mets "relied" on the Yankees is not a fact at all, but very much an opinion.

That wasn't the factual part of the question I was referring to, as you probably understand. The factual part is the number of former Yankee managers, coaches, and players whom the Mets have selected to be their managers. You could hardly get more factual than that simple task of counting Mets managers who have worn pinstripes. That's the part that is unconcerned with your caring or not-caring.

Whether you accept the characterization of the Mets "relying" on the Yankees for their managers, or would prefer to call it the Mets "drawing upon" or "hiring" or "extending managerial employment to" former Yankees, is a matter of personal style, but one thing I would balk at calling it is "a sheer coincidence." You, of course, may choose to characterize this factual phenomenon in any way that pleases you.

You didn't write that it was a question with a factual part. You wrote that it was a factual question. It isn't.

I don't know why you want to throw down over this.

Has a formal introduction been announced yet? Ya know, like with cameras,

mics and silly organizational yibber yabber?

Oh. Chris's Russo doesn't like the Carlos Mendoza hiring.

Well.

That settles it.

[bIGPURPLE]I love it![/bIGPURPLE]

I mean, if that blithering idiot is against him, how bad can he be?

Posted

Russo wouldn't know Mendoza if stuck on an elevator with him. He's just railing at analytics and the perception that, under Stearnes and just as Boone is under the current MFY regime, he'll be beholden to dictates from above rather than allowed to be a "real" manager like Bochy.

Anything official on this yet? I've seen SNY tweet a shot of Mendoza in a mockup Mets uniform, but nothing substantive from the team.

Have I missed somet'n'?

Wifey just suggested that maybe recent experience has led them to do more thorough vetting; and maybe, in that vetting, they've hit a snag.

"After having a leadership role in the most venerated of all sports

franchises in the history of all mankind, I know what greatness means.

I thank them for that. I thank them for allowing me to export some of

that greatness to a sister borough. I thank the Cohen's, Mr. Stoins and

the entire Mets organization for this honor and opportunity."

Will Sammon in the Athletic collects testimonials that indicate Carlos Mendoza (or “Mendy”) has surpassed sliced bread in the Best Thing category.

He'd often begin meetings with a small touch of humor. Then he'd dive into the details of scouting reports and game plans with thoroughness and a direct tone.

A portrait of an unfamiliar character is being painted in the above paragraph, but it leaves me wondering if most bench coaches scowl at first, then dispense information in a superficial manner while scrolling through their phone.

Anyway, he's great and the Mets couldn't have gotten a better manager, says everybody who's ever crossed paths with the guy.
