Took a few more years than it should have. Crazy to think he's spent part or all of SEVEN years with the team! But a guy with his batting ability should not be getting the playing time he does ... he ate up nearly 300 ABs last year.

Given the state of catching, I would not be surprised to see a trade or waiver claim. But if he makes it through and is willing to spend some time in Syracuse, it's not a bad option to have him there should the other two gets injured.

This would potentially leave Brandon Nimmo pretty unrivaled as senior Met. Nimmo is now the only remaining 2016 Mets and the only remaining 2017 Met.

I'll surprised if he doesn't get claimed. I mean he kinda sucks, but doesn't suck suck.

Didn't he win a low minor league batting title years ago?

Yeah, and not that low, either. He took the Florida State League batting crown with a .320 average. Such titles, of course, are frequently deceptive, as players who excel get promoted and don't get enough appearances at one level to qualify for the batting average title, so your title means "Best Among Guys Who Weren't Good Enough to Hit Their Way out of the League."

His career-long struggles are tragic. Like most such characters, he was able to show hitting ability for a week at a time here and there — especially notable in his terrific start in 2020 before injury wiped out his season — but never able to conspire with his batting coach to figure out a technique that worked consistently.

Maybe tackling the dry-eye syndrome was the key, and now he's gonna take off. I was in favor of demoting Vientos in order to protect him, but I certainly didn't expect it to break that way.

Somewhere for a bullpen arm

Nido is possibly the best backup catcher out there. There will be demand

He has been a good Met

I have a feeling he'll be an MFY. Have you noticed their current catchers?

He's GOT to be better, and younger, than Alex Trevino and Kyle Higashioka, no?

"JAWN, Tomas Nido is in the owner's box"

the Indians recently DFA'd Zach Plesac...

Plesac has been a disaster this season, but I wonder if the 2 could be DFA replacements to each other...

as bad as a hitter that Nido is, it's not like the Indians catchers are any better (32 y.o. Zunino is hitting .189 with a .613 OPS, which isn't far off from his career numbers...and their backups haven't been any better)...

and at 28, Plesac could at least be AAAA bullpen filler...

That Nido received as many ABs as he did over the years is as much a testament to the inability of the other backstops, the ones he was supposedly backing up, to hit a whole lot better than him (JMcC) and/or stay on the field (Td'A)

Things like great defense and driving up a starting pitcher's pitch count are good, but not if you're team's offense can't score runs

Still a Met.

Nido clears waivers and accepts Mets AAA assignment.

Excerpt:

Tomas Nido cleared waivers Friday, the team announced, and accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Syracuse. The catcher was designated for assignment Monday, when Omar Narvaez returned from the injured list.

Nido could have refused the outright to become a free agent, but that would have meant giving up the remainder of the two-year contract worth $3.7 million he received from the Mets last offseason. Nido didn't have minor league options remaining, but as a player with less than five years major league experience was eligible for outright and is off the 40-man roster.

He's the first one up if Alvarez or Narvaez has to miss time so I see where he'd keep his money and come up here to play ball this summer.
