Edgy MD Site Manager Posted April 20, 2023 Posted April 20, 2023 Not a whole lot of denial of the contentions in there.

He's appealing a decision to the same party that made the decision. It's not fair but Max was part of the MLBPA negotiating team and this could have been fixed in the latest agreement.
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted April 20, 2023 Posted April 20, 2023 If he was still with the Nationals we'd all be cheering him getting suspended and labelling him a cheater

ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2023 Posted April 21, 2023 I'd be ok with this suspension if Max had not totally sucked as a Met to date

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted April 21, 2023 Posted April 21, 2023 "I swear on my kids' lives, I'm not using anything else. This is sweat and rosin. Sweat and rosin."Well, that's a firmer denial.
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2023 Posted April 21, 2023 A denial of what though? it seems that by his own admission he used rosin other than the rosin bag behind the mound which i'm hearing is the only rosin they are allowed to use? is there stickier rosin? i'm not a rosin expert.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted April 21, 2023 Posted April 21, 2023 Well, that may be irrelevant to his protestations, or it may be wiggle room that allows him to sleep at night.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted April 24, 2023 Posted April 24, 2023 I'd be ok with this suspension if Max had not totally sucked as a Met to date11-5 in 2022 with a 2.29 ERA. That's not "totally sucking".By my math, he'll be eligible to return on April 30. Does that sound right?
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted April 24, 2023 Posted April 24, 2023 Ashie's on something of a roll.I reflect upon Scherzer's "sweat and rosin" quote above. What he isn't saying is whether he's using MLB's certified rosin.Or MLB's certified sweat, for that matter.
Bob Alpacadaca Old-Timey Member Posted April 24, 2023 Posted April 24, 2023 He seems to be one of those guys who is so competitive that he finds the loopholes and looks for any edge. I see the point that "excessive" is subjective, and that Phil Cuzzi's standard might be different than that of other umpires. I also get that if MLB is looking to make a statement, calling foul on someone of Max's stature has more impact than than bouncing a reliever on the AAA shuttle.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted April 24, 2023 Posted April 24, 2023 During the long conversation last night the ESPN booth had David Cone said a lot of things, one being that what better way for MLB to make a point than with someone like Max

I'm not sure how credible this was, but interesting.Later
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted April 24, 2023 Posted April 24, 2023 I've never been sure what it means to "swear on someone's life". Are they saying that if they're lying, their loved one will immediately be struck by lightning?
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted April 24, 2023 Posted April 24, 2023 More likely it means that you are willing to allow them killed if you are found to be lying. It's supposed to come across as a bold statement, but on reflection, it tends to come up short on it's intent for three reasons:The universe tends not to collect if you are found to be lying.Other humans also tend to spare your loved ones' lives. It's just not worth it. I'd rather Max Scherzer give me a cool thousand dollars if I can establish that he's lying. That's worth more to me than the right to murder his children. Why would that appeal to me?While our children's lives are precious to most anybody, they are far more precious to the children themselves. If you're going to put skin in the game, it's far more meaningful to me if put your own.But whatever.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted April 24, 2023 Posted April 24, 2023 I like local colloquial versions."I swear on my mother's eyes!""I swear on my left nut!""I swear on a stack o' Bibles!"
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted April 24, 2023 Posted April 24, 2023 It's a neat way to eliminate your enemies and rivals, if it works. Just tell somebody an awful, reprehensible but obvious lie and when they call you on the lie, swear on your enemies' lives that you were telling the truth.
kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted April 24, 2023 Posted April 24, 2023 Always found, "I swear on my mother's grave!" kinda amusing. Really going way out on a limb to a box of decaying worm-eatin' dead carcass there. "But that aside, let me say that I swear, on the souls of my grandchildren, that I will not be the one who will break the peace we have made here today."
