Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 22, 2023 Posted November 22, 2023 I'm curious who opposed him that day , score etc , I would love to have seen him pitchAccording to baseball reference, Marichal faced the Mets three times in 1967. A May 3 game at Shea, which was a night game, and the opener of a doubleheader in SF on June 3. Meaning this photo was most likely taken on July 4th.https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/NYN/NYN196707040.shtmlBox score here. This was a rare off day for Marichal, who gave up 14 hits and 8 runs (five earned) in an 8-7 Mets win. Runs for the good guys driven in by Tommy Davis, Ed Kranepool, Ron Swoboda, Ed Charles and Jerry Buchek. Jack Fisher got the win.Interestingly, 1967 was the only year between 1962 and 1970 that Marichal didn't win at least 20 games, going just 14-10 that year.
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted November 22, 2023 Posted November 22, 2023 That July 4, 1967 game was the first time the Mets ever beat Marichal. He was 19-0 vs. the Mets till then.

batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted November 22, 2023 Posted November 22, 2023 Best pitcher of his generation not to win a Cy Young award. Marichal's best seasons coincided with Koufax 's best seasons.Google up Marichal's Time mag and SI covers to get a good look at that famous leg kick.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2023 Author Posted December 2, 2023 Must bring back some memories?

Dontrelle Willis, when he came up with the Marlins, had the closest leg kick to that in recent years.

batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted January 2, 2024 Posted January 2, 2024 deGrom, at his peak, had better stuff than Gooden. Granted, deGrom was as delicate as a hothouse flower and broke down often, but on stuff alone, deGrom was the best. You could even make a reasonable argument that at his peak, deGrom had the best stuff in all of baseball history. Better than everyone else. Koufax, Walter Johnson, Pedro. Everybody.
whippoorwill Old-Timey Member Posted January 2, 2024 Posted January 2, 2024 Yes I think so tooI'm still hoping he gets it back. Even for someone else.
