From "Pitcher List" (fantasy):

95. José Quintana (FA) – His command was insanely good as he embraced the BSB and went four-seamers up with curveballs down. This isn't something that will stick around for another season though…right?

[bSB is the Blake Snell Blueprint which they define as throwing North-South in the strike zone]

If he doesn't ring a bell, it's because the Mets haven't faced him since June 22, 2019:

Capable pitcher, but sort of the archetype of the five-and-fly guy in this five-and-fly age. Not sure I can abide two years and $26 milllion for him, since I don't really see him finishing that contract.

In line to follow Dilson Herrera as the second Colombian Met.

If you type “Jose Quintana” on your phone, it will autocorrect to this emoji: 🫤

Edit: for the record, I was shooting for this dude :-/

165.2 innings in 2022, with a 2.93 ERA and 32 starts. He'll be 34 next month. Looks like he'll be a good guy to have around. (But I'm still hoping for Senga.)

Not only the second Colombian Met, but also the second Met to have a surname starting with the letter Q.

165.2 divided by 32 gives us 5.18 innings per start.

Looks like I owe José Quintana 0.18 apologies!

Seems like a bargain next to Walker's recently signed deal. I like it. Slots in currently as the #4 and I like him better yet as the #5 should they bring Senga in, or Bassitt comes back.

Good pickup!

When I went to the Pirates game on July 5 against the Yankees, I was resigned to seeing the Pirates destroyed. But, Quintana pitched a gem, with seven strikeouts in five innings and allowing one run, out-dueling new Cub Tallion, who gave up five -- including a blast to Vogie. Mr. $360 million ended the game by striking out with two men on base. It was a very good day.

he's fine I think? We can hope for average, last year was mostly a mirage I think, pitch changes and stuff.

4 starters at 34+ is ..a choice. You've got Megill and Peterson as depth I guess, but there seems to be some overall roster constructions issues to address here, particularly, some more good pitchers, probably some that you use as relievers. You'd like one really top-flight (or two, platoon wise) guys that you can throw at emerging messes as these starters hit the middle innings and wear down or exit early.

He had a solid stat line the third time through the lineup this season, as often as it happened (.226/.295/.333, as opposed to .246/.301/.343 overall). I bet he could handle a bigger workload if asked to. I like him more than Taijuan Walker or Taillon, who got four years. This is a good signing.

"Quantana spells reliability...as in 29 starts and 165 innings in most of his seasons"...

sounds like he gets the modern seal of Walt Terrell-ness

He was very good last year and can fill a back end slot

Contract wise? It ain't my money and Uncle Steve is likely comfortable with the 26 million

A Quotient of Quintana Quirkiness: José was Mets originally a Mets player, pitching for them in the Venezuela Summer League at the

in 2006, but only throwing 5 1/3 innings before being cut loose.

He re-entered professional ball two seasons later in the Yankees system, and has continued on to throw over 1700 innings of MLB ball.

Tony Bernazard is the gift that keeps giving!!

right, but Quintana himself is on the older side. I'd like to be shuffling those mediocre league average-ish innings bet to someone younger. As much as we can predict anything about player injuries, age has got to be one of the leading factors. I'm thinking like "Mike Pelfrey type". Quintana's a bit better than Pelfrey was, but there have to be like meh starters approaching large arb raises that some of the cheap teams wouldn't much rather shuffle off for some AA longshot prospect or something.

Germán Márquez is making $15m with the Rockies this year. He's got a team option for 2024 for $16. He had a down year last year, so they might be looking to move on anyway.

Lucas Giolito is due for a bump up to 10+ million this year, last year before free agency with the White Sox. Also had a down year last year.

Those guys cost prospects and I doubt the cost on either of them is a 'AA longshot' The Mets have decided they'll be filling holes with cash, not giving up the top of their farm system.

not those guys maybe. Those are solid pickups. trade a prospect for them. They're both likely better than Quintana and much younger. but hey, it's not clear the Mets prioritize finishing first anyway, given the last two years. Quintana is fine to coast to a wild card spot.
