No, you can go ahead and guess that one. Part of the planning in this was that the bonus questions would tip off some of the answers in the main sequence, and vice-versa. If I got too gabby in ruling on that response, that shame is on me.

It looks like I was unclear here. We're looking for the names of the next two players selected, not the next two teams to select. Please try again.

Shawon Dunston

I'm still not sure how you play this game. But was my Dunston guess ruled upon yet?

It will be, but you're sitting on a bonus question and a chance for big points!!

Steve Henderson. I think Mets brass billed him as a superstar, though that may have been just to keep away pitchfork-and-torch wielding Seaver fans.

I suspect the Mets didn't even have a hype machine before Doublepon came in! Even if they did, Steve Henderson came into the league as a Reds fifth-rounder, and no amount of hype was going to make the Seaver trade a popular one!

While it is, however, true that Jon Matlack graduate from Nevada's Henderson High School, that answer will still get you NO POINTS! It will, however COST YOU ONE!

is ron darling still on the board? is it cool if i snag him for my own points?

It's not only cool, it's GOOD FOR FIVE POINTS!! You can thank THE TEXAS RANGERS!

Something else that is cool is you CLIMBING INTO SEVENTH PLACE with one bonus question answer separating you from THIRD!

[th]Bonus Question for metsmarathon[/th]
What's the number one-iest season in Mets history? We're looking for the season in which the greatest number of first-round draft picks appeared for the Mets.

Shawon Dunston

Shawon Dunston is, of course, a Met who was a first-round draft pick, netting you three points! He's also a first-round draft pick from outside the organization, which nets you TWO EXTRA points! Finally, he's a #1 overall pick, which bumps up your score by THREE MORE POINTS!

Such an answer is the HIGHEST-SCORING answer you can get without a bonus question! That's pretty good for someone who claims not to know how the game is played! And you know what you get now?! A BONUS QUESTION!

[th]Bonus Question for centerfield[/th]
Which two 1986 Mets were never drafted at all?

man, i liked shawon dunston when he was here.

you know who did not leave as positive an impression? cameron maybin. i damn near forget he was even on the team this year. but damn, he's got the stink of a former first-rounder doesn't he?

I can't say with certitude that what you're smelling is Cameron Maybin's draft status, but his status is in fact that of a FIRST-ROUNDER! Cameron went in the first round to Detroit back in 2005 and he's earning you five points in 2021!

Know what makes foul smells go away? The sweet air of a tie for THIRD PLACE! And that air will smell all the sweeter if you can answer your BONUS QUESTION!!

1988

This is a solid guess, as the 1988 first round gave us the likes of Robin Ventura and Brian Jordan, along with the usual share of also-rans, averaging 8.86 bWAR per pick, but the first round we're looking for came in an earlier year than that.

metsmarathon was incorrect on 2019 being the number one-iest season in Mets history (too late) about one being the number 2008 Mets first round draft picks that never saw the show (too low), but BOTH WERE GREAT GUESSES!

OK, so I reread this whole thread to see if I missed any answers. I did this because I love you.

While I did not miss any, per se, I haven't yet gotten to nine, and intend to do that forthwith: Candelaria (Marshmallowmilkshake); Gooden (metsmarathon); Burnitz (Johnny Lunchbucket); Ankiel (Chad ochoseis); Bruce (metsmarathon); Lindor(Marshmallowmilkshake); Ventura (Chad ochoseis); Tyner (centerfield); stroman (metsmarathon)

More importantly, we have several high-value bonus questions still unanswered! Please don't leave money on the table!

Please answer those hanging questions, competitors! The home audience is itching to see those cards turned over!

Candy went to the Buccos in the second round back in 1972, out of Brooklyn's LaSalle Academy. We like your thinking, but we'll still dock you a point!

Port St. Lucie's own Rick Ankiel could pitch, he could hit, and he could play some outfield, but for some reason none of that was tantalizing enough in 1997 for any team to jump on his rights in the first round!

Juanito Cubo Del Almuerzo, you have some open bonus questions on the board, I believe.

regular guess: matt harvey, who seems like the kind of guy to turn down a first round invite that wasn't quite good enough.

I'm reasonably certain that i don't think i know who bill mazer is.

I'm also reasonably certain that bill mazer was in fact born three planets from the sun (sol), and within 100' of the solid parts of the surface of said planet. you can just give me my bonus points now. i'll wait.

The Amazing Bill Mazer was a legendary local New York sportscaster, as well renowned for his sports erudition as for his boring delivery.

You're zooming in quite well. Give me the nation on that solid surface in which Mazer was birthed and five points will be yours.

Also good reasoning with Harvey, who had been first taken in round three by the Angels before the Mets grabbed him in a later year. No bonus points for him, but he will be tallied as your regular guess. Ventura was only drafted once.
