Out of the basement!

Your bonus question: How many players drafted in the first round by the Mets retired without ever playing for them?

Making some assumptions here, I'm guessing you are saying guys who went to the minors but didn't get to the majors with the Mets, as opposed to guys like Kumar Rocker, who didn't play at all in the Mets system --which would be a trick question.

So, in 56 years, knowing most of these guys with the Mets don't make it, I'm guessing 30 of the 56.

How many siblings of 1986 Mets were drafted by an MLB team?

I'll go with five. The brothers of Keith, Ronnie, Mookie ... and probably two others I don't know about.

Which Mets first-round draft choice (not necessarily a Met) was the first such draftee to receive a bonus valued at over a million dollars ...?

So this is a guy who was drafted by the Mets but didn't necessarily play for them, as opposed to one who played for them but wasn't necessarily drafted by them?

... in 2021 dollars

Oh good, I get to incorporate the rate of inflation over multiple years, or maybe even multiple decades, into my answer!

Do I get time to get an Economics degree first or do you need the answer sooner?

Please don't sneeze at a 10-point opportunity.

Thanks for answering the 1986 question. There were, in fact, more than five brothers of 1986 Mets who were drafted and played pro ball.

Well, Kumar didn't retire, so we're really looking for first rounders who (a) failed to graduate from the minors, or (B) graduated from the minors only after moving on to another organization.

Guessing 30 is coming in high.

Nonetheless, keep in mind that the Mets have had more than 56 first-round draft picks, garnering multiple picks in some years.

1974.

Good guess, but the year we're looking for is later. The 1974 first round gave the world Dale Murphy.

I'm staying in the ballpark with 28. Darn you, Scott Kazmir and your ilk who played elsewhere!

Thank you for jumping in there and Gavining. The judges will have that scored just as soon as we catch up on these answers and folks lock in their bonus question responses!

Tijuan Walker

You left out the “a” in his first name, but are damned correct about his draft status! (If only just!) TW went to Seattle with the 43rd overall pick in the 2010 draft, but still, technically, in the first round! This wins you five points and pulls you into a tie for sixth place! Third place is within your reach if you can answer your bonus question!

We spin the wheel and assign you a bonus question: How many players who played for the Mets were #1 OVERALL picks?

I believe you've already had this one, so here's a real chance for you to break the bank!

Frayed Knot wrote:
Looper

Yes, once upon a time, Braden Loop-de-doop was a high-value draft pick, and he's still paying dividends today by winning you five points! This helps you leapfrog Ben Grimm into third place! It also earns you to chance to win big points by answering a bonus question — not that you will! But the chance is there!

Your unwanted bonus question is a repeater: Who was the first US first lady with a formal education?

Porcello

Think 1967 Red Sox. A bad Mets trade.

I'm still trying to figure out the meaning of your second paragraph, but … YES! Rick Porcello!

Evoking Rick's sweet name earns you five points and delivers you from the cellar!!

ashie's bonus question: How many children or stepchildren of 1986 Mets were drafted by an MLB team?

Joe Panik

Well-played! Joe Panik shared the distinction of going to the Giants in the first round along with Zack Wheeler. He went 29th overall in 2011, and you breathing his cognomen has enriched your score by five chips.

This pulls you into a tie for fourth place! And that is a tie you can rocket out of if you can answer a bonus question!

Lunchable bonus question: What city has the largest Francophone metropolitan area? THE RANDOMIZER KEEPS BRINGING US BACK TO THAT ONE!

Steve Henderson. I think Mets brass billed him as a superstar, though that may have been just to keep away pitchfork-and-torch wielding Seaver fans.

I missed this guess. Butch was a seventh-round pick in 1989 out of Eisenhower High in Lawton, OK. Minus one for you.

"Can't miss" indeed! Butch ROCKED! You know how many picks from that round out-performed Butch Huskey that year? ONE! (And that one was Russ Springer of the Yankees, so you know he took PEDs.)

Worry not! You are still firmly in second place!

The Honorable Bobby Valentine!

Bobby V. Is not only honorable, but RIGHT honorable, and he was honored with the Dodgers' first pick (fifth overall) in 1968.

That means five points for you! You have jumped from eighth to sixth! Less danger of relegation!

What might have been if Dr. Frank Jobe had thought about harvesting tendons a few years sooner than he did? We might be talking about GG surgery and not TJ surgery. Anyway, Gary's my guess as another first round pick.

Gary might have been a first-rounder under other circumstances or other conditions. He was selected in the 11th round by Houston initially in 1965. When he didn't sign, Baltimore selected him in the first round of the January 1966 secondary phase. The Mets ultimately signed him as a third round pick in the supplemental stage of the 1967 June draft, but ultimately, he doesn't fit our criteria.

A point lost, but nothing ventured, nothing gained!

Pat Tabler!

As unlikely as it is, you look for perennial star when you're picking in the first round. That's not what the Yankees got in Pat Tabler, who would never play for them, and who would make only one All-Star Team in his 12-year career.

But hey, if you can't get a perennial All-Star, grabbing a 12-year big-leaguer who puts up a .489 / .505 / .693 // 1.198 career mark with the bases loaded is pretty good too. And just typing his name gets you five points!

This pulls you within three points of the lead!

Roberto was all those things, but he was one thing additionally, and that thing is born in Puerto Rico, which, by the rules of the time, exempted him from the draft.

That's a point chopped off your score, plummeting you from third all the way down to third!

imma followup my syndergaard with a dickey. r.a. dickey.

Cy Young winner Red Ass Dickey was indeed the first round draft pick (#16 overall) for 1996 Texas Rangers. This fact nets you five lovely points! And vaults you out out of the cellar into ninth place!

This is a solid guess, as the 1988 first round gave us the likes of Robin Ventura and Brian Jordan, along with the usual share of also-rans, averaging 8.86 bWAR per pick, but the first round we're looking for came in an earlier year than that.

I am going to go with Mercury because it is closest to the sun, and the Mets will play there some day, which might cool it off for a little bit.

My next guess: Francisco Lindor!

A devious person would just guess the heretofore unguessed Robin Ventura as a Metly first rounder and grab an easy five points, but we're not that devious, right?

I propose that we remove Robin Ventura from the first round board.
