The consensus seems to be that the Mets need George Springer. Springer would be a great addition, but without a DH the Mets would have to bench a strong bat to get him in the lineup.

2018-2020 -

Alonso .252/.350/.559

Smith .278/.336/.527

Conforto .261/.365/.478

Nimmo .257/.397/.465

Springer .278/.363/.507

Maybe the Mets have a bigger need elsewhere? With Rosario/Gimenez both gone and Cano stupid, the infield depth could use work. In particular, JD Davis is considered one of the worst defenders in baseball at 3B (worse than Nimmo is in CF!) and his 2018-2020 numbers aren't that impressive (.272/.352/.445) for a defensive liability.

Maybe instead of Springer, the Mets should be looking at being re-united with a former Met who has hit .300/.387/.513 over the last 3 years? JUSTIN TURNER could come cheaper than Springer and actually be a better fit for this team!

I think I had been assuming that Nimmo would go to Cleveland in a Lindor deal, and that would leave us with an outfield of Conforto, Springer, and Smith if no DH.

There can be a four-man outfield of the above three and Nimmo, of course. Three of the four hit lefty, though. Maybe Nimmo gets traded for a right-handed outfielder?

Why are we trading Nimmo?? the guy has a friggin .400 OBP! I would trade Smith first and its not even particularly close in my mind.

Also, extend Conforto NOW!

there is more to being a baseball player than taking a lot of pitches...IMO, Nimmo is a good 4th guy in the OF, or a platoon guy...but not an every day corner OF in terms of hitting; and not good enough defensively to be a starting center fielder...at least not on a team with World Series aspirations...is he a better overall OFer than Doug Flynn was an overall shortstop for the Mets? yes...but we didn't exactly win a World Series with Flynn as a shortstop (sorry about the random Doug Flynn comparison but I got Tom Seaver, a Terrific Life for Christmas...and just reached the part of the book where Seaver was traded to the Reds)

Sign Springer for LF...and make a trade with the Rays that nets Kevin Kiermaier for Center Field

"Taking a lot of pitches" is hardly the sum of Nimmo's game. His OBP is a terrific asset, and not his only one.

I do think we need a 3B, but Turner is asking for 4 years and I'd be afraid to give him 2. Tormund is already 36.

I think yesterday's trade dampened the chance of Springer landing. I don't know who is a competent righty CF out there, but I'd be trying to find one of those, a lefty reliever (Brad's Left Hand will do), and maybe another SP.

Plus he's America's second-most-famous superspreader.

and eventhough we have changed owners, he sounded a little bitter towards the Mets for non-tendering him a few years back

Doug Flynn was beyond awful. He might be the worst hitting everyday player in Mets history, worse even than Ordonez. In today's world of baseball, Doug Flynn wouldn't get more than one full season of plate appearances, if even that much, even if he played for the dumbest team in baseball.

My crazy ass, no-Springer deal gets Kris Bryant (and a OK prospect) from the Cubs for, um, JD Davis (and a shit prospect).

Save the $$ or not, Cubs. And we want that OK prospect

I go for that. And it would leave some bucks behind to fill out the rest of the roster.

FWIW - I fully understand the Mets saying they won't go over the CBT threshold. Why would they announce to the world if they were fine with going over? If it comes down to getting the dude or dudes they want and it takes exceeding the CBT to do it, I fully expect them to.

Exactly. Cohen's not about to telegraph to the world that he'll pay more than top dollar for everyone he wants. Even if he's willing and able. Also, the baseball luxury tax isn't much of a deterrent to spending and to someone like Cohen, it's like pizza-pie money to me and you.

Enough already with the woe is me about how much Cohen can spend. There's never been a baseball owner as rich as Cohen, not even close. Probably in all of American team sports. Maybe the Microsoft guy that owns the Supersonics. But the NBA has somewhat of a hard salary cap while baseball has no cap at all. An MLB owner can spend as much as he's willing and able to spend. There's just a tax/penalty for spending at a certain level.

It's a very distant second
