The 1967 Mets -- every single one of them -- Sgt. Pepper style. A tremendous piece of work. And the white toothpasty colored, early '67 outfield walls of Shea Stadium, which totally fascinated Zvon. This one took an enormous amount of time. He had asked me for suggestions for this project, which I was glad to give him. But the suggestion I remember the most is the one he didn't go for. I suggested a felt pennant, like the ones typically available at stadiums as souvenirs -- but of the 1966 World Champion Orioles, baseball's reigning champs as the 1967 season opened. I suggested that the Oriole pennant should be lying at the feet of the military-dressed Peppery Mets or in the foreground of the whole assembly. I thought the pennant would represent a humorous irony in that this ragtag group of Mets assembled for the Beatlesque cover would, two years later, make baseball history in so many different way by defeating those same Orioles in the World Series. But Zvon just wouldn't go for it. He wanted the Pepper cover to be as pure Mets as possible. I tried convincing him for a few days but after a while, I could sense he felt strongly about not including that pennant. This is a great piece, I think.

I like that Zvon saw it as his obligation to mark the moments that deserved cards, such as the announcement of a new Mets HOF class. His commitment was every bit as impressive as his creativity.
