Ever notice the guy in charge of the pitchers is the pitching coach,

but the guy in charge of the hitters can have any one of a number

of titles. The teams seem real intentional about which title they choose,

too. But if, say, Larry Rothschild was all, "Excuse me, I'm not the

pitching coach, I'm the throwing instructor," he'd be laughed out

of the game. Similarly, you're not going to hear Ray Searage come at

you with "I'm the hurling pedagogue, bitch."



But if Kevin Long or Rudy Jamarillo are all, "Fuck you, I'm the hitting

instructor," people think "God damn, that's one scientific badass of a

professional who takes his business seriously!"



And we're supposed think that the distinction between hitting instructor

and batting coach somehow matters.



It doesn't, right?

I can remember Bill Robinson back in the 80s emphasizing he was a "hitting coach" and not a "batting coach" and at the time it being something of a novel distinction.

"Hitting instructor" is someone who shows your game aunt or drunk uncle how not to hurt herself/himself in the sports complex's batting cage.
