Vic Sage Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2020 Author Posted January 16, 2020 yes. there is an excellent youtube video from my guys at Fandom Entertainment/SJU about the release patterns of oscar nominees over the years, and it shows that, with the increased volume of films now eligible because of the streaming companies and the perception that a late release is for "prestige" pictures, that 75% of nominees now come from the last 1/4 of the year.charting with Dan:

LWFS Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 WHEN THEY SEE US was faaaaaantastic, and should be watched by more people than it will be; I think it's considered more of a miniseries than a movie. (Though the lines do keep blurring for streaming fare.)RE: stuff I've seen in the last week. I was surprised by how little I liked THE IRISHMAN-- although I get what he was going for, it wasn't necessarily an improvement over earlier considerations of the same thematic/plot ground-- and by how much I liked ROCKETMAN-- weird and wooly and entertaining-- and THE TWO POPES (though it got a little Odd-Couple-y in spots).
cal sharpie Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 Agree on WHEN THEY SEE US. I also liked THE TWO POPES - much funnier than I thought it would be.
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 I think of When They See Us as four different movies in a series. Because each part is a different style of film-making
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2020 Posted January 30, 2020 1917 was brilliantly directed and photographed.If the cinematographer doesn't win the Oscar, they shouldn't award one.Later
cal sharpie Old-Timey Member Posted January 31, 2020 Posted January 31, 2020 1917 was brilliantly photographed and the cinematographer does deserve an Oscar. The one-shot trick has been done before in Hitchcock's Rope although 1917 is a better film, at least the one-shot gimmick was much better handled. But ultimately the "this happened and then this happened and then this happened" aspect wore on me as I didn't much care about the main character. I hadn't seen it when I made my list but I would rank it about the 8th best movie of 2019.

COLD PURSUIT, which I watched last week on a whim on a night when I really, really felt like doing nothing at all, is a really, really bad movie.Has Liam Neeson made a non-revenge flick in, like, the last ten years?

LWFS Old-Timey Member Posted February 6, 2020 Posted February 6, 2020 Finally saw JOKER. In terms of carrying the weight, Phoenix was like LeBron on the Cavaliers team that forced him to initially leave the Cavaliers. In terms of everything else... well, the production design was really good, for aping Martin Scorcese slavishly, and... well. It ain't my favorite.
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2020 Posted February 10, 2020 So I've been scouring the internet for an answer and coming up empty. How does Parasite win the Oscar for best movie? Isn't it a foreign movie? Why wasnt it placed in the foreign movie category?
LWFS Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2020 Posted February 10, 2020 It was. It won there as well.I've never been under the impression that the two categories were mutually exclusive, at least not by letter-of-law. They do seem to have been previously regarded as such by the voting body.
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2020 Posted February 10, 2020 So then why haven't past foreign movies competed in the main best movie category, for the most part?New trend?
LWFS Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2020 Posted February 10, 2020 I'd say it's artistic-cum-commercial protectionism, only the Academy has always been pretty cool with BRITISH (and other English-speaking) foreigners grabbing some of that shine.Xenophobia is closer to the thing, probs, with a healthy dash of favoritism. That may seem unduly harsh, unless you've ever seen some of the Hollywood Reporter's https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/lists/brutally-honest-oscar-ballot-irishman-was-boring-tarantino-amazing-1275576Brutally Honest Oscar ballots:Parasite is beautifully done, but it didn't hold up the second time, and I don't think foreign films should be nominated with the regular films...I liked 1917 and Sam Mendes' direction, but I thought Quentin did a great job, and I want an American director to win. The Oscars is an American thing; English things win BAFTAs and the French vote for the French, and Quentin Tarantino should be honored for a great American movie...I didn't like American Factory — when the Chinese boss says "We're better than them" and they show the American workers as big fat slobs, I thought to myself, "Why is Obama attaching himself to this?" [Higher Ground, the production company run by Barack and Michelle Obama, is behind the film.] The Cave and For Sama were basically the same movie with different characters.

Vic Sage Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2020 Author Posted February 10, 2020 Before this year, there were 11 foreign language films nominated for best picture, with 6 of them also nominated for best foreign-language film (and 5 of those winning in the best foreign film category, which began in 1956).Best picture nominees:1932 - Grand Illlusion1969 - Z*1972- The Emigrants+1973 - Cries & Whispers1987 - The Last Emperor1995 - Il Postino1998 - Life is Beautiful*2000 - Crouching Tiger*2006 - Letters from Iwo Jima2012 - Amour*2018 - Roma*+nominated in Foreign language film category*won in foreign language film category
Vic Sage Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2020 Author Posted February 10, 2020 I think my predictions were pretty good, overall. I went 17/24, with all "locks" coming through. Of the 7 I missed, all were designated as possibles, with "closing", "dark horse", or "even money". No long shots came in.
LWFS Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2020 Posted February 10, 2020 More data points-- by Tweet or by "brutally honest" ballot or by numeracy of award show results-- SHOULD lead to better guesses/fewer real surprises, right?
