Baseball cards: Best Topps design by decade

Here's something fun for a Friday. Topps has a poll asking you to pick your favorite design by the decade.

I went with 1956, 1962, 1972, 1987, 1992, 2014 and 2010.



All subjectivity and nostalgia to be sure.

I voted for 1956, 1963, 1971, 1982, 1993, 2009, and 2013. The cards from the around 1990 and later were totally unfamiliar to me. I didn't submit my vote because they insisted on getting information from me and I didn't want to bother.

Maybe, at some point, we can each nominate our five or so favorite Mets cards, create brackets and have a new competition so Maja has some additional artwork for the lobby!

That's really cool. It really spells out the years I was interested in baseball cards. I think I got a few packs in 83, a few packs in '91. But 84-90, I was really into it. 1984 Topps is what baseball cards look like when I think of them.

I'd work my ass off on a project. I'd present it to them, and they'd remind me that the real goal was e-mail captures.

The correct answers, of course, are 1952, 1965, 1976, 1983, 1991, 2009, and 2016. And Topps already has my info several times over, so I submitted.



The 1983-85 stretch is unquestionably the pinnacle of Topps designs.

Okay, if we do this, a Mets Baseball Card Derby, it will be after this winter's Tabloid Cover Derby, and it will be comprehensive. So we might as well start gathering the images now. Someone else will have to take the lead on that part, but if that gets done, I'd be glad to coordinate the voting and the polls next February or March.



All the images would have to be at a standard size. Let's say 400 pixels high. That's what I use for the tabloid covers and the magazine covers. (For the yearbook covers I used 500 pixels.)

Oh, I like this idea. Gather X-number of nominations from participating voters and set up a field of 128 or something.

I'm happy to be the compiler. I can scan cards from my collection so we don't have watermarks and such. I might need some assistance with sizing.

I have every Mets card from 1962 on*.



*Every base card produced by a card company. I long ago gave up chasing inserts, modern short-prints, parallel versions and such. And there are many oddball cards out there from Twinkee boxes and such that I snag when I can, but are considered pleasant additions as opposed to essential parts of the collection.

I forgot about horizontal (or landscape) cards. Those should have a width of 400 pixels.

I agree on the horizontals. On the 74 set (see Matlack above) they were so much more dramatic, not just because of the action picture but because it altered the broken up banner team reveal into a single sentence: NEW YORK METS.

That shot of Gooden rounding third is great. So much information is suggested to imply a bulletproof invincibility of the Mets. You're losing 7-3 in the third with the best pitcher on the planet facing off against you. And even thougt he's already spotted you three runs as a present, they're piling up runs against you early, and even Gooden himself is coming around to score, which should surprise nobody as the batter is hitting .342.



And fuck the concourse. Every seat has an ass in it.

I dunno, Edge. That's a 1992 card. That's light years away in baseball years from Dwight Gooden being the best pitcher on the planet. Also, Davey Johnson was gone. And the Mets dynasty was over. Plus, or minus, really, Fred Wilpon was running things.
