He has speed. I don't think that's enough either, but McNeil and Nimmo aren't here right now and the options are very limited. To be honest, with his defense at -13 runs saved at the beginning of June and Hechavarria at least giving us some pop, I think a trip to Syracuse would do him and the Mets some good once either Cano or McNeil comes back.

Is this a managerial question? If so, who would you pick to lead off instead?

Or is this a GM question (“we should have better options”)?

I dunno. I never thought of it that way.. Does it even matter? And if it's a GM question, that wouldn't necessarily make it an "options" question. Plus, with this Keystone Cops operation, don't rule out Jeff Wilpon demanding that there be, above all else, a fast guy at the top of the lineup.

McNeil and Nimmo are hurt.

And Mickey Callaway too easily slides into Development Mode and/or Protection Mode, rather than Hey-Let's-Win Mode.

So what? Rosario is probably tha worst hitter in the lineup. A guy that should be batting eighth shouldn't ever bat first.

Rosey's still figuring it out. I think he can be and perhaps oughta be better than he's been so far, especially with the glove, but shirley he's shown stretches of enough production to conclude he may one day be a contributor and oftentimes till then you gotta live with the learning curve.

I'm all for hitting him 7th or 8th but who's your leadoff man today? Hechavarria? Davis? They come with limitations too. Conforto might be a terrifying leadoff man but he's also your best 3rd and 4th hitter.

As to why he's batting 1st it's obvious that our options are limited to the 8 hitters we put on the field on any given day. Of those 8 he prolly has the best speed and so is most likely to score a run I guess.

I don't know if it means anything, Michael Confoto led off the first third of the season last year, and hit pretty poorly from that position. His season didn't really recover until the second half.

It's a tough call. When the Mets are at full strength, such as it is, Rosario's probably the worst hitter in the lineup. Today, the Mets started two players, Davis and Altherr, who might be worse than Rosario. And by might, I mean probably.

And I don't agree that Rosario should be batting lead off because of his potential and all that learning curve jazz. Not with his batting line. He could learn just the same batting sixth or seventh. The pitches come in just as fast and with the same spin whether he's batting 1st or 7th. He can move up when he actually realizes some of that potential.

Those were also his first at bats coming off a scary injury.

Like I wrote, I don't know if it means anything.

Personally, I didn't like using him in that spot, but that was also when they had Nimmo as a glaringly obvious alternative.

D.Smith has the best stats to bat leadoff right now, and Cano is coming back tomorrow.

also, speed is a lot less important than just being on base when hitting in front of Alonzo and Conforto.

D.Smith/Lf*

Cano/2b*

Alonzo/1b

Conforto/Rf*

Frazier/3b

Ramos/C

Gomez/Cf

Rosario/Ss

who has to declare their lineup first? if i was the opposing manager and saw that i'd throw my lefty specialist out in the first inning with instructions to pitch around Alonso. "starting pitcher" to start the second.

I like this. Says something about how poor Lagares has been that Gomez has basically taken his spot. Nimmo hurt, Broxton DFA'd, this should have been the time for him to step up.

I wonder if Lagares isn't the guy to go when they make whatever changes they need to get Cano/McNeil/Zimmo back. Last months of a contract he never really lived up to despite the value of his glove.
