You may not have gotten a New York Mets game yesterday, but if you tuned in to the Syracuse Mets battling the Columbus Clippers, you were in for a treat, as Corey Oswalt threw six one-hit innings before turning the game over to Tim Peterson for two innings and Arquimedes Caminero for the final frame. Together, those two bullpenners threw hitless ball, treating Columbus mothers to a two-hour, 12-minute one-hitter. Dilson Herrera homered and Tim Tebow got picked off, and all-in-all, it was what God made Mother's Day for.



The win helped the Mets hold off the hard-charging Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders and maintain Syracuse's hold on first place in the International League North Division. Beating the Clippers, who had been a Yankees affiliate for 26 seasons up to 2006, and holding off the RailRiders, the Bombers current AAA team, it felt like beating the Yankees twice.



Of 37 guys who've appeared in a game for the Syracuse squad this year, 30 have MLB experience. This is the veteran club of veteran clubs. But few have the sort of stellar career as two-time MLB All-Star Carlos Gómez. CarGo Shorts got off to a slow start with Syracuse this season, but has really turned it on in recent weeks, has been hitting third in Tony DeFrancesco's lineup, and is not such a bad bet to be joining the Flushing Mets soon, if they can figure out first how to fit Jed Lowrie onto the roster. Gómez hasn't really been a star since 2014, but in the last 10 games, the former Met has hit .395 / .460 / .767 // 1.227 over his last 11 games, and that's the sort of trend that gets management's notice.



Apart from the regular good news about Oswalt and Drew Gagnon, Zack Lee has been stepping it up of late. Lee Jeans has allowed three runs in 13 innings his last two starts, striking out 12 while walking three. He remains undefeated at 2-0.



The real emerging story in the pitching staff may be Stephen Villines, recently promoted from Binghamton. The sidearmer, who you may have seen in Spring Training, has been The Man Without an ERA this season, following his 12 2/3 worth of scoreless innings with Binghamton with another four innings (so far) with the ‘Cuse. In 110 2/3 career innings, White Villines has struck out 155, walked only 20, and allowed all of four home runs. That's a guy you want to make room for. (Though I see red flag when I see him retweeting content from Barstool Sports. C'mon!)



And make room on your calendars for the SyraKoos team's next matchup, hosting the Louisville Bats Tuesday night with the always-intimidating TBD on the hill. Don't eat before the game. Remember, it's Taco Tuesday.

Syracuse was the only Mets affiliate to lose this afternoon (besides the Mets, of course), but the big fella finally got his first AAA homer this afternoon, victimizing former MLBer Asher Wojciechowski. Pulled to right.

The first AAA homer for celebrity outfielder Tim Tebow earned him the initial silent treatment in the dougout, but even after his teammates broke character and mobbed him, it was hardly enough to stand in the way of an 8-2 thrashing at the hands of The Columbus Clippers. The score was somewhat fitting though, perhaps as payback in kind for The Syracuse Mets buzzsawing of their rivals the day before. The split put the Mets at 6-4 over their last 10 games, and while that may not float your zeppelin, it was the only winning record over that time in The International League North Division, and it leaves the AAA Mets currently 1.5 games in first place. HUZZAH!



Hey, do you like when your second baseman isn't hustling? No, you probably don't. It probably burns you a little to see him wave good-bye at a grounder through the hole, rather than extend himself. Or you might be aggrieved to see him barely motivated to run the baselines as he hits into potential double plays against the last-place Miami Marlins. And then those potential double plays are easily convertible into double-plays? Yeah, I hate that.



Well, there's a hustling second baseman playing for the Upstate Mets, and his name is Dilson. Dilson Herrera. The prodigal son returned, Dilli Vanilli is stilli only 25. A career could still happen. And currently that potential career looks that much more possible as he has ripped to the tune of .333 / .371 / .788 // 1.159 over his last 10 games, hitting four homers in that span, despite his undersized frame. Killer Diller's listed at 5'10” an 210, but I have my doubts.



Hechor Santiago. There's a new New York Met. How'd he get there? By spanking International League hitters like a runaway dominatrix, that's how. A nice little string of one- and two-run starts has lowered his ERA to 3.35. Opposing hitters are hitting .204 against him, and despite being a portsider, he's been more effective against righties. If you remember him from Spring Training, you may remember a lot of walks. Yeah, that's still happening, so you may get results, but you may want to keep him on a short leash too.



Fun fact: Hector is yet another cross-dominant pitcher, making for five on the Mets pitching staff. In fact, as a lefty-thrower, righty-hitter, he's the rarest of birds. If you count the number of big league hitters who've succeeded with that profile, you may not have to pull your second hand out of your pocket (Rickey Henderson, Cleon Jones, um, er), but now we've got two on the Mets' pitching staff.



Emerging as the ace of the bullpen has been sometimes-New York Met Tim Peterson. Timoteo has been doing it with control, striking out 16 in his 17 2/3 innings, but walking only two. In fact, he has yielded more homers (3) than walks. Peterbilt is currently on a sweet little string of nine consecutive innings, covering 5+ outings, without allowing an opposition runner to cross the plate. That's gitten' it done.

Fboy was there this past Saturday with my mother in law and his cousins as I was in Cleveland running 26.2 miles and Fwife/Fgirl were camping with the Girl Scouts. He got to sing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" on top of the dugout with his 3 year old cousin and 80's legend Sgt. Slaughter. They then stayed for autographs and the chance to be put into a Cobra Clutch.

Having said that, I got my first two Syracuse Mets games in this past weekend, Friday night with Fboy, and then Sunday night with my mother in law, wife and kids. They lost both games (6-4 Friday, 11-6 Sunday), and in both games they were either winning or tied as late as the 6th inning only to have the bullpen cough it all up.



As for the changes from it being a Syracuse Chiefs game to a Syracuse Mets game, well, I appreciated it. They updated the park with lots of Mets and orange/blue color changes. They have tons of NY and SYR Mets gear in the gift shop and there were TONS of Mets fans in attendance. Maybe some are recent converts, or more of them came out of the woodwork, but I saw just as much people wearing NY Mets gear as I did Syracuse Mets gear.



My biggest complaint (aside from the bullpen) was their inability to correctly deploy any kind of "Let's Go Mets" chant. They put it up there in between innings? What's the point of that? I know the GM, I'm going to send him a note this week.

When a parent club has the injuries and instability in the roster the way the Mets have had the last few weeks, it echoes, and usually amplifies down through the system. The best players are called up on a moments notice. Other guys have to sit out for several days because they are DFA'd. infielders are asked to play the outfield for a few days, and relievers make emergency starts. Even guys that the organization has brought in may not be able to play until they've worked out for a few days. And even then the rust might still not be off.



That was going to be my lede no matter how the Syracusans had fared of late. And they've fared poorly, winning only two of their last 10 games, and dropping from 2 1/2 games up in first place to 2 1/2 games behind. First place! Fumbled away!



But hey! That includes yesterday's Memorial Day 9-5 hammering of the Yankee-affiliated Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. Even when you go 2-8, somebody's usually flying the flag with some pride, if only somebody.



Well, yeah, that somebody is named Chris Flexen. While the world was falling apart around him, the newly buffed out Flexie has stood strong. With a 5.25 ERA on April 15, The FlexMaster has been burning his jets for a month and a half. With a 3.04 ERA in 23 2/3 innings in that time, BoFlex has amassed (count 'em) 35 strikeouts and only nine walks in that period. I've been clamorin' and hammerin' for Drew Gagnon to get a start the next time one opens up in the big leagues, but Captain Flexible surely has pitched himself into the picture.



in the big relief pitcher shuffle, none other than Stephen Nogosek has gotten his first trip to Syracuse. Following a blink-and-you'll-miss-it ERA of 0.95 in his first 19 innings for Binghamton, Nogo has headed on up the highway and just right-on continued that show in Syracuse, giving up no runs in his first four innings, and only allowing one hit. The last remaining piece of the Addison Reed deal, he has a good chance to pitching in New York by the end of the summer. He went to Oregon and Michael Conforto to Oregon State, so hopefully Scooter isn't keeping him down.



One person who can't be kept down is René Rivera. The veteran former-big league backstop, who might not even have a job if not for the principles of Devin Mesoraco, has been a forest fire of productivity his last 10 appearances, going .389 / .452 / .667 // 1.119 over that period. That span includes a 4-4 game with two homers. Most likely the team's first catcher up in an emergency, the once-and-future Met has caught 14 of 24 would-be basestealers. That's a meal with awesome sauce.



But even a layer of awesome sauce doesn't make a shit sandwich go down all that well. So the Mets try to cook up something a little more savory tonight in Buffalo. The starter is listed as TBD, but look for Flexie back on the mound and not backing down.

Here Arquimedes Caminero gets tossed for drilling Breyvic Valera, apparently in response to the previous batter Mike Ford seemingly taunting one or two of the infielders on his way around the bases following his homerun. Things get a little hairy there after a while. Looks like Danny Espinosa led the charge. Tim Tebow apparently tried to play peacemaker, but as you can tell from the activity in the scrum, he was kind of batting .156 in that endeavor also. Please forgive the minor league camerawork.

Good article in The Athletic (sub. required) by the Nationals' beat writer about why they have a AAA team in Fresno. Basically, the Mets bought Syracuse to leave Las Vegas and the Nationals failed to cultivate any relationships with the minor league owners so they got the worst possible location for an east coast team in Fresno. It's worse than Vegas because there are fewer flights out of there. The author says that major league teams have to be nice to minor league franchise owners (either you're nice to them or you own your own) and the Lerners were not (much like Jeffy was alleged to have been rude to the Norfolk owner). This has forced WSH to stash players in AA Harrisburg for easier access to DC (that's a good idea--I don't remember the Mets doing this with Binghamton).

My take: HA, HA, LOSERS! How dumb do you have to be to get outsmarted by the Wilpons? I wonder if they are planning something with Richmond which used to be a AAA Braves team and is now a AA Giants team.

For years that was the Mets who wound up dancing first with New Orleans and later with Vegas after Tidewater/Norfolk opted to cast their lot with the Orioles.

Well, not really.

They can't just dictate that some existing team move itself to Montreal, and the PCL certainly wouldn't sanction one of their teams so far from the others.

They, like the Mets, could buy into an existing AAA outfit and apply to move it to Montreal (after securing a stadium, etc.), but it would have to be an IL team

for regional reasons and if they were already linked to an IL team it probably wouldn't be worth their trouble to contemplate moving to Quebec.

I'm sure they'd love to snag Norfolk or one of the squads from one of the Pennsylvania cities. But they'd have to convince the owners of those teams to break up

with their current boyfriends first. Maybe spreading some nasty rumors during math class would get things started.

Walkoff fever gripped the sons and daughters of Syracuse last night, as a 10th-inning triple by Travis Taijeron plated the tying run. After two one-out intentional walks, Luis Guillorme came on to pinch-hit for Tim Tebow — manager Tony DeFrancesco apparently looking to substitute contact for ... lack of contact. Whatever the specifics of his strategy, the skipper looked like a genius as LuGu singled to plate the game-winner. PANDEMONIUM!



The Syracuse Mets will take any pandemonium they can get, having gone 5-5 over the last ten, settling into a tie for second place, 3 1/2 games behind the streaking, Yankee-affiliated Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders in The International League North Division.



But 5-5 means there are as many good times as bad. And Chris Mazza hopes to bring a lotsa good times to Syracuse. He's started two games since his callup, against two contenders, and allowed but one run against each, totally 13 innings. Combined with two AAA starts earlier in the year, Mazza Ball has struck out 17 and walke only four in 24 innings. And that's getting it done, son.



Speaking of getting it done, Tim Peterson has been an unrelenting thorn in the side of International League hitters. Providing scoreless work in seven of his last eight appearances, TP has been on a roll, putting up a 1.86 ERA over that period. A 9-1 strikeout-walk ratio and a .134 batting average against says that the Son of Peter is going to be back at CitiField pretty soon, kissing the girls and making 'em cry.



But somebody has to hit, and since his callup, infielder/outfielder Arismendy Alcantara, has brought the https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQvWCeiXSHo?autoplay=1rock 'n' roll like nobody's business. Since his callup from Binghamton, the Santo Domingo native has been vicious and violent, already logging three homers in his first 13 games, putting some spice on a sexually thrilling .343 / .489 / .629 // 1.117 line. The name kind of evokes Moorish Spain, but I looked up the name Alcantara, and one site offers the definition of "dweller near a bridge under which ran muddy water."



That sounds kind of bullshitty, but I do know that Qantara means "bridge" in Arabic, and so the bridge he dwells near may soon be the Whitestone, if he keeps it up.



The fireworks continue tonight as the Mets host Rochester and starting pitcher Chase de Jong, a guy who has been lit up like dry newspaper all season long. And remember, it's Taco Tuesday!!

The Syracuse Mets will tumble 4 ya. In the last few weeks, they've tumbled from first place, tumbled behind the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, and tumbled behind the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. Suddenly, they've tumbled all the way to seven games back, losing four games from the pace in the last 10 contests alone, as they've gone 3-7 while the RailRiders have gone the opposite.



But it's not all about the tumbling, and it's a full-season schedule, so there's time to make those games up. Last night, for instance, the team opened with a five-run first, and a late run in the eighth provided the difference in a 6-5 win over the Charlotte Knights.



Anchoring the rotation in recent weeks has been late-arriver Walker Lockett. Texas Ranger started the season injured and then spent some rehab time with St. Lucie, but has been in consistent mid-season form since arriving in Syracuse, pitching 24 2/3 innings to the tune of a 3.28 ERA. That's all nice and spicy until you see that he has only nine strikeouts in that time. It's a small sample, sure, but it's not like his career numbers are that much better. I don't know if that'll fly in 2019, but the upside of pitching to contact is that it allows you to go deep into games, if you are effective.



You get more strikeouts from your bullpen, anyhow, and one bullpenner who has been a spicy jar of salsa has been Ryan O'Rourke. Until he coughed up two runs in yesterday's win, he had been unscored upon in five straight appearances. He's got solid numbers against lefties and has been getting better as the season has progress.



But it's the stats with the bats that impress all the cats. And one cool cat that has been a solid all-round offensive competitor has been Rubén Tejada, slashing a .343 / .434 / .500 // .934. Ruben was always a work in progress and though progress was slow and often stalled, it's worth remembering that he had a .360 OBP at just 21. It's also worth remembering that he might've helped one way or another in the 2015 World Series if he hadn't been assaulted by Chase Utley.
