I'm not Robinson Canó and I'm not Jed Lowrie. I'm not Wilson Ramos and I'm not Edwin Diaz. I'm certainly not Walker Lockett or Kyle Dowdy or even Keon Broxton. But I'm a newcomer to the Mets. And I'm not no minor league free agent signed on a whim and charitably invited to camp, neither.



Oh, no, the Mets pursued me with intent. They fucking gave up three guys for me. Well, they gave up three guys for me and minor league shortstop Cody Bohanek, but I think that was mostly me.



And why not?! My powa is LEGIT, yo! I've clubbed 105 homers in only 507 minor league games — an average of one every 18.86 at-bats. And that's not all in the PCL, my friends. I mean, SOME was in the PCL, but quite a bit WAS NOT!



You've met me before. I'm the guy who plays all four corner spots, infield and outfield, but lives and dies by the stick and whatever power it generates. For a time, my name was Butch Huskey. I've also been known as Bobby Bonilla or Scott Hairston. I think my original name was Frank Thomas, but I'm not sure. The ol' power-hittin', utility cornerguy. The PHUC.



One thing I am sure of is that my name now is J.D. Davis, and while I'm not sure if I'll mostly be used in the infield or outfield, I'm as a good a bet as any to be the Mets' breakthrough player of the year. I think so, anyhow. And so does my mom.

I think the Mets' success is likely to have an inverse relationship to Davis' plate appearances - they acquired him as depth - perhaps better depth than has existed the last few years with the "pray for Wright's health" plan, but the less he plays the better an indication it is that 3 of Lowrie/Cano/Conforto/Nimmo are healthy, and someone has managed to nail down FirstBase with offensive production.

He's already looking like a good bet to gets some starts early. Whether or not he makes the most of it remains to be seen. I'll go with a .750 OPS over 200 ABs. Useful, but probably not better than that.
