Jeffy Wilpon, the third Trump son, will mumble through a press conference with the media on Sunday.

What do you expect him to say? Some guesses:
"We are committed to winning"
"We are in the process of finding the best possible General Manager"
"Mickey has done a great job"

yeah, that's what it'll be. It's just a press debriefing. Lots of change going on, tell the media the plan and they'll mostly parrot that all offseason.

starting the GM search immediately, though there are guys+ on playoff teams that we have to wait to talk to. etc.
We like Callaway and expect him back but obviously need to be on the same page with new GM.
Happy with the way the team has played in the second half. Full commitment to competing in 2019 and how we will do that is part of the interview, obviously.
Some stuff about Horwitz.
Some stuff about David coming to spring training to be with the team.
Something something Syracuse?

Yup.

No one will ask him why the Mets can't afford to fund a big market payroll.

Someone might ask him if they'll be in the market for big players and he'll hedge and say something about depending on how the new GM feels the team will be constructed, they could be in the market for anyone.

And then there will be 95 blog posts and articles written taking his comments has hard fact about what the Mets will or won't do.

I know Horowitz was a legend and popular with players as the buffer with the media. But I'm curious how the new person, hopefully well-versed in the changing media landscape, will work with the Wilpons. If Jeff is going to be the face of ownership and the subject of many critical stories, there's value in trotting him out more often -- at least more than an end-of-season wrap-up. He was uncomfortable in the press conference with Wright, but got better once he stopped reading from the index cards. (There are much better ways to do that than reading from index cards.)

As for this one, Ceets is probably right. Disappointing season, committed to winning, improved second half, new GM search progress, praise for Wright.

I wonder why, with the magic of internet, the Wilpons felt the need to announce a press conference nearly a week out. Wouldn't "Jeff will speak tomorrow" have been enough for a quorum of talking heads with press passes to clear their calendars?

Because doing things half-assed is in their Sterling DNA? I imagine a chunk
of 'news' will be Wright staying on with the organization in some capacity.

Also, why is Jeffy talking on Sunday? That's David Wright's last day as an active player. Unless Jeffy has to immediately get to the Hamptons there is no reason why he can't mumble his way through a press conference on Monday (which would also give the Mets another day of coverage).

Much has been written here about Jeff. I don't think anyone has accused him of being too bright.

Anthony DiComo has the story: Wilpon: New GM will decide fates of top execs

While Wilpon wants to keep the bulk of his current staff intact, he will leave the fates of assistant GM John Ricco, special assistants J.P. Ricciardi and Omar Minaya, manager Mickey Callaway and his coaches least partially in the hands of the new GM.

"They're not here no matter what," Wilpon said of that group. "They're part of the failure that we had this year, the same as I am and the rest of the front office. It's only fair to give somebody coming in an open book to bring in who they want. Would I like them to stay? Yes, from an ownership standpoint, I'd like them to stay. I'd like Mickey to stay. That's from ownership, though. We're going to rely on a new GM to give us that direction and guidance.

Is he throwing Sandy Alderson under the bus?

Wilpon declined to offer specifics on the Mets' budget or offseason plan, putting both under the stewardship of the incoming GM. He similarly said that many of the Mets' more austere policies in recent seasons, including their relatively small analytics department and their hesitance to spend on premium free agents, were due to recommendations from outgoing GM Sandy Alderson.

What a jive-turkey assclown. Fuck him, fuck them.

The new GM will have to major in Wilpon Management. They'll have no real freedom to do what they want.

Jeff doesn't know the meaning of the word "freedom".
And, he doesn't know the meaning of a lot of other words, either, one being "spend".

“We would loved to have shopped at the top of the market this year. Unfortunately with our GM situation haveing been unresolved at the start of the offseason we just didn’t have enough time to lay the groundwork for such large investments.

That being said we feel very confident about the moves we made. We feel very lucky to return great veterans like Bartolo Colon and Jose Bautista. We think 2019 is going to be a great year.”

All kidding aside, Jeff Wilpon made it clear that all final recommendations from the new GM would go through Jeff.

If anyone has wondered why the Mets still don’t have a GM despite knowing we’ve needed one since June, this is why. We all just saw the GM on Sunday.

Once the Mets sign Manny Machado (second choice: Bryce Harper) then I’ll start believing things Jeff Wilpon says.
