MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted July 8, 2018 Posted July 8, 2018 I'll predict he won't get the decision.Later
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2018 Posted July 9, 2018 DeGrom is the obvious choice. Really the only choice.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2018 Posted July 9, 2018 Very happy for Jake, the first Met to earn multiple selections as a Met since David Wright's last All-Star berth in 2013.Mets who've been the Mets' only pick more than once (pending lightning striking and Nimmo suddenly getting named):Ron Hunt 1964, 1966John Stearns 1977, 1980, 1982 (also picked alongside Mazzilli in 1979)Bobby Bonilla 1993, 1995Mike Piazza 1999, 2002 (also picked alongside teammates five times)Jacob deGrom 2015, 2018

Really the only choice.Mets have like 40 guys who could've gone.Did you mean some mystical merit based game? Well, Nimmo obviously. Asdrubal has fallen off a bit lately but he's still have a good season. He wouldn't be a bad pick. Zack Wheeler is 11th in qualified SP fWAR. That's probably border line but wouldn't be a wrong pick depending on who bows out/pitches Sunday and how many relievers you take. That's probably it though.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2018 Posted July 9, 2018 Oh, so you're talking about people who are technically eligible, the same way that I'm eligible to be pope because I was baptized Catholic, even though I'm now an athiest.I was talking about reasonable choices. Philip Evans is as likely to be an All-Star as I am to be the next pope. Jacob deGrom is the only Met who deserves to be an All-Star based on merit. If he wasn't around, then the Mets would get a pity choice.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 9, 2018 Posted July 9, 2018 You gotta be unmarried to be pope. My money is on Evans.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2018 Posted July 9, 2018 I'm sure you know more about this than I do, but I found this simple explanation, which means I have a shot:6. The next pope doesn’t necessarily have to be a cardinal. There are only two requirements for becoming pope: being male and being baptized into the Catholic Church. But although this technically leaves hundreds of millions of people eligible, they shouldn’t hold their breath. A non-cardinal hasn’t been chosen since 1378, when the selection of Urban VI brought about the Western Schism. And this more detailed explanation, which would rule me out, not because of marriage but because of parts of (1) and (4) and (5):A person who is elected as Roman Pontiff must be ordained a bishop immediately after election, if he does not already hold such office.Second:Can. 378 §1. In regard to the suitability of a candidate for the episcopacy, it is required that he is:1/ outstanding in solid faith, good morals, piety, zeal for souls, wisdom, prudence, and human virtues, and endowed with other qualities which make him suitable to fulfill the office in question;2/ of good reputation;3/ at least thirty-Five years old;4/ ordained to the presbyterate for at least Five years;5/ in possession of a doctorate or at least a licentiate in sacred scripture, theology, or canon law from an institute of higher studies approved by the Apostolic See, or at least truly expert in the same disciplines.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2018 Posted July 9, 2018 Well, I disagree. So you're wrong. Cabrera, Nimmo, and Wheeler (I guess) are having good seasons, but not deserving of All-Star. (Unless as a solo Mets pity selection.)
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2018 Posted July 9, 2018 Nimmo's the only other player this season who'd even come close.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 9, 2018 Posted July 9, 2018 Cabrera's sixth in fWAR among NL secondbaseman. He'd be a higher (and a defensible All-Star choice), but his baserunning has been pedestrian and his defense an unambiguous negative.Of course, that was before today's homerun. Tomorrow's data may disagree.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2018 Posted July 14, 2018 Aroldis Chapman is this year's entry in the annual Yanqui tradition of pulling out of the All-Star game citing a strain of his 'I don't want to pitch in the All-Star Game' tendon.

I don't know if he's pitched since then.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2018 Posted July 14, 2018 He hasn't pitched since way back ... yesterday. The Yanx only had a three run lead and, in fairness, the Indians did have the bottom of the lineup due up.
HahnSolo Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2018 Posted July 16, 2018 Its a rite of July: the annual tradition of Yankee fans imploring voters/managers to put 8, 9, even 10 MFYs on the all-star team but protesting violently when they actually have to play in the game.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2018 Posted July 16, 2018 Scherzer vs. Sale, with Dave Roberts announcing Jake will be first reliever in.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2018 Posted July 16, 2018 Not a surprise. I guess you could make the case Kershaw deserved it over Harvey in 2013.It is what it is.But this year, it usually ends with Jake getting screwed.

Harvey and Kershaw would have been close in any ballpark; same for deGrom and Scherzer. At least Roberts intends to use a Met at some point in the game, unlike Terry Collins in 2016.
