Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted April 27, 2018 Posted April 27, 2018 Gotta beat up on the bad teams, and the Padres are a bad team. LGM.

Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted April 27, 2018 Posted April 27, 2018 Considering that right now they have two functioning starters, Syndergaard and deGrom, it's really important that the Mets get ahead and win the games they pitch. Otherwise you have to rely on bullpen magic and late-inning heroics, which are nice when they happen, but are not a sustainable game plan.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted April 27, 2018 Posted April 27, 2018 Hopefully the Mets mash the Padres this weekend. Rattling off three wins would be really beneficial. And you have to make hay against the teams that carry the adjective of "lowly".

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted April 27, 2018 Posted April 27, 2018 I really hope that Vargas gives us a boost in this department. I know it's far from a sure thing, but it's what I'm hoping for.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted April 27, 2018 Posted April 27, 2018 I have more faith in Matz or Wheeler or Gsellman figuring it out than Vargas, who isn't particularly good. Mets lineup is gonna have to pick it up a little bit if we're gonna start relying on a league average type guy like Vargas.
Guest d'Kong76 Guests Posted April 27, 2018 Posted April 27, 2018 They're gonna need to pick it up regardless of who you don't like pitching.

He could be okay though. and that's fine too, but at this juncture I'd still kinda rather take my chances with the guys with upside. well if Matz and Wheeler became as good as deGrom and Syndergaard, or even next tier, maybe they don't need to pick it up quite as much? They should though, because because Frazier and Cabrera can't carry everyone. Conforto's doing okay and Nimmo, Lagares and Flores are doing good in limited time, but the rest of those guys really need to step it up.

Well, at least when Vargas gets back they will be.We really needed to get a good, reliable #3.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted April 27, 2018 Posted April 27, 2018 I'm really not looking for Vargas to be spectacular. I want him to give us seven decent innings.
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted April 27, 2018 Posted April 27, 2018 Vargas works at 86 mphHe better be very crafty

I’ll watch him pitch a little and see how he does before I decide that he sucks.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted April 27, 2018 Posted April 27, 2018 get out of here with pitcher wins.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted April 27, 2018 Posted April 27, 2018 Yeah as stinky as the relief pitching has been at times, and as bad as the butt-end starters have been, we lose because we're not scoring enough. Conforto, Ces, Bruce all gotta start whacking.

This year they're pitching bad because, um, they're just bad. They have no excuses (unless they're hurt and not telling anyone, which is a venerable Mets tradition). But wasting that fantastic start by Thor is just criminal. They have dead spots in their order from 6-9, and they just can't get by with it any more.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted April 27, 2018 Posted April 27, 2018 Our catchers hitting .100 and throwing the ball away is just killing me.
Guest d'Kong76 Guests Posted April 27, 2018 Posted April 27, 2018 6-8 have been bad, they were talking about it either yesterday or daybefore. It's like flushing a third of the game down the terlette.

batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted April 27, 2018 Posted April 27, 2018 I look at the team's stats and I don't have a fucking clue as to how the Mets had the NL's best record for most of the season. It looks now like they're finally regressing to the pumpkins that most analysts predicted they'd be.

We, meaning the reasonable folks reading this.okay, but we're not talking generally, we're talking specifically. flat out sucked? maybe. is not good? not hard. Vargas is a specific example of that. The best pitchers tend to accumulate wins because they're typically on the mound more, regularly, and longer. They also get more vitamin D. It's like looking at beer sales volume and concluding that Citi Field is the most popular bar in NYC. Gonzalez too, but at least there seems to be some indication of bad luck there ,and he walks some.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted April 27, 2018 Posted April 27, 2018 I can't remember Conforto's last xbh.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted April 27, 2018 Posted April 27, 2018 I tend to wonder if they kept the right rookie from last year. Maybe they should have gone with Smitty and sent Rosey back for more seasoning.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted April 27, 2018 Posted April 27, 2018 I'm ready for Peter Alonso. Guy is mashing.
