Do these muthafuckas ever hit balls AT people?!?
I don't mean to demean their comeback last night or their lead tonight (well, I sorta do) but every soft piece of shit the Nats have made over the last 8 innings or so have landed just out of reach, or dribbled between, fielders.

If the team was Florida, you could say they learned that from Jeter.

Maybe we should trade for a catcher after all.

Part of that is some underwhelming Metly infielding.

Buncha shit at bats at key times: Reyes, Frazier, Cabrera.

I don't understand why you pinch hit the guy who's 0 for 2018 in that 6th inning. Conforto was available no?

I get the lefty-righty thing, but if the RH batter is 0 for 16 and the lefty batter is Conforto, I think you have to throw the splits out the window.

I thought it was a real good sign the other day when Calloway PH Gonzalez against a LH hitter. I guess that didn't last.

I really thought Jose was going to come through there. Really anyone on a major league roster needed to come though there, get the run in somehow.

I'm beginning to think we really do need to go and trade for a No. 1 catcher. Someone who can do it offensively and defensively, just an everyday thing. I'm not convinced Plawecki is that guy injured or not. We were burned when we used Plawecki as the everyday guy before due to injury, though he was more like Nido then, just up.

Really tough this time of year, no?

Have to find a trading partner who doesn't want a good catcher. Trading from a
a position of desperation means they'll take it up the ass with who they part with.
Team is in first place, teams aren't going to line up to do the Mets any favors with-
out getting something really substantial in return. My guess is we're stuck with what
we have for now and are going to have to make do.

We need to stop playing our 5th best outfielder, Bruce, more than the other guys. And Cespedes needs to get going.

And Rosario.

Finding a catcher in april is gonna be hard. Lobaton..well, he sucks. sometimes he has good years/stretches. Maybe Nido has some talent. Best we can hope for is that Plawecki's injury is in fact minor and that his recent history this year and last year is what he'll give us going forward.

You need to chill on Bruce for a few weeks and see what happens.

see what happens? he's 31. He's not going to 'break out' and be something other than what he is. Unless you mean Nimmo and Lagares and Conforto will suddenly suck or get hurt?

Yes, see what happens. Yesterday you said, "Jay Bruce sucks." He doesn't
suck and is signed for three years for substantial money. He's not going to
ride the pine. You're only optimistic Mets fan and Mr. Small Sample Size when
it fits who you like for whatever reasons.

Mr. small sample size? that's a real thing for one, and the other is that I'm referencing the entire juiced ball era (which really juices Bruce's one skill to make him better) as the sample. Nimmo's sample is smaller, but it includes last year. I'm including Cespedes history too, which is why I rank him above Bruce. Lagares is less obvious, depends how you feel about defense, but fine, call Bruce the 4th outfielder if you like.

Since the start of 2016 Brandon Nimmo (and Conforto, and Cespedes, and Granderson, and Lagares) have been worth more fWAR as a Met than Jay Bruce.

Lagares is a dreadful hitter, a minor league hitter, really, if even that. But Bruce's splits are so pronounced that he's awful against lefties, about as bad as Lagares is against lefties, albeit with more power. But when you factor in Lagares's defense, Bruce should almost never be starting against lefties over Lagares.

Yes, and maybe I'm wrong but in other scenarios you'd be the, "meh, it's
only 16 games so I'm not going to get my shorts in a knot just yet" guy.
I checked and you were indeed against the signing and I'll give you that.
On the other hand, I 'Expected' a good season and I'm rooting for that.
Not everything in baseball can be explained on a spreadsheet, otherwise
they could just run sim games on Watson and not bother wasting 3 1/2
hours everyday playing the actual games.

yes, my argument here isn't that Bruce has been meh this season, it's that he's not good, period. I've been against it every time we've signed him.

Sure, baseball's not played on a spreadsheet, but the mountains of data certainly strongly inform the idea that Bruce's ceiling is basically league average. At least he has a 13.6 BB% so far this year, but THAT is probably just small sample stuff.
