Leaving Las Vegas: The 51s in 2018

Itâ€™s been a challenging time for manager Tony DeFrancesco (capital D) and his Las Vegas 51s, as providing reinforcements to the big leagues, absorbing rehabbers, retirements and injuries have changed the complexion of his roster on a daily basis, This has no doubt contributed to 2-5 week after the team seemingly gained a little traction, having previously reeled off three straight wins over the Sacramento Bees.

Among the Vegas heartbreaks is the news that Finn the Bat Dog wonâ€™t be accompanying the team in their move to Syracuse. Fetching the 51 lumber from the plate, bringing water to umpires, and delighting paying customers for the past several seasons, and Finn has provided an outstanding work model for a generation of Mets prospects on the verge of the big leagues, but no more. Theyâ€™ll have to find a new pooch in the â€˜Cuse.

But the Chinese character for â€œcrisisâ€ is a combination of â€œdangerâ€ and â€œopportunity.â€ I donâ€™t know if thatâ€™s actually true or just some motivational speaker claptrap, but when you look at danger, look no further than the curious case of Andrew Church. Where the opportunity appears is in the bat of Kevin Kaczmarski. In a system lacking outfield bats in the upper levels, Kevo received a big-league Spring Training invitation this year, but then, due either to injury or professional strategy, was held back in the professional limbo of Extended Spring Training, and didnâ€™t have his season launched until mid-May. But man, he did a week in St. Lucie and then hit Las Vegas like a Panzer blitz KK struck out as a pinch hitter in his first appearance, but in the five games since he has started and hit. And hit and hit, racking up 12 hits and a pair of walks in five games, waking up this morning with a .529 / .545 / .706 // 1.251 line that is small-sample- and PCL-related, but still boner-inducing. Kacz led off yesterday, going 4-5. In another universe, he might have had a callup. But here in our universe, the Mets needed a right-handed bat, and called on Tony Bautista.

Hey, speaking of left-handed outfielders, Matt den Dekker (little d) has been hitting all season long. With power too. His eight homers have helped him to a .300 / .342 / .512 // .854. He too has already been called up in some alternate time lines. He also still looks like a sad angel.

The 51s take on the Reno Aces tonight, with nominal ace Chris Flexen matching up against the always-dangerous TBD, as Las Vegas looks to regroup from their position 10.0 games out in the Pacific Coast League Pacific Southern Division, aka DFL.

Aaron Laffey took a hateful and vicious beating last night from New Orleans. Already down 8-1 entering the fourth inning, he took the mound and allowed the first six batters to reach base, before manager Tony DeFrancesco felt a humanitarian twang in his heart and mercifully pulled him from the game. His incredible final line was 14 runs allowed, 12 earned, in three innings.

And by the end of the evening, it came to pass that this was his final final line, as Laffey became the second 51s pitcher this spring to follow an irredeemably terrible start by announcing his retirement before leaving the clubhouse. Best wishes in whatever you do next, Aaron.

The game well out of hand, the pitching was actually solid the rest of the way, with backup backup catcher Jeff Glenn pitching two mopup innings at the end, allowing no runs on one hit. Dominic Smith, who isn't a Met, but has been slumping so badly that he might as well be, went 3-5 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored.

While the Mets may seem to be cornering the market on monstrously large pitchers, pitching the middle innings for the Baby Cakes was a character named Jumbo Diaz, a former Cincinnati Red and (briefly) Tampa Bay Ray officially listed at 6'4" and 315 pounds.

Smith's walk rate has gone up without a noticeable bump in his strikeouts; that he has a .357 OBP despite slumping is actually encouraging. The power has been absent, though. You wonder if he's nursing an injury, but then again a number of players (Herrera and Cecchini just off the top of my head) have struggled on a return trip to Vegas. It's worth wondering if that's a case of players getting discouraged, if it's a statistical fluke, or if there's something more to it than that. All eight of the Las Vegas 51s starting players, apart from pitcher Cody Martin, got themselves into the hit column last night, but the feat was perfunctory (they each garnered exactly one hit), ineffectual (none of the eight hits went for extra bases), and and anticlimactic (they were spread thinly enough so as to allow but a single two-run rally), as the 51s were downed by the Colorado Springs Sky Sox, 6-2.

Leadoff hitter Kevin Kaczmarski has come back to earth a little in June, but a .314 batting average and .359 on-base percentage have still been pretty healthy, bringing his overall figures down to a still robust .375 and .415. Latecomer Christian ColÃ³n has also established himself of late in the lineup, putting up an overall .292 / .338 / .444 // .782 line while staffing second base in Gavin Cecchini's absence.

The story on the pitching side has been Drew Smith, who really seems to have turned a corner. Drew hasn't been scored upon in five weeks, save for a single unearned run several weeks back, going 14 innings in that period from 5.54 to 2.67. He has struck out 27 and walked 11 in 27 innings giving up just two homers, held opposing hitters to a .202 batting average, and there's a good chance we'll see a lot of him over the second half.

As the Howard Hughes Corporation builds them a new ballpark in downtown Summerlin, the 51s are limping a little bit through their last year as a New York Mets affiliate, with updraft caused by injuries and failures at the big league level creating roster volatility below. Unable to find traction in such a state, with talent coming and going, and major roles in a flux (outfielder Patrick Kivlehan is the firstbaseman of the moment), the 51s sit in fourth and last place in Pacific Coast League Pacific South Division, at 27-39, a .409 winning percentage.

The additions of Peter Alonso and Jeff McNeil â€” two of the top players in the Eastern League at the time of their launching â€” has correlated (I could hardly say "coincided" â€” with a nice run of five of their last six for The Las Vegas 51s. The slugging firstbaseman is ripping it to the tune of .300 / .417 / .633 // 1.050, with 11 RBI, seven of them in the three-homer game. The slashing infielder has more or less kept pace, with a .387 / .444 / .516 // .961. Those are the type of numbers that lead teams into win streaks, and it's working so far.

Taking the mound today was hard-luck sad-sack Drew Gagnon. With the 51s holding off on their scoring in the 4-3 win, Drew got another no-decision, leaving him still winless in 2018, despite four straight quality starts. The bullpen is going to miss Drew Smith and Tim Peterson, as they've contributed all season to the Las Vegas cause. Look for lefties Ian Kroll and Buddy Baumann to get more work. Righty Jacob Rhame is also having his mettle tested in this hot streak, going scoreless in six of his last seven performances, covering 7 2/3 innings.

The little run has been a long time coming for the 51s, and even after the hot week, still sit in fourth and last place in the Pacific Coast League Pacific South Division, ten games out of first and five and a half out of third.

Apart from all the players they've given to the Mets to restock with, they still have nine of their own out with one owie or another. One day at a time, man.

Zach Borenstein will be the Las Vegas 51s' sole representative in the AAA All-Star Game, scheduled for tomorrow night in Columbus.

Zach, who is the lone 51 batsman to be with the team all season, neither being sent up nor sent down, being neither injured nor deactivated, leads the team in most offensive counting categories, including hits (79), homers (19), and RBI (61). He has also struck out 119 times. A torrid pace.

Like several players with Mets associations (Ty Kelly, Cody Decker, Ike Davis, Tyler Herron, Zach Thornton, Josh Zeid), Borenstein also represented Israel in the 2017 World Baseball Classic.

Zach Borenstein went 1-5 with a double, and RBI, and a run scored, playing the entire game in left field as the PCL All-Stars won a wild one over the International League All-Stars, 12-7.

The AAA leagues got right back in action tonight, as the 51s lead the Albuquerque Isotopes 3-0 in the third on the strength of double by Pete Alonso and Colton Plaia. Jeff McNeil had an 18-game hitting streak stopped in his last game before the All-Star Break. He ended up going 0-2 with two walks and an RBI in that game, which, if you've got to end a hitting streak, that's a better way to do it than most. He's 0-2 tonight, with his average plummeting to .384.

Las Vegas has been hotter than, well, Las Vegas. They're winning 5-1 tonight behind a three-run homer by Cody Asche. There's still a lot of innings to play, but after the season had seemed lost, they've won 12 of their last 16, pulling within five games of first. With El Paso losing, they could be within three before their heads hit the pilloow.

After hanging on for a 5-4 victory over their intra-state rivals The Reno Aces (two-inning, five strikeout save by Guerson Batista, thank you very much), The Las Vegas 51s have now run their record to 19-13 since June 16. Going back to June 16 isn't exactly the most flattering ways to frame their recent run of winning ball, but it's significant in that it's the day that Jeff McNeil and Peter Alonso joined the team.

While Alonso started off hot, he's cooled off since the Future's Game and is now hitting an adjustment period as he looks at his AAA line of .196 / .323 / .477 // .800 through his first 130 plate appearances in The Pacific Coast League. While nobody wants to be on the interstate, however, there are worse things than slumping to an .800 OPS.

Jeffy McNeil, on the other hand, was born to raise hell in AAA. While it's not unusual for a hitter to improve on his AA line after a promotion to the offense rich PCL, it sure is if the guy came up from Binghamton with a .327 / .402 / .626 // 1.029. But hell yeah, Def Jeff has improved even from that lofty baseline, and has put on a .372 / .423 / .612 // 1.035 show since his promotion in a meaningful 137 plate appearances since the promotion. Since joining Vegas, he's played 23 games at second but more recently has appeared three times at third and twice in left.

Some prospect watchers are attributing his breakthrough this year to him using a new bat. That seems dubious on the surface, but there is evidence in support.

Does his line make you feel randy? I think it does! I think the next place he'll appear isn't second or third, but in Flushing.

Of course, the turnaround in Las Vegas isn't all fueled by offense. Offense is rarely a problem in Vegas, but now, the starting pitching is really starting to bear down and keep the 51s in games. Chris Flexen, for instance, is done fucking around. His 6-6 / 4.39 isn't that eye-catching even in the PCL, until you look at his July numbers. in The Month of Water Lillies, Flexie has started three games, gone 2-0, and giving up just 1.42 earnies per game in 19 innings even. He's struck out 14 and walked only four in that time and given up only 10 hits. He's not as flexible as all that, that Flexie.

Also coming into his own in recent weeks has been the aforementioned fireballer Guerson Batista. Following a 6.97 ERA in May, and a 4.50 figure in June, GB has laid down a 3.38 ERA in July through his first eight innings. Let's hope it's this last version of him (14.625 strikeouts/9!) that we get when he inevitably returns to the Mets bullpen.

While the 51s are still in fourth and last place in The Pacific Coast League Pacific Southern Division, they've in fact pulled back into contention, sitting only six games behind The El Paso Chihuahuas at 47-53. They take on the Aces again today with the resurgent and angry Corey Oswalt on the bump.

While you were sleeping, Vegas drubbed the Reno squad last night, 15-6, collecting four homers, including a solo shot (Colton Plaia), a two-run job (Zach Borenstein), a three run blast (Pete Alonso), and a grand salami (Phil Evans). A cycle of sorts! Newest pitcher Bobby Wahl threw the final 1 1/3, picking up right where he left off, giving up no runs and no hits, striking out three and walking one.

The win didn't help them gain on the first-place Chihuahuas, but they did pull within a game of the third-place Isotopes.

The whole league is off today as Vegas travels all the way to Nashville to take on Wahl's recent former squad.

Currently up 7â€“1 over their upstate rival Reno Aces, the Las Vegas 51s continue to play some of their best, cleanest, most consistent ball of the year. And if they hang on â€™till the wire tonight, theyâ€™ll lay their heads on their sweet pillows as a .500 team.

You may laugh at that modest achievement, but this is at team that has had starters with ERAs of 7.17 (P.J. Conlon in 16 starts); 6.65 (Cody Martin, 14 starts); 6.02 (Cody Martin, 11 starts);10.30 (Nabil Crismatt, 6 starts); 13.50; (Vance Worley, 4 starts); 48.00 (AJ. Griffin in 2 starts); 18.00 (Aaron Laffey, 2 starts); 14.63 (Mickey Jannis, two starts). The rest havenâ€™t pub up ERAs much lower, but since the last month or so, folks have been picking each other up, giving them a chance in every game, while winning seven of the last 10.

Know who really deserves a bit o' credit. Scott Copeland, thatâ€™s who. The journeyman pitcher has bounced between AA and the majors this season, and now, halfway between, heâ€™s put up an ERA of 3.00 in his AAA numbers.

Tired of seeing relievers come and relievers go, with none of them lefties? I know you are! Well, the guy you need to be asking about is Ian Krol. The Angels and Braves castoff is undefeated in three decisions and four save opportunities this season, and scoreless pitching in his last five appearances covering 6 2/3 innings has his ERA down to 2.96. Thatâ€™s like a run lower in a normal environment, or something.

But all that offense in the environment really has to make the hitters happy, right? Well, if youâ€™re Bryce Brentz, youâ€™re surely coming around to the idea that it should. With a season marred by injury and underperformance, the powerful right fielder has come into his own since coming off the DL in August, going 6-24, with three of those hits leaving the park, upping his overall line to .267 / .336 / 565 // .901. When you share a lineup with the likes of Patrick Kivlehan, Pete Alonso, and Kevin Kaczmarski, that will PLAY.

And the Aliens are showing the world THEY can play. If they hang on tonight (and why shouldnâ€™t they?), they will have reached the .500 watermark, where they currently sit 8.5 games of the pace. They should be closer, you might think. But those damned El Paso Chihuahuas wonâ€™t lose, now having won seven in a row.

Be patient. They head into Chuco Town next weekend.

Yesterday the 51's continued their torrid stretch, playing out the completion of their previously suspended game and walking away with a 3-1 victory over The Reno Aces.

In the regularly scheduled game, Vegas entered the bottom of the eighth clinging on to a 3-2 lead, before opening up on Reno with 11 circuits for a runaway 14-2 win. The alleged Aces didn't even send a position player to the mound.

Drew Gagnon (7-inning complete game, one run allowed, 10 strikeouts and 1 walk) and Scott Copeland provided solid starting pitching for the suddenly stabilized Vegas rotation. Pete Alonso homered in the opener and is now at .260 / .362 / .56 // .931. Fellow hot hands Patrick Kivlehan and Bryce Brentz went yard in game two. Brentz had 6 RBI!

I'd say they were the hottest team in the PCL if The Nashville Sounds weren't riding a 13-game win streak. Nashville is still 10 games out in their very-not-Pacific division, but they're somehow hotter than their parent Oakland A's.
