Leaving Las Vegas: The 51s in 2018

The Mets have announced new Las Vegas manager Tony DeFrancesco's squad for 2018. Interestingly, their house cleaning included training staff. The Mets still haven't announced the big league training staff, so that means if 51s trainer Deb Iwawow isn't being given the mets job, she's hout.

The 2018 staff is as follows:

• Manager: Tony DeFrancesco
  TonManaged the AAA Fresno Grizzlies in the Houston system the last three years. He was the interim manager of the Astros back in 2012.
  
  
  
• Pitching Coach: Glenn Abbott
  Glennie had been the pitching coach for Binghamton the last five seasons. Everybody's played for Glennie.
  
  
  
• Hitting Coach: Joel Chimelis
  Joel, whose name sounds like he should be the president of FOX Searchlight Pictures of something, was also a long-time member of the Astros' development team, having served most recently as the Low-A Midwest League Quad City Bandits hitting coach. Joel is also a rare guy who actually lost his chance to the 1994 players strike. He took the field in spring training as a replacement, and though nothing came of that, folks remembered, and when he was called up to join the actual non-replacement Giants in 1995, the players shunned him, and fearing a player revolt, the Giants sent him down after two days and no appearances.)\
  
  
  
• Bullpen Coach: Jeremy Accardo
  Having finished his pitching career as recently as 2015, Accardo spent 2017 as pitching coach of the rookie-level Gulf Coast Mets. I didn't even know minor league teams hired bullpen coaches.
  
  
  
• Athletic Trainer: Grant Hufford
  Grant comes to the Mets from — you guessed it — the Astros, having most recently served with the short-season low-A Appalachian League Greenville Astros, keeping them in top condition for their matchups with the Kingsport Mets. Before that he was with the Lawrence Orthopedic Surgery Clinic in Lawrence, Kansas and served as athletic trainer for the Baldwin High School teams. Now he's a heartbeat from the big leagues. Go, Grant!
  
  
  
• Assistant Athletic Trainer: Kiyoshi Tada
  Kiyoshi Tada has been in the Mets organization since 2011, mostly with Brooklyn, but he worked for the low-A Columbia Fireflies in the Sally League last season. Assistant trainers also sound like a luxury in the minors, but Yoshi wants you to know that he is not here for your bullshit.
  
  
  
• Strength and Conditioning Coach: Josh Fields
  Last but not least, Josh Fields is the only member of the Las Vegas staff returning from 2017, so I'll bet my Marshall Crenshaw vinyl that he's got a hook with Barwis.

The 51s were going to need a roster in time for their opener tomorrow and now they have one.

A few surprises are always in store, and he 51s don't disappoint!

Pitchers:

• A.J. Griffin is as-yet unassigned. It wasn't clear whether the Mets were going to deploy him initially as a starter or a reliever, and the answer is ... neither, yet.
  
• This allows Chris Flexen to take the fifth slot in the rotation, instead of returning to Bingo, from where he leapfrogged to the big leagues last year.
  
• Professor Griff isn't the only late-signed guy brough in on a minor league contract who is waiting on a job. Fernando Abad is also rosterless.
  
• With David Roseboom and Kelly Secrest making the cut, 51s manager Tony DeFrancesco brags about having four lefthanded relievers to turn to, even without Abad.
  
• Logan Taylor returns to the 51s after his 2017 was cut short after he was physically assaulted.

Catchers:

• The initial group announced is 26 guys, and that includes three catchers. That's the first surprise. I don't know if they initially get a 26-man limit, but reportedly, Jeff Glenn is going to be sort of a catcher/coach, activated as needed. More on that as details become available.
  
• The second surprise is that Tomás Nido isn't going west, but returning to Binghamton to try to improve on last year's poor showing there.

Infielders:

L.J. Mazzilli appears to have finally escaped Bingo. With the team carrying only four outfielders, L.J. will be a super-utility man, possibly seeing more time in the outfield than at second.

• Jhoan Urena, who was finally healthy and put together a bang-up season in St. Lucie last year, had a chance to make the 51s, but lost out to third-baseman/DH Matt Oberste.

Outfielders:

• Not only are the 51s carrying but four outfielders, but surprisingly, Jayce Boyd and Kevin Kaczmarksi won't be among them. Punchless ballhawk Patrick Biondi appears to have beaten out those two as well as Kevin Taylor, John Mora, and Champ Stuart for the last spot. Bitterness all around!

With relievers having a tougher time of it than most, the Las Vegas 51s have mostly taken it on the chin so far this season, with a 9-6 victory last night over El Paso raising their record to 4-8, a much needed lift following the 10-0 drubbing the Chihuahuas had handed them the day before.

L.J. Mazzilli had actually been perhaps their hottest hitter at the time of his trade, but Ty Kelly has been a sexy and unstoppable beast ever since, posting a Bondsian 1.326 OPS with four homers and 11 RBI thus far, making for a formidable heart of the lineup with Dominic Smith and Zach Borenstein.

Not holding up his end at all has been Bryce Brentz. The late-in-the-offseason waiver claim has struck out 13 time in 39 at-bats and managed only six singles and a walk in the same amount of time.

Johnny Monell went 2-5 in his first game back.

A pleasant exception to the Vegas bullpen woes has been Tim Peterson. The 2012 20th round draftee is unscored-upon in six innings thus far, yielding only three hits and three walks while striking out 14. Fuck and yeah. Look for him in Flushing soon. He probably would have appeared already if he had been on the roster.

Getting the brief promotion instead of Peterson was starter Corey Oswalt. Oz got touched for three runs in four innings in his first start, but then knocked El Paso dead with a five-inning, one-hit start on the road, striking out seven and walking three.

A.J. Griffin got obliterated in his first start. Absolutely atomized. Exactly what you thought might happen to the slowest starter in MLB if he's sent to the PCL, where the breaking stuff doesn't tend to break. He was immediately removed from the roster, but he's seemingly being reactivated, as he's tonight's scheduled starter. It strikes me as sort of cheap to be able to de-activate starting pitchers between starts, but he's replacing Mickey Jannis in the rotation, as Jannis returns to his long purgatorio in Binghamton, having found a PCL that was no more hospitable to knucklers than it was to breaking pitches, pounded for a 14.63 ERA.

As Griffin's ERA after one start is 34.71, Jannis might be back sooner than he realizes.

Rehabbing Jason Vargas starts tonight at home for Las Vegas. Hopefully, he doesn't run into the same conditions that has already ended to A.J. Griffin's tenure in the organization after two games, gotten Mickey Jannis demoted, and left P.J. Conlon utterly powerless (double-digit ERA through three starts!!)

Vegas has stumbled to 2-5 over the last week, losing the last four in a row, giving up nine or more runs in seven of the last nine games. In short, they're not getting anybody out.

It's a testimony to how otherworldly hot Ty Kelly's start was that his OPS now sits at a healthy .917 after going 1-for-his-last-24. Zach Borenstein (.323 / .440 / .581 // 1.021) remains the anchor of the lineup, with Bryce Brentz joining the show of late, hitting three homers this week after a frigid start.

Tim Peterson is the bullpen ace, striking out 19 in 10 innings, to the tune of a 1.80 ERA, with outfielder Matt den Decker and reserve catcher Colton Plaia each having appeared in two games yielding no runs in four innings total. But when position players are pitching, nothing is really all that good, and the 51s are already 8.0 games out, in last place in the PCL's Pacific Southern Division. Tonight, it's the first place El Paso Chihuahuas nipping at their ankles, so wish Vargas all the luck he can handle. He'll need it.

Accountability reigns. With the activation of Vance Worley and the return of Logan Taylor from the DL, the 51s are cramming 15 pitchers onto their roster, which has somehow ballooned to 27 dudes. There still wasn't room for everybody, so Kelly Secrest had to go. Released. Kaput. Secrest, a 2014 draftee out of UNC Wilmington, had had a good little minor league career going. He'd never had a dominant season, but never really had a bad one, and moved up regularly. A slow start in the Pacific Coast League (7 ER in 5 2/3 innings) got him sent packing though. Hard times in the desert.

Which is exactly what Worley is seeing. The eight-year big league vet debuted today with a three-inning, five run stint. You maybe might have given him a warm-up start at a lower-level, Mets, but his arrival and the return of Corey Oswalt should stabilize a fluxing Las Vegas rotation for a bit, along with P.J. Conlon, Chris Flexen, and Drew Gagnon.

Bryce Brentz has continued his red hot hitting and is likely a name the Mets are taking a long look at right now as they consider the fate of Yoenis Céspedes, going .320 / .393 / .720 // 1.113 over the last week, following a slow start.

The former Red Sock has led the 51s on a minor resurgence as they took four in a row this week. A one-run loss this afternoon dropped them to a still-strong 4-2 on the week, helping pull them out of the cellar into a tie with Albuquerque for third place in the Pacific Coast League Pacific Southern Division.

While the juggling of P.J. Conlon and Corey Oswalt between the majors and minors has upended a period of seeming stability for the 51s, forcing reliever Drew Smith into the rotation, it's not like they were playing so good they didn't need some shaking up. Hanging on for a 10-8 victory over Salt Lake last night, they averted a four-game sweep and ended a four-game losing streak, bringing their record, such as it is, up to 2-5 on the week, dropping them deeper in last, 8.0 games off the pace in the Pacific Coast League Pacific Southern Division (I think they could have gotten "Pacific" in there one more time, to represent this division of four land-locked teams), and 3.0 games out of third.

But it's Las Vegas, so there's always somebody hitting. Unfortunately, Bryce Brentz, one of their hottest hitters, has hit the DL after fouling a ball off his foot. That makes two Vegas outfielders on the DL (along with Kevin Kaczmarski) and they still haven't activated Wuilmer Becerra, whose career seems to be at the reckoning point.

One place they are also getting a tasty amount of O from is the middle infield. Luis Guillorme continues to pile up hits and walks, and went to bed last night with a .300 / .394 / .433 // .828 line. If he's done something about that spare tire he brought to spring training, he's a good bet to get a look this summer. Playing along side him is our old friend, 2012 first-rounder Gavin Cecchini, outhitting his double-play partner with a .317 / .361 / .505 // .866 showing.

Chris Flexen continues to anchor the rotation, and by "anchor," I mean that he alone has been successful, with a 3.82 ERA through his first five starts and 30 2/3 innings. I imagine if the timing was right, he would have gotten Conlon's call last night. Flexie has whiffed 25 and walked eight and is not here for your PCL offensive outburst bullshit.

But the guy you're REALLY bound to see soon is Buddy Baumann. Claimed on waivers from San Diego shortly before the Mets and Pads clashed, Buddy looks to join the long tradition of BB-initialed Mets, having put up a Liliputian 0.79 ERA through his first 12 appearances. That's one run in 11 1/3 innings. If you don't think that SCREAMS "SECOND LEFTY!" I submit to you the .077 batting average figure lefties have put up against him. Most of this bad-ass pitching has been on behalf of the Padres Albuquerque affiliate, so the big squad may not be in a rush to see him, but I bet he's only a few weeks away from being a Met. The next bullpen meltdown (Heaven forbid) could accelerate that.

You know who's not going to plug in any gaps in the Mets rotation? Vance Worley, that's who. Not anytime soon, anyhow. Worley got raked, caked, and staked yesterday for nine runs in 4 2/3 innings. Four homers allowed. That's just not getting it done. I don't care if you're pitching on the moon. Worley is one of six pitchers the 51s have used this season with double-digit ERAs.

You know who they should use as pitchers? Hitters! Centerfielder Matt den Dekker has a 0.00 ERA after 2.0 innings and catcher Colton Plaia has given 4.0 innings to the cause and come out with a 2.25 ERA. One run six innings for the two of them!

Colton could use the work. The recent activation of Jeff Glenn from the DL along with the demotion of the Tomás Nido has left the catching corps a might crowded, with Plaia, Glenn, and Nido joining Johnny Monell to form a four-man catching staff.

Though Worley's former Phillie teammate Cody Asche is only 10-42 with 4 walks since joining the 51s, seven of his 10 hits (3 doubles, 1 triple, 3 homers) have been for extra bags, adding up to an impressive .571 slugging percentage. Need somebody to get on? Well until today, that someone was Asche's fellow infielder Luis Guillorme, working his way through the circuit to the tune of a .394 OBP.

Basically, Chris Flexen (3-3, 3.40) is the only starter you want out there. The rest are currently leaving the mound looking like some kind of crime scene. And so, despite a neat, little 4-2 record this week, the 51s enjoyed today's off day while sitting 7.0 games of the pace in the Pacific Coast League Southern Division, fourth of four teams.

We're not sure yet, however, that the Nationals will end up in Las Vegas. I found this article (What MLB team might affiliate with the Las Vegas 51s?) which suggests that, when the game of musical chairs ends, the team that lands in Vegas would likely be one of the following: Brewers, Astros, Athletics, Orioles, Royals, Diamondbacks, Twins, Rangers, Nationals and Mariners.

I hope it's the Nationals. Even though having a far-away AAA affiliate is, overall, just a minor disadvantage, I'd rather see the Nationals be the team to get that disadvantage.

Currently leading 4-0 over The Sacramento River Cats, The Las Vegas 51s are looking to get back onto the winning track after losing the last three of a four-game set to Tacoma. A lot of new faces have been brought in recently by the organization, but the problem remains mostly starting pitching. Yesterday they tried a bucket brigade game, with three relievers (Logan Taylor, Kevin McGowan, and Tim Peterson) handing off to each other, but while holding the Raniers to three runs, still managed to lose, 3-1. McGowan had the best showing of the three, with one run allowed in four innings, but Taylor hit the DL after the game, so I guess it's no more starts for him.

Familiar names on the Raniers include a slumming Jayson Werth (working on a minor league deal with the Mariners, former Mets hero Kirk Nieuwenhuis, and former Met-who-was-totally-in-over-his-head-with-his-girlfriend Danny Muno.

One of tonight's runs came virtue of a double by Johnny Monell, who then came around to score. Monell, who was released at the end of spring training before signing with the Mets two weeks, later, is starting to look like he has the rust off, hitting .263 / .343 / .378 // .721, and has a regional chance to displace Tomás Nido as the Mets backup catcher until Kevin Plawecki is ready.

Also coming on strong in recent weeks has been centerfielder Matthew den Dekker, going .368 / .413 / .471 // .884 in May. He even has 7 homers, which is uncharacteristic pop for the little dude.

You know what else in uncharacteristic? Brand new pitcher Cody Martin shutting out the River Cats into the third inning. That may not sound like much, but this is a team that has dug a lot of early holes this season, trying to slug their way back into games, and usually coming up short. Go, Cody Martin!

Kevin Plawecki and Hansel Robles began their rehab assignments with Las Vegas last night. Plaw caught and went 1-3 with a two-run homer in the 51s 4-3 victory, yielding to Johnny Monell after five innings.

It’s been a challenging time for manager Tony DeFrancesco (capital D) and his Las Vegas 51s, as providing reinforcements to the big leagues, absorbing rehabbers, retirements and injuries have changed the complexion of his roster on a daily basis, This has no doubt contributed to 2-5 week after the team seemingly gained a little traction, having previously reeled off three straight wins over the Sacramento Bees.

Among the Vegas heartbreaks is the news that Finn the Bat Dog won’t be accompanying the team in their move to Syracuse. Fetching the 51 lumber from the plate, bringing water to umpires, and delighting paying customers for the past several seasons, and Finn has provided an outstanding work model for a generation of Mets prospects on the verge of the big leagues, but no more. They’ll have to find a new pooch in the ‘Cuse.

But the Chinese character for “crisis” is a combination of “danger” and “opportunity.” I don’t know if that’s actually true or just some US motivational speaker claptrap, but when you look at danger, look no further than the curious case of Andrew Church. Churchie, the Mets’ second-round pick back in 2013, was pitching kind of rotten for Binghamton (1-5, 6.44), but the Mets’ needs created an updraft, and he got himself a ticket to Vegas to get his first start in AAA. His first appearance was on the road in Sacramento, where he distinguished himself with five innings of one-run ball. A native of Hendersonville, NV, AC was excited to take the mound in front of family and friends at the stadium where he grew up falling in love with baseball, and he did what most pitchers do when the first step on the hill in Las Vegas in the Pacific Coast League, he absorbs a vicious beatdown, yielding five runs on seven hits in four innings.

“Tough deal, Churchmouse,” you might say. “Chalk it off to experience and get back at it tomorrow.”

But Andrew saw it differently. He looked in the mirror, thought about the sad, little backwater that Binghamton could be when school was out, and said to himself, “I can’t go back. I won’t go back.” He walked into his manager’s office and announced his retirement.

I hear you, Andy. Who needs this shit, yo-yo-ing between levels, for chicken-feed pay. Church has a young bride and an infant child he hadn’t seen for months, and chasing the dream wasn’t for him anymore, when he was missing the dream that had come true at home. Best wishes to the Churchman.

Where the opportunity appears is in the bat of Kevin Kaczmarski. In a system lacking outfield bats in the upper levels, Kevo received a big-league Spring Training invitation this year, but then, due either to injury or professional strategy, was held back in the professional limbo of Extended Spring Training, and didn’t have his season launched until mid-May. But man, he did a week in St. Lucie and then hit Las Vegas like a Panzer blitz. KK struck out as a pinch hitter in his first appearance, but in the five games since he has started and hit — and hit and hit — racking up 12 base hits and a pair of walks in five games, waking up this morning with a .529 / .545 / .706 // 1.251 line that is small-sample- and PCL-related, but still boner-inducing. Kacz led off yesterday, going 4-5. In another universe, he might have had a callup by now. But here in our universe, the Mets needed a right-handed bat, and called on Tony Bautista.

Hey, speaking of left-handed outfielders, Matt den Dekker (little d) has been hitting all season long. With power too. His eight homers have helped him to a .300 / .342 / .512 // .854. He too has already been called up in some alternate time lines. He also still looks like a sad angel.

The 51s take on the Reno Aces tonight, with nominal ace Chris Flexen matching up against the always-dangerous TBD, as Las Vegas looks to regroup from their position 10.0 games out in the Pacific Coast League Pacific Southern Division, aka DFL.
