I liked the black uniforms in moderation. But they went overboard, and black became the dominant color -- even screwing up the classic pinstripes. Talking about screwing up. The 1979 Atlanta Braves. The team was caught between two looks. They kept the classic lower-case a cap -- and even road uniform with the feather sleeves from the Aaron record-breaking era. But for the home set, they added red pinstripes and red outlines and stripes around the collar and sleeves. A terrible look. The Blue Jays, after moving the button-downs and the Jay logo off to the side, had one of the best uniforms in the majors. Then they started screwing it up little by little, with bad cap logos of roided-up birds. I actually like those White Sox and Astros uniforms. Definitely not traditional, but not bad designs. (Fun fact, that's not the cap that was supposed to go with those Astros uniforms) Now the Disney-era Angels uniforms. ESPN's Karl Ravitch has been clamoring to shorten all games to seven innings to speed things along. Don't like it.

I don't like using gimmicks to end ballgames, and I don't like ties at all. And I know I'm an outlier, but I don't think the game times are all that bad. It seems like baseball constantly downgrades its product by telling people its games are too long -- especially when some of the length is created by the advertising time between innings and pitching changes. That's especially true in the postseason. I do think there are ways to improve some of the dead time, like when the batter goes wandering off between every pitch, Yadier Molina makes a dozen trips to the mound and the endless throws over to first where they aren't even seriously trying to pick off the runner. I was at a couple Florida State League games in May and they were using the clock between pitches. There were a couple ball calls and the games moved along, but they also didn't have time between innings for TV ads to slow things down. So, a long way of saying I think they should just play regular rules in extra innings. If they want to used the automatic runner in the rare occasion when things go 12 innings or more, I can live with that.

These aren't good processes. Hire baseball people. Hell, have a formal interview process and encourage your top choices to apply. Hire baseball people for baseball jobs. Not every job running a baseball team is a baseball job. Plus, it seems to be working really well.

It's June 1. We have a 34-17 record, tied for most wins in MLB. We have a 10.5-game lead in the division. None of this means we are assured a seat at the table in October, but things are trending in the right direction for sure. Plus, we have a no-hitter, a well-deserved number retirement, Old-Timer's Day and even a glorious Seaver statue. We have at least five players who should merit serious consideration for a trip to the All-Star Game. It is, by just about any measure, a good day in Mets world. Who gets most of the credit here? Buck? A firm, experienced hand at the wheel dismissed by some here as a just a Yankee castoff retread? Did he pick all the coaches? Do they get credit for improvements from Lindor, Pete and McNeil? Billy Eppler, who didn't seem to be anyone's first choice when we were looking for a new GM? Remember all those stories about how no one wanted to work for the Mets? He did a good job of upgrading the roster, even with some of the depth signings. Is it Sandy? I don't think we've heard much from him in a while. Uncle Steve? He's not just offering big contracts. He and his wife have reportedly were hands on in the negations with Max. Boosted up the analytics department. Signed off on removing Cano. Does fan-friendly things. All of the above?

If his uniform number isn't just a big ?, someone is asleep at the switch!
