    My first autograph. My parents took me to "The Dugout," his restaurant in Amityville, and they were selling signed balls in the glass case at the register. Then in the 1980s when we lived in Connecticut, he was active on the card show circuit. I have a Mets book my parents gave me as a birthday gift, and I'd ask players to sign the book. He was at one show with players from the 1962 team and another with players from the 1969 team, and I kept those on separate pages, so he's in the book multiple times. Always very gracious whenever I met him. Gonna be tough for some to break that 1,853 games Mets record! Just seeing that James Earl Jones died, too!

    The guys on the “Meet at the Apple” podcast raised this: If the Mets make the playoffs, is Mendoza the winner of NL Manager of the year? My first reaction was that it was a stretch. But they made an interesting case. The reasoning is that he brought the team back from the abyss and it is surpassing expectations. But then I was thinking, if not Mendy, then who? Any one of us can manage the Dodgers and they'd still be in first. Pat Murphy's Brewers might be a surprise but that division is weak. Torey Lovello? Rob Thomson's Phillies aren't a surprise. What do you think?

    The funny part is that they didn't seem all that hapless when I was there. We all have images of the 1962 Mets bumbling and Richie Ashburn "Yo la Tengo" moments and that might be because that's all we know. But it's not like the Sox seemed all that bad. They must be. But they didn't seem bumbling.
