  1. Lambin: http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/6991235/crash-davis-rides-again He played at Cypress Falls High School in Houston, then Grayson County College in Texas, then the University of Texas, then the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, and the Mets drafted him in the 34th round of the 2002 draft, the 1,017th pick overall. They sent him to the short-season Class A Cyclones in Brooklyn. His signing bonus was a thousand bucks, his salary was $700 a month, and the manager called him "blond-haired guy." He played for the full-season Class A St. Lucie Mets in 2003 and helped them win the Florida State League title. He played second and David Wright played third, and they were both All-Stars. He played for the Double-A Binghamton Mets in 2004. The local paper called him Mr. Clutch. His mother came to visit, and he told her over lunch, I love this. I'll do this for as long as they'll let me. He met the woman who later would become his wife and the mother of his son. He got called up to Triple-A Norfolk in 2005. He homered three times in the first game of a doubleheader, and then went 2-for-4 in the second. He finished the year with a .309 average and 24 home runs. When he was in Class A, he let himself think about maybe making it to Double-A; when he was in Double-A, he let himself think about maybe making it to Triple-A; when he was in Triple-A Keep working, then-Mets manager Willie Randolph told him one day in spring training in 2006, and we'll see you later this year. He hit under .200 that April. http://archives.cranepoolforum.net/1600/f10_t1648.shtml
  2. Not sure where CF's quotes come from. Rubin posted an article about half an hour before the first post in this thread, so that's probably it. http://espn.go.com/new-york/mlb/story/_/id/6958670/new-york-mets-wear-nypd-fdny-hats-9-11-game. Thole was not aware of his predecessors' actions until Sunday afternoon. When he learned about the '01 Mets standing up to MLB, he discussed with deputy player rep Tim Byrdak whether to also violate the league stipulation. Current players had mixed opinions. And Thole said Mets brass instructed them not to violate the MLB policy. "Evidently it's going to come down on the club," Thole said before the Mets lost to the Cubs 10-6 in 11 innings. "I guess they cracked down on it pretty hard. So it's just something we can't do. As a group, we think it's right, and it's the least we can do. We're going to wear them for a ceremony we're having, and then we're going to have to switch hats for the game." Does anyone know what crackdown he is referring to? Mets pitcher R.A. Dickey, in a statement posted on his Twitter page, said he and his teammates had planned to wear the hats anyway, until their plans were foiled. "For all those upset that we didn't wear the hats, I understand your anger. However, they physically took them from us after the ceremony," read the entry on Dickey's page. "We had conspired to wear them but we got found out and MLB got involved."
  3. ...(if another team has a solid shortstop prospect, why aren't they playing him instead of trading for Reyes?). I imagine such a person would be dealt because he isn't yet believed to be ready to consistently perform in the major leagues. Especially for a team with greater expectations than the mean. The Mets believed that about Melvin Mora and gave him up for Bordick. This thread breaks my heart in so many ways. Can we talk about Beltran's called strike three again?
  4. Fucking kidding me.
  5. My hot Kevin Elster avatar went away :-(
  6. Cameron Diaz isn't hot any more.
  7. No problem. Win in 10, one less finished game for Frank.
  8. I actually am enjoying his great season a little less because I don't think he'll be on the team next year. I feel like a greasy WFAN caller.
  9. The Second Spitter wrote: I'm looking forward to seeing it, but more importantly than that dude, we had an epic (by CPF standards) pro-wrestling thread and you missed it. PiazzaFan is back? themetfairy wrote: I really enjoyed it - it was clever and entertaining. It would have been better with someone other than Owen Wilson as the protagonist, but it was a lot of fun nonetheless. He wouldn't have been my first choice either but I thought he was pretty good.
  10. Woody Allen's latest. I have no idea how to describe it without spoilers. I enjoyed it.
  11. David Wright has been everything I could've wanted from a ballplayer on my favorite team since he arrived. As EdgyDC put it long ago "I can't believe he's mine." The jackass owners (are we all agreed that they are at least part-jackass?) built a monstrosity of a ballpark that has had at least some kind of effect, mental or otherwise, on David. And intelligent Met fans are telling David to go fuck himself. I don't get it.

Angel Pagan 309 95. Daniel Murphy 209 T-108. Ike Davis 177 T-153. Jason Bay 112 T-168. Josh Thole 96 (tied with Willie Mays) T-220. Nick Evans 54 227. Ruben Tejada 51t So even with the Krane providing the relatively low ceiling, it's never easy to keep Mets around long enough to get up in Ed's rarefied air...which is why it will break my heart if the two players within hitting distance of Eddie doesn't get a shot at breaking the record. Please add a poll to this thread: First to break the Met hit record. a) Jose Reyes David Wright c) Ike Davis d) MiniKnight
  13. I'm dying over here. Teflon Eddie, "What did Kranepool say", "blink if Ceetar has a gun to your head". I'm not quite as suicidal as I was a few minutes ago.

I wanted to show some other people but apparently I'm the last person on Earth to see this.
  15. This is a really good thread. My online forum life is 99% non-regular lurker these days, but from what I see all this losing seems to be inspiring creative and thoughtful posting. On this board at least.

  17. I think it's because boxing hits a larger international demographic then a baseball or American football movie would. And because of people like me who are a sucker for them. I enjoyed the hell out of this movie, even though the actress who played his mother turned out to be annoying as hell and crazy as a loon. I wish I had abs like Marky's. Vic, have you ever considered a thread on Wahlberg's career?
  18. The Mafia is insulted that you would connect them to MLB.
  19. G-Fafif wrote: The Record says Santana may not/will not pitch in 2011. The bad news is one of the co-bylines is Steve Popper, so it might be true. The good news is the other co-byline is Bob Klapisch's, so it may be nothing more than soft rain. Scary possibility no matter who is doing the reporting, but "soft rain" cracked me up.
  20. The Hall of Fame Pyramid as explained by Gus Ramsey, Gus Ramsey's dad, and Bill Simmons. Jerry Koosman's hat prominently featured. http://gusramsey.blogspot.com/2011/01/baseball-hall-of-fame-pyramid.html
  21. I agree that you shouldn't get involved in a trivia thread if you are going to look up and post the answers. Anyway, one more to go.
  22. You're looking them up? D-bag. No more answers accepted from Zvon. Honorable mention to Rico Brogna in 1995, hitting .289 and leading the team with 22 and 76. Brett Butler beat him hitting .311 over 367 ABs in 90 games, if 350 is an acceptable minimum for at-bats. (Bobby Bonilla hit .325 in 317 ABs (80 games).) One more to go. Edits: Getting the numbers right. Edit: Yes, Zvon you are a doooooosh.
  23. Incomplete answer again? Half credit: 1989 hit .287 with 36 and 101 (6 guys had higher BAs, but all had less than 200 at-bats)
  24. No on Rusty. He was close from 1973-75. 75: first in RBI with 105, second in homers with 19 (Kong - 36), and third among qualifying hitters in batting average at .282 74: first in RBI with 78, second in homers with 19 (Milner - 20), third in BA at .258 73: first in RBI (76), third in HR (15), second in BA at .279 (Millan - .290)
