  2. Edgy DC wrote: That's not an objective comparison to the rest of the guys in the league, so they set a replacement level guy as an fixed value. I understand that. It just makes me very skeptical about the stat (but then, a lot of those stats have similiar assumptions) and how useful it is. But it's Friday afternoon on a holiday weekend. not the time for a sabermetrics debate.
  3. My problems with WAR are the assumptions it makes about the R. Not every replacement level player is likely to perform at replacement level anyway, and it requires actually having those guys that will, and evaluating the backups too. I think R for Pagan should be calculated as Gary Matthews Jr. (I imagine that makes his level even higher?)

  5. Pelf gets a hit. Back above the GMJ line!

What about the Jeter/Rivera doping juice? Speaking of doping juice, (and I'm not dignifying it with a post/link) Murray Chase is hurt that the media didn't lambast Piazza when he was in Citi Field this past weekend about his "so evident if it was a murder charge he'd be convicted" steroid use.
  7. TransMonk wrote: Does it matter that the AL East and the NL West have better average winning percentages? No. Actually, I don't think the NL East is the best division. I think the Nationals and Marlins suck. maybe not extremely, but they suck. (Marlins are an embarassment to baseball, no matter their record). I don't think the Braves are more than average, and the Phillies, well the Phillies suck because they're the phillies. But It's entirely possible no team in the division wins more than 90, so that's not what I would say is 'best'.
  8. He's pretty much hit all the milestones, infield hit, 2SB, home run, triple, multi-hit game..etc. I think he's back. I don't know if he goes on one of his 22/35 tears here, or gets his BA up to .300 off the slow start ,but I think we can expect to see the Reyes we all know and love for the most part. (needs to get some handshakes down too.. ) He may have another cold stretch here and there, but I think that'll just be normal ebb and flow stuff. He seems to have finally caught up to the pace of Major league baseball.
  9. Frayed Knot wrote: Hisanori Takahashi is the first pitcher in NY Mets history to pitch at lest 6 innings of shutout ball in each of his first two ML starts. They list 17 others who have accomplished the same feat although those records appear to be incomplete. No word whether doing so consecutively against the two defending league champions is a first. The only negative is that it hardly has been a sign of forthcoming greatness when it has occurred. It's been done twice each in the last two seasons, for instance, and I either didn't or barely recognized the names and couldn't have named the teams these four most recent guys: In 2009 it was Ryan Sadowski (SF) & Vin Mazzarro (Oak). In 2008, Scott Lewis (Cle) & James Parr (Atl) Difference with Takahashi is he's not a rookie really. (Actually, I've been sorta monitoring Ike vs. Heyward, but if Takahashi's going to throw 130 scoreless innings as a starter, he's gotta be in the running!)
  10. Victorino, Francisco (hitting like GMJ), Valdez and Schneider. Those four aren't exactly making up a "scary world beating" Phillies lineup. I caught Jody Macdonald saying the Phillies top 6 (ignore that back crap right?) is light years better than the Mets top 6, and would cause the Phillies to run away with the division. I'm not sure they're even just 'better'.
  11. I heard somewhere, I think in WFAN pregame, that Mejia is learning English with the help of Family Guy. as recommended by one of his teammates.
  12. I don't know whether to laugh or cry. The Nieve stuff is priceless.
  13. The guy swings so hard and violently in the on-deck circle I'm afraid he's going to affect the wind patterns.
  14. Manuel and Warthen seem to forget that pitches thrown in the bullpen still tire your arm. Sometimes it seems like they literally get Feliciano and Nieve at least warming up in every game. They had Frankie warming up for nearly 10 innings straight in the 20 innings game. And then there was the Phillies-Santana game, where they didn't bother having anyone warm up and just brought (Takahashi i think) in after 4 warmup pitches. Sometimes it seems that Manuel's never comfortable with the reliever he chooses and always wants to have another option. Or maybe it's just he's always planning out matchups coming up? If this guy gets on, I'll bring in the lefty for Howard, but if not, I'll leave him in let him face Werth. But what if Howard gets on? Maybe I should get a righty up too in case i want to bring a guy in for Werth. If he mows them all down, I need a pinch hitter in the bottom of the inning, so I better get a different guy up to throw the next inning..
  15. Hopefully the periodic recession lasts through the week. That's what happens when you have a mainly offensive (two meanings to that one) ballclub, and it's why the 93 wins from last season is probably their ceiling and why they definitely won't run away with the division and can be caught. Especially since the Mets play them 12 times from August 4th-EOS (hey, we may even have Beltran back by then!)
