I live right here by Port Jeff, and I'm pretty sure we don't have any baseball here, unless you count the Ducks, but they're at least a half hour's drive. Plenty of places to find cake, though. I'm getting married in Miller Place, the 'cake' would be Wedding cake to decide on. and I don't like crab, so the cuisine in Baltimore isn't as appealing. I'd prefer baltimore I think, although competing with Jersey Shore traffic going south doesn't sound overly fun either.
  2. So, Mets are in Baltimore on June 12th and I've never been. (That's 6 consecutive against NY. Think they'll be sick of it?) But it's far. Fiance has confessed interest in seeing the Bisons. Also far (I went to school in Buffalo, have friends there, which changes things). Majors over minors? Minors probably being a lot cheaper and also probably factors in awesome wings. Actually, definitely factors them in, that's pretty much a given. Baltimore also offers the opportunity to maybe go to the Smithsonian or something on the way home, which is something we were thinking of doing earlier in the season and seeing the Nats, but didn't. I'm torn. It's probably 50/50 we wimp out and do nothing but stay home. Or drive to Port Jeff and taste cake, but that's a pain of a drive too.

  4. Hmm...What is the Marlins benefit in this? Does Marlins in the All Star game draw them more fans, or does it actually cost them more money in negotiations with their arbitration eligable players due to a perceived value increase due to the All-Star selection? Because if the second, you'd think they'd be encouraging you to vote for the Mets or something.
  5. Ashie62 wrote: Pelfrey has to be on the AS team I'm guessing Wright wins the vote at the wire. That really depends on the Mets record.
  6. Most of my early memories are randomly disjointed and I haven't gone to the records to try to place any of them specifically. Two from at games. My father followed in the wake of a huge group that had handed a bunch of tickets to the ticket-taker, thereby insuring that my first ticket stub was not a stub, but a whole ticket. I know my parents have it in an album somewhere. This was probably 87-88ish, but I feel like it was before '86. The other at the game moment I remember is my father being annoyed with the Mets losing fairly succinctly, and we were leaving early (last time I 'voluntarily' left early) but on our way down the ramp Strawberry hit a grand slam and we went back. on TV, the extra inning Astro's game in the NLCS. I was semi-annoyed that I couldn't have the tv to watch cartoons because the game went long. I remember being disappointed I was missing Danger Mouse, but I also don't recall expecting or even wanting to switch the station either.

I bemoan only it's handling. I'm sorta here. But you couldn't have used another surer-thing starter? I was advocating for a 'surer-thing' starter with Niese likely replacing the injury guy. (probably Maine. was Maine. big surprise, but was also Niese.) I'm not so sure that Takahashi wasn't always that though. Misch too. Maybe even Mejia may have been considered a possibility for an injury replacement in June or July after he'd had the 2-3 months in AA like he was planned for.
  9. Edgy DC wrote: I think he's being prepared for a super-sub role, and he may see time here, or maybe there, but where he gets in isn't necessarily personal. None of us know how well he's going to be able to do at second, or how much opporutnity he'll get. It's all so pre-emptive. Murphy got into 155 games last season (tops on the team, even more than Feliciano). He has twice been given starting jobs at positions that he played little of in the minors. He was inserted into the lineup at one of those positions in the midst of a pennat race after coming up from AA. All this has happened under Manuel. Given a chance to take some at-bats away from Murphy against lefties, Manuel publickly stated that he'd rather take them away from Ryan Church, because Murphy was too good a young player to get tracked into a platoon role. Jerry Manuel disappoints me on a near-daily basis, yet I can't see a doodle of this evidence that he's got a problem with Murphy. Well, we know Church is basically the anti-christ based on stepping a few inches to the left of where he should've, so Murphy always would look good by comparison. Maybe it was the basic platoon with a washed up pathetic DH in LF weeks before Manuel said Murphy is not a LF and he doesn't know if he can play 1B, followed by saying he'd have to play him there for a while to get him used to it, and thenplaying him I think it was twice, before giving him a 'rest'. or playing Tatis who at the time was averaging more outs than PA. And then using Murphy as a PH against lefties anyway. So if Murphy gets a couple of weeks at 2B and is deemed fit by the rest of the Mets oragnization, what would Manuel do? Because based on the way he does things, I'm not so sure he _would_ play Murphy. But I guess what we really need to know is if he plays second, does he bat second, and if plays third oen day, does he b at fifth?
  10. Edgy DC wrote: But we're in an entirely speculative realm here. We have no idea how excited Omar Minaya is to get Murphy in at second, or if he's more or less-so than Manuel. I guess it's speculation, although it does seem widely reported that they're going with the super-sub type role for him. And he played 2B last night. And the other positions are pretty well nailed down. Guess they could be just doing it to raise his overall value as a utility guy for a possible trade. who really knows what the overall plan is with him.
  11. Edgy DC wrote: That wouldn't strike me as particularly personal, but rather partiality to middle infielders with experience as middle infielders Still represents a disconnect between Omar and Manuel. If the Mets 'plan' with Murphy is a utility guy and specifically 2B given what he's doing right now, and they put him on the Mets roster in that role, and Manuel chooses not to use him, or to use him differently?
  12. I think players in general don't buy into a lot of the media hype/storylines around baseball. Like the doctor issue. Sure, the Mets had issues last year, but that didn't stop pitchers coming halfway across the country to have surgery with our guys, at the recommendation of former Yankees. (That was Nathan by referral of Pavano, btw) Make a situation attractive, whether it's money, or contention, or money, or whetever, and players will go wherever.
  13. Edgy DC wrote: That's nauseating. This whole thing is so aswirl in opininon stated as fact. Isn't most things regarding the Mets these days? And poorly researched. i'm still waiting for the article that talks about the sports pscyhatrist, compares Perez to Pelfrey, and predicts Perez going to him and coming back and going 10-1 down the stretch. You don't see a lot mentioning Warthen changing Perez's mechanics this offseason/Spring and how it may affect his velocity, or how he did the same with Maine who after blowing him off threw 3 Quality Starts. Where's the reporter-science telling how how Perez's surgery would have affected his velocity? I'm sure we could get some pitcher turned talking head to mimic a delivery in some studio and indicate something right? In fact, almost everything is reported as "get Perez out of here" and "how he's hurting the team." and "how it's best for the Mets if he's in Buffalo." funny, I thought it'd be best for the Mets if he performed like he did in '07-'08 like he was signed to do.
  14. Frayed Knot wrote: Maybe Daniel Murphy keeps Cora from vesting? (Doubtful, giving Jerry's feelings about the two of them) Should I ask what Jerry's feelings for Cora & Murphy are and where/how those were made known or is the answer going to confuse me more than if I let it slide? You should probably let it slide, because you're not going to take my observations seriously. But it's my opinion that Jerry wouldn't play Murphy over Cora very often unless Murphy really forced the issue with some power numbers, which isn't out of the question either.
  15. Infield does seem to be more Murphy's speed, although i wouldn't be opposed to the occasional OF stint if it created roster flexibility elsewhere. I think he'll be fine at second, if not above average like he seemed at first. The one thing I'd say is that second is a lot more passive than the corners, and Murphy is a very aggressive guy.
  16. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: He's on pace for about 95 now, and Castillo's circling the DL drain. attgig wrote: interesting. someone mentioned cot's said it was 80 starts for cora. Now cot's is showing 80 games. I'd imagine that one of the chattees-- or Adam himself-- emailed the site to inquire. Depends who you ask, if Castillo's circling the DL drain. (what, not everyone's on the same page? shocker) Maybe Daniel Murphy keeps Cora from vesting? (Doubtful, giving Jerry's feelings about the two of them)
  17. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: So... instead of it vesting with 80 starts-- a dumb vesting option, running counter to one's team interests-- the Cora deal was, in essence, a two-year contract for $4 million. That depends on if Jerry is using him how Omar intended/expected. He's not exactly the most awesome of pinch hitters, so if he got the 25 or so starts this year that Castillo didn't, plus pinch hit in a third of the other games (as roughly the third choice off the bench) that still would leave him a decent amount short of 80, even factoring in a couple of extra-long games in which everyone gets in and what not. The real issue here is that Castillo says he can play through the injury, and Jerry disagrees and _starts_ Cora 30% or more of the games, practically vesting his option that way.

He's scheduled to make his last minor-league start this Thursday at Coke Field against your Buffalo Buffalo. wish I could take time off. I'm considering a Bisons visit for June 12th (but may get trumped by visiting Camden Yards instead. Interesting, btw, that the Orioles are playing the Yankees June 10th, and the Mets june 11th. You could concievably go down there, root for the Orioles on Thursday and against them Friday)
  19. Might be time to unfollow that one on Twitter. What do i really need multiple beat reporters for anyway, particularly bad ones?
  20. Well supposedly all he has to do is hang out in sunny Florida, but I still don't know if the Mets guarenteed a return. Just like spring training means nothing, neither does extended spring training. It doesn't matter if the anonymous whiners have "the teams best interest" in mind. If that's the case, why aren't they advocating the release of Gary Matthews, or the firing of Jerry Manuel. Cause they like them better as a person? Players don't decide what's best for the team. And I still doubt it went down like that. I think most major league players would think Perez would be just fine. Just like they never believe they themselves could possibly fail, they don't think their teammates can either. They always have the talent and ability to win. err..what' is "nuanced reporting?" and why does what Steve Trachsel did a decade ago have any real relevance on Ollie? I'm sure I could give you dozens of examples where a guy struggled in the rotation, went to the bullpen or had a skipped start and found himself in the rotation again. Didn't Carlos Zambrano already go Rotation->Bullpen->Rotation this year?
  21. seawolf17 wrote: I agree with duan. Good Ollie is so damn good when he's on. He just needs to find a way to harness that. I'm not ready to give up on him yet either; it just seems right now like all the Mets are doing is setting him up to fail. I suspect this as well, but I don't really know. none of us do. Could the not having one decision maker be causing half the problem here? As Duan said, Omar needs to present a plan that benefits both parties, as win-win. One that involves a set date of recall so it's more a rehab versus demotion situation. But Omar doesn't apparently have final authority on this. As for the anon players, if they really said those things that way, that's bad, mainly because they didn't say it to Perez first. It's just whiny and pathetic really. Stop snitching to the media. So much for this 'awesome' clubhouse they had right?
  22. As I understand it, you can't "guarantee" that you'll get a call up again right? So the Mets can say "we'll call Perez back up in 3 starts" and then just not. I wonder if they could guarantee it, contractually, if Boras would okay it knowing Perez won't likely get a ton of innings up in the majors in those weeks. I also wonder if the Mets are too scared of Boras to 'fake' a DL stint, which would basically force them to have to call him back up after a set time. They faked an injury with Maine (They did eventually find something, but when the DLd him it was just based on guesses and thoughts.). This really seems like the best and easiest option, lets Perez save face, gets him some reps in, and allows the Mets a couple more starts out of him to evaluate arm angle and mechanics and what not without hurting the team.) And Perez is still more valuable on this team than Gary Matthews Jr.
  23. I know I'm in the minority on this, and I've hashed it out elsewhere, but I don't believe 8 starts and sporadic relief appearances are enough to declare Ollie worthless and needing release. Especially after more than a year lay off since pitching healthily. I also think there have been better opportunities to at least sorta get Perez in there than Manuel has done. I think the Mets had a better chance on Saturday with Perez starting and Nieve relieving than vice-versa. I find it hard to believe major league players made those comments about a teammate, exactly like that. Again, my issue is with the long term plan the Mets seem to not have. If they're simply telling Perez "Get lost. go to the minors." I wouldn't have gone either. Now, if they're telling him "Go to the minors. Work on building your arm strength. We love our pitching coach down there, he'll help you. We'll see you in three weeks, work on your first pitch strikes." Or something along those lines. Really, I just hope they're framing it as a rehabilitation type thing as opposed to a demotion/release. Because fixing Perez back towards '07-'08 numbers is much more helpful than releasing him or promoting a scrub, and even if they found someone to sign/trade for, chances are Perez could put up better numbers long term than we can hope for out of Dickey, small sample-size aside. (And don't tell me he's unfixable. If you're a pitching coach, and you don't know what to do, you have no place on a major league team. If your boss, in any field, told you to do something and you said "I can't get that done." would he accept that?)

Chad Ochoseis wrote: Pagan is about 10 runs above a "replacement-level" player [nitpick]Actually, at least on BBRef, it's 10 runs above an average defensive player; the replacement level adjustment is made at the end.[/nitpick] I haven't seen much non-Met related baseball this year, but Pagan certainly looks like a reasonable All-Star candidate. Best defensive player in the majors and fourth best overall player in the NL? Maybe a bit of a stretch. But a fine player this year, no question. He's 8-for-11 in steal attempts (a stellar 73 percent). Without looking at the actual stats, this is something that I think the Mets have been really good at this year - stealing a lot of bases without getting caught. Bay is something like 7 for 7, no? And they're doing it without Beltran, who is the master of this skill. And Pagan would be 9/11 if not for the foot of Valdez. I don't think the Mets are stealing signs, but they are getting very good reads on opponents. They always have in terms of SB though. What was with Ibanez's silly steal attempt last night? that was fun.
