Frenchy is below his career average (which is talent, really..geeze) But we're not talking about a position that was manned by Strawberry. Castillo is having a subpar year, and has been benched, again, despite being the best option. Barajas was a black hole after a while, but hardly worse than Schneider/Santos last year. Castro as a backup gave us a little more in '07/'08, but still. I'm not saying that across the board pretty much everyone is having subpar years, or at best 'par' years as compared to the offense, that was good, on this team in prior years.

John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: And I don't know why the media continues to paint the Mets' offensive woes as if it was some kind of mystery: It was well-known before the year ever began that they'd be challenged at 4 positions (RF, 2B, 1B, C) potentially, and sure enough they were. Add to it Bay's lost year and Beltran's struggles and its no mystery at all. Nah. For one, this team has been near the top in various offensive categories for years, without much turnover. Last year they even had a really high .AVG. I expected at least this out of 1B, and much much more out of 2B (and if we weren't playing a minor leaguer there, voluntarily, we would get more out of it). I expected a wee bit more out of c, Which was pretty much a disaster last three years. No, I don't see any reason the offense should be this bad. I know Manuel gives away outs with bunts and does inane things, but they should be able to overcome that. It shouldn't be as huge a deal as it is. You can go on and on about "What's Manuel supposed to do?" and "Hitting coaches really don't do much" But neither of them are getting the results they're paid to do or should be expected. It all starts there, on the field. Maximizing the value we have, instead of minimizing it.

  5. Any truth to the rumor that the Mets called for rain so they could help limit Niese's innings?

I usually walk around craving grilled cheese sandwiches, not booze. Bit of both wouldn't be bad right now. mmm...Grilled Cheese... doh, I don't have any bread. Pizza it is. basically the same thing.

The lessons here being that the NFL keeps its product a lot purer than MLB, and refuses to be corrupted by corporate dollars... unless the league is in direct control of those agreements. I think we're going to see more things like this, not specifically to baseball, but just in general. Advertising is shifting. Certainly this is more interesting than a generic Captain Morgan banner on the outfield wall or their name stamped on the back of my program.

Just cause MLB does it does not mean its the proper thing to do. For the right amount of $$ MLB will do anything, it seems. This is one of the things that's wrong with the game today, IMO. No, that boozeclown should not be throwing out first pitches. I'll proudly smell like an old fart right along with you Edgy. (for the most part I enjoy the commercials and the liquor) When was the last time the first pitch was treated as solely and honor and not a promotion? Jersey Shore cast? American Idol winners? Owners of key advertisers? All selling something. when was the last time "The Mets/Aramark's employee of the month" threw it out?

  11. As long as we're piling on, I dislike his blog name.
  12. My brain says SmaSamSz-- I mean, after 114 PAs or so, Murphy looked like our starting LFer, no?-- but my gut says that it's got to be an approach thing. (Well, either that, or that I shouldn't have had tuna for breakfast.) Funny you should mention Murphy. I thought about him earlier in the week and looked up some numbers in baseball-reference. They show that Ike really hasn't given the team more than a healthy Dan Murphy would have. Davis: .320/.423/.744 Murphy (career): .331/ .437/ .768 In fact, less. Later I would've bet on Murphy having a better year than Davis. Davis has the advantage defensively though. And all the 'intangible' "He looks like a ballplayer" stats point to him being better right? He hit more home runs too. farther.
  13. Now now, in 2012 the Mets will be coming off a World Series championship. They'll be doing some tinkering for sure, but they may ultimately decide that they don't need to buy him out and can add the pieces without doing so to repeat as champions.
  14. metirish wrote: Some good stuff in there ..... what about this? The Mets, bereft of roster depth, sold their rule 5 pick, Carlos Monasterios, to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Didn't the Mets then 'buy' a pick from the Dodgers? I don't recall specifically.
  15. I love that shirt. There is _zero_ reason why this shouldn't be sold in Mets Clubhouse shops. someone email jeff. mailto:jwilpon@nymets.com

I think the last pitch he threw was supposedly 103. The last pitch of the 11th is listed on gameday as 103. 3" break, 11" pfx. was on the outside edge of the plate, swinging K. Yeah, he was pretty consistent. the first batter of each Inning was a little slower. He through 6 pitches to the final batter, Castro, all at least 100.
