I'm looking forward to the 2005-2006 Beltranesque resurgence season from Bay next year. (And while we're at it, from Beltran too) He's pretty much been bad, and if he were continue to do so, I won't like him much, but right now I like the guy. He plays hard, runs hard, and seems like a decent guy that's easy to get along with (clubhouse presence ftw?) I think he'd fit in very very well with this team when it's playing like it should. After seeing him play I _do_ think that Bay was the better option over Holliday the way the Mets evaluated him. The concussion sucks. Hopefully it's one of those minor blips and his struggles got jostled along with his brain. Hopefully the Mets learn to give brain tests for just about everything and stop flying guys with concussions. Better yet, hopefully nobody gets any concussions next year.

John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Last night reminded me that while Mets pitching has been quite good this year, they seem to issue an extraordinary amount of runs after 2 outs, nobody on, at least as a percentage of their total runs allowed. Who can figure this one out? My guess would be they are the worst in the league at this. I've seemingly noticed that too. Johan used to (and probably still does, to a lesser extent) excel at this. Dickey's also very very good at it, but that's partially the nature of the knucklerball to put guys on and then get out of it. Could we boil it down to pressure/pressing, or is that too esoteric? Pelfrey went through the first half of the season without allowing an unearned run, and now suddenly the defense has come apart.
  3. Will keep reminding because I don't want anybody to slap a forehead afterward: 7 PM, Tuesday night, SNY, Mets Yearbook: 1973. Good. my DVr sucks and won't let me record the "season" so I haev to record individually and never remember. Probably better off watching this than the actual game.

Some would say that you could ruin the kids confidence by having him flail around at quality pitching and batting .150. It's getting to the point where you kinda wish we'd kept Raul Valdes around so we could pinch hit for Tejada with him.
  5. What elseis Castillo supposed to think really? The team seemingly has tried to trade him every offseason and every trade deadline. The fans rail against him at every chance, despite the only real sin he's committed is a dropped pop-up against the evil empire, which is bad, but they hated him before that. He's been benched for a rookie that can't hit, who while might be his superior defensively, is nto without his defensive flaws. He certainly can't feel wanted and welcome. He was OPSing .890 in August before the decision to sit him was made. The team has subtly given up. I'm not sure they were ever serious about _really_ trying to compete this season anyway. Fernando Martinez is another one. I think there were better temporary options in that regard too. Personally, I never hated the contract. I figured 6million wasn't too much to shuffle away in the 4th year if he did indeed decline to uselessness. He was healthy last year, tripping down the stairs not withstanding, and it's not his knees or legs this year that hurt him, but a fluke bone bruise on his foot. I get that he's not a powerful guy, but I just don't get why people really hate him and want/wanted him gone in favor of guys like Ruben Gotay, Argenis Reyes, etc.
  6. Edgy DC wrote: I don't believe that last part for a minute. And it just perpetuates the kowtowing to allow these guys to spread the myth that the ninth-inning save situation makes them better pitchers. Putz was dealing with an injury. And then Jerry started pitching him three days in four until his arm failed him. And then he did the same thing seven other guys. Do the numbers support it? (I'm at work, not going to do some in depth research right now) I know Mariano's worst opponent OPS is in tie situations, significantly. However, you do get a lot of IBBs in tie games on the road to set up double plays or matchups and the like, so maybe that's not the best stat to use. Wagner always seemed more ineffective in non-saves, and has bitched about it. Frankie actually seems to be better though, less base runners, to my recent perception anyway.
  7. Also there seems to be a little bit of a safety net built in. Starters, even if it's subconsciously, start thinking 8IP is okay. Then they start thinking 7 is okay if they've got a good bullpen. It's no longer about keeping your best pitchers in until they're legitimately tired or struggling. And the cycle continues because if you only throw 100 pitches for a month, you _will_ be tired when you reach that point again. It's funny how we treat relievers as being 'overworked' when they approach 80 innings, yet that's less than half of what most starters throw. I'm not sure you can get away from egos and one pitcher making a lot more and all that. It's sorta the nature of competition and what not, but on the other hand, you perpetuate it by continuing along these lines, and it makes it harder to bring in someone different if it's a save situation. Look at closers in non-saves, Putz in the 8th, even Mariano struggles in tie games. (who, btw, was a big part of those 4 championships but hardly the defining part. Even were some team to find one, it doesn't guarantee anything and I'd be willing to bet the Yankees probably win those 4 if they had a guy more like Frankie or Wagner) Is this a result of their egos being bruised, however slightly, by being forced to pitch outside of their narrow little box?
  8. My fiance dislikes K-Rod. She always cringes and complains when Manuel brings him in. (I'm doing a good job here. When we first started dating she problem didn't even know what a closer was. Now she recognizes new faces on the team, says things like "Wigginton? He used to be a Met right?) Still, I do think that the 9th inning is the place for the best reliever, and I do believe Frankie is that. My biggest complaint is the tendency to manage to the rule, such as not bringing him in in the 8th the other day, or pulling a starter, or even an effective reliever, for him. Parnell pitches a 1-2-3 8th in 11 pitches I'd leave him in. He's overpaid, surely, but he is one of the few guys that will be consistently good. This isn't like giving a three year deal to Schoeneweis, or other middling relievers. You're really paying more to have the one, solid, pitcher that you can trust out of the bullpen. At least Frankie's a guy that likes to pitch, doesn't mind throwing every day, and wouldn't be unhappy or ineffective with 80+ innings were someone so bold to use him that way.

If words were hits, this guy'd be the MVP. I've never heard of such a crappy player that yapped as much as Frenchy. Being on the bench just gives him _more_ time to run his mouth.

I can't see that Frankie was just pissed off for no reason and stormed into the family area and asked his wife to get her father and just started beating on him without instigation. What. The. Fuck. Listen to Beltran. "No one should act like that. It doesn't matter if the team did whatever it did. No one should act like that." not condoning/judging. I'm just nosy at this point.

I never understand folks dropping three figures on a replica jersey of a big acquisition who hasn't done anything for their team yet. If you've got the money I guess. Could buy it second-hand on the internet too. Frankie's not quite a new acquisition though, He's been here long enough to be a contributing factor.. The could of Bay jerseys out there though..

Probably. Unless they make up. If not, a suit, custody, etc. Gonna get messy.

Sean Green's rehab time is over but the Mets are keeping him at Buffalo (as he had an option). Another victim of the Mets refusing to cut Oliver Perez. Rod Barajas with a home run for the Gulf Coast Mets. I wonder if they keep Frankie on the restricted list one more day and send Iggy back down for Misch?
  16. Another difference between the Mets and the Yankees...Yanks would already have Chico's Bail Bonds sponsoring the 9th inning or something.

My Manuel dislike has been around so long, I'll miss it like a phantom limb once he is finally dismissed. That said, this is a really fucking silly thing to say. When a guy has a bad day at the office, then goes home and hits his wife, they don't charge his boss with accessory-to-being-an-asshole. Fan got hit by a bat sued Ramon Castro for handing it to Castillo. It was silly. I don't really care about the story. K-Rod's a hot head. Someone bail him out so he can pitch today.

You're right, I had forgotten about the required token minority interviews. What a farce. I know it's impossible to do anything in secret these days, but couldn't they interview people before actually firing Jerry? Reporters will speculate, but if only Omar/Jeff knows why say Bobby Valentine was in Citi Field..especially if they timed it for an ESPN game..

Edgy DC wrote: To me the best parallel is Yogi Berra. His team needed disciplining and he lacked the juice and support from management to bring the hammer down on them, so he had become emasculated to the point of being a ghost in his own clubhouse. I get the idea nobody's captaining this ship right now. I'd love for them to use this as an excuse to get the uniform off of Rodriguez's back and quickly, but I don't see a scenario where that happens. I don't see a scenario either. I'm not sure I'd want to. The silliness of a closer aside, he's still one of the better relievers, and I don't quite believe the Mets have no money for a SP/2B/relievers next year.
