Well, they did make an overture to him during the 2011 season and he rebuffed them, saying he wanted to try free agency. I don't blame him for that, nor would I boo him for that, but if Jose really wanted to stay, he'd still be here. It's not like they were dark. Sandy talked to him the day before. It didn't work out, it's business. Pujols didn't stay with the Cardinals either, despite being the most popular person in the entire city and helping them make the playoffs (And make enough money by doing so to basically pay his salary for a year or two) But I'm not going to cheer for Jose based on his business negotiations. I don't root for the Mets because or in spite of the Wilpons.

  4. Maybe if Oliver Perez returns?
  5. Edgy DC wrote: It would be pretty funny --- in theory, anyhow --- if a team welcomed back a player by playing a montage of his most embarrassing, disappointing, and disgraceful moments while wearing the uniform. Falls to close to the 'lolmets' meme for me. But if they want to play a video montage of Chipper Jones errors or striking out in key spots (and yes, there are plenty of those too) that'd be cool. I don't want a Wainwright clip when Beltran returns, but I'd welcome a bases loaded walk clip for Rick Ankiel.
  6. TransMonk wrote: It will be interesting to see if they do the same for Beltran when the Cardinals visit on June 1st... I think they will. I mean, they better. There is a case to be made for retiring his number even, so to not honor him.. Plenty of people are going to the game because Reyes is returning, clearly Reyes is one of the best Mets ever, and clearly he meant a lot to the fans and the team. It has nothing to do with how he left or why he left or how seriously the Mets did or did not persue him. I'm torn on going. I wasn't going to, then I was. I kinda think they/we should clap/cheer/Jose until he gets on base for the first time. That's sorta how it went with Piazza, he was cheered until his AB actually mattered (big lead for the first two homers)
  7. Gee 3.0 Davis 2.5 Bay 1.5 Tejada 0.5 Wright 0.5
  8. Pelfrey - 3.0 Davis - 2.0 Wright - 1.0 Duda - 1.0

  10. Edgy DC wrote: The same Philly team who couldn't touch Met starting pitching got five runs in six innings against Tim Lincecum. It's a 5-2 lead in the middle of six with Halladay on the mound. Lincecum is throwing 90-91. That can't be good. as long as it takes him one more start to figure it out..

(i wish hte mets would bring back the racing stripes. they were the cats' pajamas) I think this is what I'm trying to say. The desire to stick to some sort of "baseball players wear classic white pinstripes with no dropshadow" logic seems to prevent them from doing something like that. That sounds cool. I would indeed want it. The push towards the "no black" seems to run parallel to a lack of change/imagination, and that's where I'm lost. I want to see them do stuff like that, or the Giants throwbacks with the giant NY, or just generally feel free to get creative.

I'll admit my tastes are generally minority ones though. It's easy. I mean, do you wear a lot of bathrobes to memorial services? Well no, but I wouldn't be offended by someone doing so. I also don't get why tying a piece of cloth around my neck means I'm "fancy". I really don't get social convention or "This is just how we do it" arguments. Maybe that's just where I'm missing one or two of my screws, but as it pertains to an entertainment product, how I enjoy and like to see the Mets isn't wrong for being different than anyone elses. There's no right way to be a fan after all, it's a personal thing.

Sometimes steps forward are good things. instant replay, wild cards, robot umps, sabermetrics are all good changes in my opinion. I like how the road uniform looks, I'm mostly indifferent to the home changes. I didn't dislike the black. I'd rather they introduce more combinations. I though Mercury Mets was sorta interesting.
  15. the next t-shirt Tuesday.
  16. I failed in my offseason quest to set up my own database. oops.

  18. Well, it's his job. shouldn't he 'try too hard'?
  19. When's this guy's contract up? Mets should get him. 20. Wright's not on pace to pass Strawberry in Ks.
  21. the home run apple is a black box and invisible normally. This is a light colored monstrosity in the field of vision. I'm only saying it because it became a concern during the exhibition games. It seems like it ultimately wasn't an issue, but it was brought up by a couple of hitters.
  22. Think this trial finishes up before the 2013 Hall of Fame vote?
  23. They probably didn't tell the designer where the monstrosity would be going, so he figured against a wall since it'd be beyond the wall. They didn't even consider if it would be distracting to batters when placing it though, so clearly not a lot of thought went into it.
  24. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: In retrospect it might have been a good idea to yank Pelfrey before he bunted into a DP the inning prior. Not 4 nothing but what irritates me most about Pelfrey isn't his the struggles to put guys away, necessarily, but the fact that he hardly ever helps himself by hitting, bunting, fielding, holding gfuys on, etc etc etc. That DP was a big mo killer! indeed. a Wright pickoff too. Think there was something else sloppy in failure toget insurance hits/runs. Pelfrey has seemingly gotten better with his pickoff move, and hey, he had a double last start. But yeah, that bunt was bad. This stuff bothers me more than pitch counts. Being able to actually square up a ball for a pitcher and hit it hard can be such a huge advantage. I know it's not "easy" easy, but a couple more swings in the cage a week goes a long way.
  25. you're right, it was the fourth he was laboring, not the 5th. (and he didn't have problems in the 6th but then I'm not sure _I'd_ have trouble with those guys) Victorino, Rollins and Pence are the actual hitters there, coming up for the 4th time. Pelfrey all in all pitched pretty well, grounders and settled in. Pitchers get lifted way to early in general when they seem to 'settle in' late in games. But Ramon Ramirez didn't even really pitch that badly. got victimized by some blooping and some bad jumps by outfielders. And the wild pitch/passed ball. Manny Acosta on the other hand.. There's something to be said for treating 1-run deficits like 1-run leads, especially when an offense as good as the Mets have. Bring in Rauch there.
