  1. I feel like I ate at a crappy diner in Fishkill maybe 10 years ago on a trip upstate.
  2. This may need to be split, but I was thinking about Harper during our most recent series with the Nats last week. He is having a great year statistically and seems like the odds on favorite to win the NL MVP going away, but nearly every time I have seen him up in a BIG spot for the Nats in a close game this season (and granted, the number of Nats games I've seen this season is tiny when compared to Mets games), he does not come through. I had to look up his 2015 close/late splits: 92 PA, 71 AB, 14 H, 4 2B, 3 HR, 8 RBI, 20 BB, 25 K, .197/.380/.380/.761 (one of those three HRs was last his second of the game last Wednesday vs. the Mets). He's got the big conventional numbers hands down, but splits like this matter to me when I determine a player's value to a team, especially when that team under-performs and misses the post-season (potentially). his WPA is way up there though.(win probability added)
  3. I think I'm mixing up MVP candidate discussion here. Oh the bounty. The Riches!

What about 3. General character, disposition, loyalty and effort. Value is probably most of it, and in practicality, all of it. That third paragraph might, might, just might be used to separate players that are otherwise statistically inseparable . You're not saying that Granderson's good-guyness might get him this year's MVP, or in the top 10? Are you? I'm not a voter (unless you count the IBWAA, which you don't) so it doens't matter. My point was that it's highly subjective. And probably intentionally so. Carlos Beltran in 2005 finished 12th in MVP voting. (granted, 90 games) in 2008 CC Sabathia pitched 17 games, half a season, and was 4th. Matt Holliday in 2009 got 16th place for 63 games with the Cardinals. Hanley Ramirez in 86 games with the Dodgers in 2013 finished 8th So there's plenty of precedent for these guys getting votes, if not #1 votes. Unless he goes completely cold, I can almost guarantee he'll get some votes somewhere.

His line was .244 / .275 / .549, with 25 runs scored and 33 rbi. But Strawberry had a stretch in 1990 that beats Cespedes. From June 8 to July 25 (41 games), his line was .336 / .421 / .718 // 1.139, with 17 home runs, 34 runs scored, and 42 rbi. The Mets went 30-11, and went from 9 1/2 games behind the Pirates to 1/2 game back. That doesn't have the neat storyline of what Cespedes has done, but it's pretty stunning. Where'd you pull that from?
  7. Farmer Ted wrote: Does anyone remember the Mets getting no-hit by the Giants and some no-name triple-A hack named Heston on June 9? Me neither. hard not to as I was there.
  8. Edgy MD wrote: Since the deal, Cespedes has produced at a level that has no parallel in the teams 53-year history. In 41 games for the Mets, he has 17 home runs and 42 runs batted in, along with a .309 batting average. Just for the sake of discussion, is it really true that this has no parallel? Is it really true that his quarter-season of .309 / .356 / .691 // 1.048 is unprecedented? I mean, it's probably unprecedented as far as dovetailing perfectly and magically and out-of-the-blue with a Mets stretch run, but surely Piazza or Beltran or Duda or Strawberry or McReynolds or Segui or somebody has had a similar month and a half somewhere, right? I can't find a play-index to answer that question. bah! Another time I wish I had my own DB.

The head says Pittsburgh is the more dangerous team for the Mets in a hypothetical NLCS matchup, and I'd rather that the Pirates get stuck (and possibly eliminated) in the Wild Card game. just for varieties sake I don't want it to be the Cardinals after we dispatch the Dodgers.
  10. Edgy MD wrote: By the way, if anyone wants to check my work, please do. That's a lot of games, and a lot of chances for error. Plus there are ties in there. I know, and I posted earlier in this thread, that 95 wins this season gets them even through '69. They were 6-11 through game on on 4/27/69 so the Mets would need to make up 5 more games. They have 18. so 12-7, which puts them at 95 wins. (wow, that's not really that unrealistic) so seems to check out. edit: except I can't add. 12-6, which would put them one past. I still think your math is right though, I was just rounding up when I did the math. Does that put them even back to 9/7/68?
  11. Benjamin Grimm wrote: So it would be quite a gamble. The $500 might be okay if you're going to go to ten games but if it's just one game, that's a different story. But I wonder if anyone is pondering this strategy? Not in the day and age of StubHub. But.. if you're really ambitious, the pricing on tickets for plan holders is good because it includes a 10% discount and less fees than you get on single game seats unless you buy at the stadium. It wouldn't be that hard to resell them. (which is going to happen, scalpers WILL be doing this. means more volume for us on the secondary market next year) you're better off going $250 deposit for 20 games though, unless you actually plan to live at Citi next year. You don't get all the postseason games, but you'll get there, and $250 could cover all, or most, of your plan and it's much less work to try to resell those.

Unfortunately, your entry was not selected. Oh well. I'm not sure I would have taken advantage even if I was selected. (I would definitely have been tempted...) I'm content to watch on TV. Unless they're sending out wins after losses, I'm out too for the myriad of entries I put in. (still got hopes with the 7 line.) And of course, NLCS/WS drawings, for presumably less seats
  13. The Mets scored 6 less runs than the Nationals in April, and no one else in the division scored more. They scored 97 runs in 23 games or just over 4 runs a game.

  15. Gwreck wrote: Happy to eat some crow here. The point that the Mets would be better off with new ownership remains unassailable. Still, happy to eat some crow. well, they could definitely upgrade ownership, but 'new' covers a wide variety of outcomes. but this is one of those butterfly effects. Anything different about this group this year likely means vastly players/outcomes. Maybe if they were super flush they take the risk on Gomez's bad hip and don't push for Cespedes. Either way it's tilting at windmills. The Wilpons will continue to own the team for a long while.
  16. Lefty Specialist wrote: Matz I need to see a little more of (even though I went with him). He's been okay, but not lights out. But he's a lefty and if there's one person who should NOT be the 4th starter, it's Niese. Colon you get the feeling will do whatever it takes. Start, relieve, bring candy to the bullpen, whatever. An excellent guy to have. And if Boras decides Harvey shouldn't start in the NLCS, he can slot right in. Let's see how Niese does the rest of the season, since he's a good pitcher in general and certainly likely to straighten out (not that a Quality Start in the playoffs is the worst thing) Anyway, Matz or Niese. Gotta get the lefty in there. You could actually make a case for getting time for both. Dodgers best hitters by OPS: Adrian Gonzalez, lefty. Ethier, lefty. Justin Turner, reverse splits, Joc Pederson, lefty.
  17. G-Fafif wrote: Meet your new team on the side, the Philadelphia Phillies. Oh hell, you know them. But did you know you want them to win their next three games? Monday: Nola vs. Zimmermann. Tuesday: Buchanan vs. Strasburg. Wednesday: Morgan vs. Gonzalez. For the uninitiated, Nola is a city in Louisiana, Buchanan was an ineffectual president from Pennsylvania and Morgan had a sister who was known to traipse to the pitcher's mound and steal a kiss. GO YOU PHILLIES! (Bleech.) Morgan's first name is Dexter and he's from Miami. Hopefully he kills the Nats.

I'll probably be at that one. Got tacit approval from my baby-rearing coworker and the Mets are doing some sorta of beerfest so I feel professional obligation. i MAY try to get Sophie another game in, which would be the very last game of the year if so. Playoff lottery results are in Monday to see if I have the option to go to any of those.
  20. When do we swap out Washington for the Dodgers in this scenario? Hell, the Mets are only 1.5 games behind the Cubs for record. If it's NLCS Mets v Cubs that could matter right? (Wikipedia says it's still division winner precedence, so I guess not. Cards have a 7 game lead on Mets for record)
  21. RealityChuck wrote: Don't worry. Just look up Mickey Stanley in 1968. So there's always Lagares. and deGrom. Flores and Tejada are both pretty healthy guys. Granted anything can happen, but in a crazy emergency you put Uribe there or activate Uribe if he's a healthy cut.
  22. I'd be happy to see Benitez supplanted, but I'd give the win to Familia in this game. But then again I put literally no stock in wins so whatever.

  24. Getting pretty close to not having to do this anymore.
