I'm assuming Cabrera at least a month out. Reyes will be back soon but he's not a difference maker. neither is Cabrera. Cespedes will obviously help if he is in fact ready in another 8 or so days but probably not enough if Conforto and d'Arnaud are both going to be disasters while everyone else, minus Walker and Granderson who are merely good, is lucky to be average.

Perhaps the Mets Doctors knew something that no one else did. No, the Mets doctors are hacks who can't read an MRI if it was plastered to the back of a walking boot. That was all about the money, clearly. It could've been about the money. You don't know for sure no matter how disappointing Gomez's career turned out to be over the last 12 calendar months. Actually no, the facts at the time supported a hip issue. The only 'evidence' supporting a money reason was some comments by a Brewers beat reporter. I was being sarcastic.

  9. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I've been sick of Terry for quite a while now. Every silver cloud has a dark lining and the negative impact of the 2015 NL Championship is that it got Terry another contract. He may be a great clubhouse guy, but he's a terrible dugout guy and that's nothing new. I'm ready for the next guy, whoever it is. He's a middling dugout guy. Maybe better than that if you're just comparing it to the other 29 guys and not to theory. I liked, for the most part, how he managed late last year and in the playoffs, but surprisingly that probably speaks to the quality of the team. Easier to look good when you're playing with higher probabilities because good moves turn out much better than they do on bat teams, making even your good process look bad because of results and lack of talent. Take last night. Many kill the Mets/Collins for 'playing short'. So having a guy like Ty Kelly on the bench to pinch hit for d'Arnaud, which I vehemently disagree with, is what you play with a 'full roster' for. damned if you do, damned if you don't. But under no circumstances should they fire him now. They're not losing because of him, they're losing because of a ton of injuries and prospects that a lot of people had faith in not panning out. Firing him midseason might prevent them from doing the real due diligence in hiring a new guy. We might get stuck with a (probably downgrade) in Wally Backman or Dick Scott. I'd give it to Teufel myself, were they to release Collins right now, but even that is probably not the best manager the Mets can find for 2017. Mid-season replacement is how we got stuck with Jerry Manuel somehow.
  10. The Mets aren't desperate to get rid of David though. Some certainty at the position would be nice (hey, get that DH) but Wright was playing well. It's about whether or not he can get back on the field. Whether this additional injury keeps him from being able to do that, or saps his production further to the point of not being good. It's much the same with Prince though his injuries actually made him bad this year so it's more of a gamble to put the hobbled player back out there. The surprise guys are the ones like Gil Meche or Michael Cuddyer who end up leaving money on the table because they just don't have the drive anymore.
  11. Mets record by starter: w/ Colon 14-8 w/ Thor 13-8 w/ deGrom 11-9 w/ Matz 10-10 w/ Verrett 3-8 w/ Harvey 6-11

For example if you google... zimmo site:thecranepool.net ...you get a nice return of possible clicking options. yeah, that's an awesome underappreciated thing. A lot of times you're better off doing that than trying to use the sites built-in search.
  13. what makes it really easy is how well we label these thread subjects.
  14. Yankees didn't deserve a great player like that. Beltran either for that matter. Abusing them. Anyway, I doubt we really end up knowing the truth of the dealings behind this 'transfer' to the front office. I mean, A-Rod's an intelligent guy and a great baseball mind and if that means he wants to stay in the game, great, but is this the best avenue for him to do that? Or was there an unspoken agreement that he's the next manager, here hang out here and 'advise' while it opens up. (I'd reach out right now and offer him Terry's job, and i don't particularly dislike Terry) From a baseball standpoint the front office job doesn't really matter right? He's released, and any contract he signs with another team is basically minimum with him getting the regular pay from the Yankees? It's not like they bribed him off the team by giving him his money and letting him pretend he can sign a 2/30 contract elsewhere next year right?
  15. Edgy MD wrote: I sure am reluctant to making a big deal out of a whispering campaign about what a guy does in his leisure time, but it's the second time he's got hit with a key injury in the late innings of a game after illustrated reports of him spending the morning on the links, leaving the Mets in the rough. key phrase there is 'illustrated reports' he plays golf ALL THE TIME. The media just likes to paint a picture. That he could play golf and theoretically walk without pain is just more evidence for the idea that the Mets were probably right to take the gamble that he could play and DH through it. When he initially hurt it the Mets had Granderson hitting decently, Lagares maybe not horrible and that's about it. They needed outfielders. It's not like if they DL'd him and brought up Nimmo and his .616 OPS he would've won them more games.
  16. I'm still torn about what seems to be a marked improvement by Cespedes with the Mets. I kind of expected him to revert more towards career norms and we'd be happy enough to let him opt out and get overpaid by someone else. This version though..I dunno. I still wouldn't want to give him a long contract. Could we convince him to do the exact same contract again? front-loaded 2017 with an opt out? Bruce shouldn't be holding up anyone and shouldn't really be a part of the 'future'. He's no Cespedes replacement. If Conforto doesn't work out and Nimmo doesn't step up and you're looking to shuffle Granderson away, sure. But the way things stand now I'm not comfortable with a Conforto-Nimmo/Lagares/Bruce outfield. Nor a Conforto/Granderson/Bruce outfield from a defensive standpoint. No matter what the Mets do with this collection of players, there still seems to be that 'who plays CF and is this a disaster defensively?' question. Your three best outfielders are Cespedes, Granderson and Bruce and none of them really should be playing center. Granderson is really the only lock right now. You can build some flexibility by moving him (Probably in the offseason so the acquiring club can utilize the QO/draft pick if the CBA stays similar) but that requires getting back some OF certainty somewhere. Same could be said for Bruce too, who obviously is going to play.
  17. Mets have been unlucky and the National have been lucky. d'Arnaud will round into form and make all the difference. The RISP numbers will round out and the Mets will start scoring in bunches again. They'll rattle off 8/11 and 15/21 somewhere along the way into that first Nats series in September. Mets will close ground and pounce during the final 6 Nats games. That's where it's at.
  18. Vic Sage wrote: i'm hoping Terry doesn't bat Bruce 3rd again. He doesn't make enough contact for that slot. I'd rather he went with something like this: deAza - cf Walker - 2b Loney - 1b Bruce - Rf Flores - 3b Conforto - Lf d'Arnaud - C Reynolds - SS Really should get Granderson in there. but it'll be Cespedes 3rd - DH probably.
  19. I'd honestly rather Puig than Bruce and I'd have given up as much for him. Can't help but think the crap the Dodgers have pulled with him has been detrimental, I bet he'd love a change of pace and would love it here.

Dilson is TWENTY YEARS OLD. 2014-2016. Dilson Herrera gave the Mets 0.9 fWAR. Jay Bruce gave the Reds -0.2 fWAR.

  23. depth, maybe Niese can refind something with Warthen. Bastardo sucks and they'll probably acquire a waiver reliever anyway. Decent trade.
  24. Mets were very down on Herrera.
  25. Lefty Specialist wrote: Dunno, I see Bruce as a kind of redundancy. There are too many outfielders already, and a Cespedes/Granderson/Bruce outfield is scary beyond belief. I was hoping they'd shop Neil Walker for something to restock the farm with, then bring up Dilson, who's rotting in Vegas. Walker's decent and they're gonna, CBA-willing, get a comp pick for him next year to restock with. I'd have liked to see Dilson a billion times by now though.
