"They know Murph as well as Murph knows them. It's a situation where they got Murph tonight, but Murph's gotten them many, many, many, many, many, many times." What a jackass. I can't wait for the Dodgers to beat them in the NLDS preserving WSH's record of never winning a playoff series. And today I get to sit among their stupid, unknowledgeable, craft beer swilling, Blackberry checking, frontrunning fans. There will be a loud and vocal Mets contingent, don't worry.
  3. The nitpicking over fired/quit is dumb. He didn't have a contract and the season was over. He's no more a Mets employee than I am. Though prior to yesterday he probably had a better shot at a being a future Mets employee. If I had to wager on it, I'd say Backman was like "Am I the Mets manager next year? No? Then fuck it all, don't ask me back." It kinda makes sense. Say nice things about the guy who's job you wanted on the way out, but badmouth everyone else. I'd be surprised, no matter what happens, if Terry isn't back now. Also, good. I had no desire to see Backman manage, if they were going to oust Terry and just hand the job off internally, I'd be fine with Teufel. Maybe even prefer him. I don't see what Backman thinks he has to gain here. He could've made his desire to manage known to other teams easily this offseason while still praising the Mets and praising their success as a reason why he's blocked. basically he's all "Collins is a great manager but fuck the Mets for not giving me his job."
  4. Gsellman is 3 years younger, so I trade Lugo.
  5. HahnSolo wrote: If we are guaranteed to play in the WC game, but have no chance at the division, I throw Thor in the WC game whether it is home or away. yeah, this. Let Lugo pitch. Lugo's a great guy to pitch against the Phillies anyway. He's got great movement on at least some of his pitches and the Philles don't walk, and certainly won't walk on the last day of the season. I could see him striking out 13 in a 1:54 hour complete game. Thor is by far the best pitcher on the team* right now, factoring in the fatigued deGrom. The advantage of having him pitch in the game that guarantees you 3 more, 1 of which he can pitch, is so vastly superior to the possibility that he could get you home field, even if it didn't require the other teams to lose. And then he's back on pace to pitch game one of the NLCS if they needed. *best pitcher in the league.
  6. Man, Duda coming back would be awesome.

I was just starting to enjoy the full night's sleep again too. Maybe I'll make Ceetarette get up with Ceetarette2. I'm assuming taking her to Opening Day and leaving the wife with the possibly weeks old newborn is not a suggested activity.

Especially seeing how unlikely it is that I'll get to many, if any, games next year. Why is that? Is Ceetarella expecting a sibling? Was it Ceetarella or Ceetarette? I keep forgetting. But yes, in March. Probably even going to miss Opening Day!
  9. Freeman's having a great year. He's actually been worth as much as Daniel Murphy.

  12. I wouldn't call that common wisdom. I don't know if people were saying that. I'm sure you can find people ignorantly mouthing off about just about anything if you look.
  13. Edgy MD wrote: I'd be happy to cite sources if you can reel it in a little. I don't really need sources, anyone that was using single-injury anecdotal evidence to make sweeping generalizations about pitching injuries isn't really worth reading on the topic.
  14. Edgy MD wrote: Another empty and obnoxious argument. Explain to me again please about what zero chance means. as opposed to your straw man argument that you're always accusing me of using?
  15. I've embarrassingly only been to one game. I'd like to take Ceetarette out to one this year, gonna have to be either of those Sundays I suppose, but the 18th is Oompahfest at Plattdeutsch so that leaves the 25th. Though I wanted to get up to the Renn Faire, and apple picking.. Oof. Maybe I should play hooky from work and just go to a night game and leave early.

  17. I haven't read up on this, just saw the headline and thought: isn't that special. A sideshow. That's all we need. There's no chance he plays on the big club in '16, right? there's no chance he plays on the big club ever. Well, it's very unlikely that he'll play for the Mets, but of course there's a chance. But it should go without saying that he won't play for them in 2016. There are only 22 games left. He can't possibly be ready to play before the season ends. I was rounding to the nearest .001 percent or so, but sure very few things are absolutely zero. But this doesn't really rate much higher than say the Mets moving to Portland next season as something even worth discussing.

  19. Smart of the Nats to keep him out of the playoffs all those years ago. really kept him healthy.
  20. keeping my Twitter Tebow mute filter in place. Parade him around all the minor leagues desperate for ticket sales if you like. Hell, woo back bitchy Buffalo with him. I just don't need to hear about garbage publicity stunts in my baseball chatter.
  21. outside the race, the Twins were formally eliminated last night.
  22. a. Bartolo Colon b. Granderson c. Carlos Torres
  23. Frayed Knot wrote: P.S. the strangest stat of the year has to be Neil Walker's total of just 9 doubles. This from a guy who had averages just shy of 29/per over the previous six seasons. There's an idea, worked into xFIP for instance, that FB/HR rate is somewhat random. So Walker's HR spike is probably tied to his low double rate. Sometimes they carry over, sometimes they don't. It's something to think about when projecting Walker for next year anyway. Or perhaps there's something to the juiced ball theory this year, and guys with solid 'warning track' power that were blasting doubles are getting more and more over the wall (Daniel Murphy?)
  24. Frayed Knot wrote: IIRC, we were also told that De Aza couldn't play CF either. And that his speed had 'dried up' or something. I love our broadcast, but every once in a while I get a strong whiff of pushing the narrative, and it seemed like early this season Gary took every opportunity to imply De Aza was suddenly slow as molasses. I voted 'like' for this one. I'd probably bump it up to love now that he's thrived and been decent defensively too. Swapped some walks for some power, and he's under team control for 2 more years (1 and an option) at a ridiculously reasonable for an above average SS at $8.5ish per.
  25. batmagadanleadoff wrote: Vic Sage wrote: They should have skipped deGrom again. He's either throwing it down the middle or walking guys. He's probably bewildered, too. I hope that's kinda what it is -- that he has mechanical problems, rather than being fatigued and needing some rest. Because history sez that pitchers that are kinda run down in September don't recover that same season, even with extra rest. like Jacob deGrom, who struggled last September... ..and then pitched some great postseason games. Granted, a lot of that September struggle was luck whereas this August he's been a little more wild. It's just not always easy to see what's fatigue and what's just a little out of whack.
