  1. Considering this was a Craig Carton interview, well.. I like how they paraphrased Carton's questions in the article. I can just imagine how leading they were. This just feels like lingering jealousy that they went a different way at SNY. Bet you could get Bobby Ojeda to make similar allusions.
  2. 45. Conforto.
  3. It's 2016 and the league is freaking loaded. Not enough to actually pay minor leaguers, but to pre-book some hotel rooms? come on. You guys always stay at the same hotels anyway, you don't think if Milwaukee gets a playoff berth that downtown Hyatt isn't going to damn well make sure they have the rooms available for the AL team whether it's 1267 or 345?
  4. I think they should all go back to work on Thursday and move that off day to early April and try to set it up so all teams can go twice, or more, through the pitching rotation with everyone on an extra days of rest. Maybe the slower ramp up in the colder months will help with injuries. (I know scheduling doesn't always make this easy to work) Otherwise do whatever. Hell, go back to rotating WS home field. Give it to the league not hosting the ASG. whatever. Just don't go to record because the AL has a slight advantage due to a regular DH (or do this and get the DH in the NL). Or make the first decider head to head record. There's a reasonable chance the teams have played already that season.
  5. I would've brought in Colon to pitch to Ortiz. Just to give the stat guys something to do. "The first time these guys faced off, 56% of the All-Star's were in diapers"

What is "it"? the rule that you have to touch/hold the bag. Zvon wrote: Why don't they just make it if a runner is on first and there's a ground ball that an infielder catches cleanly, boom, automatic double play. [ /] That's really the only way they can assure no one gets hurt at 2nd base during the attempt. Or you could just continue to penalize people that slide in order to make contact with the fielder. It's a non-contact sport, and you're not allowed to interfere with the fielders in other situations. Why the interpretation changed to allow it at second and home is absurd anyway. Why not barrel into the first baseman then? Good chance he drops it on a close play that you hit him just as he catches it, barreling past the bag (but that's fine, it's first base, you're still safe)
  9. It keeps a runner from just barreling over the base and taking out the fielder behind it.
  10. batmagadanleadoff wrote: I think the rule merely requires the possibility of contact with the bag, not actual real contact. Werth couldn't meet any of those two tests in any event. This is a technicality. Name me a situation where a guy is able to, and attempts to, touch the bag and doesn't actually contact the bag.
  11. he moved is body so the slide was to the left, towards Cabrera. Cabrera didn't just fall down.
  12. no, he has to actively be able to, and try to, touch the bag. he can't alter his path. He can't fling his upper body at a fielder or aim his feet above the knee. He has to be sliding like he's intending to reach the bag and stay on it like he would if he was safe.
  13. well he's out, so no, he walks away. But he has to be able to, which means he has to stop moving. I guess he could pop up and just keep going to the dugout. if you're ABLE to stay on the bag, and you ATTEMPT to stay on the bag, then you're on the bag. Werth was not able to stay on the bag.
  14. TransMonk wrote: Yeah, I took the timeline to mean four months before he could even pick up a baseball. But the recovery time after that is a true unknown. I'm advising Matt to have the surgery. I don't understand why he would wait. I guess he figured if he could pitch like he has the last 40 innings or so (3 ERA or whatever) than he can play and pitch and participate in the postseason. Or even better if the shots could alleviate some of the problem and he could do better. Then he'd be participating in the postseason at the expense of early next year, but who knows what next year brings.

Frayed Knot wrote: - and that the runner has to 'try to maintain' contact with the base, another subjective concept which can go any number of ways I think this is to prevent the fielder from bumping him off. Run at the bag, slide at the bag, reach the bag. stay on the bag. batmagadanleadoff wrote: Isn't a runner allowed to slide into second and hit the bag with his hand? as long as he hangs on, which would be tough, because you're supposed to be sliding at the bag and if you're going past it on either side, you probably altered your path to get to the fielder.
  16. he slid to hit the fielder rather than the base. Had he been sliding for the base, he wouldn't have overslid it. it's only a bona fide slide if (3) is able and attempts to remain on the base (except home plate) after completion of the slide; and it's really simple. DON'T TRY TO HIT THE FIELDER. You may try to get on the bag and if the fielder is there, you can stake your claim, but otherwise DON'T TRY TO HIT THE FIELDER. It's not really a contact sport.
  17. 4 months is the recovery time from the surgery in terms of his body, but in terms of baseball there are I guess plenty of wild cards to work through.

You root for the laundry. sure, but leaving it in the shadows allows it to continue. The jock culture and the hero worship and the covering our eyes of things we don't want to see. it happens all the way down the line. Maybe if more professional athletes are held to task, if Baseball isn't shy about dragging the discretions into the light, (and I don't mean Harvey sleeping with two consenting women, or drinking a lot) maybe college athletes will start thinking twice about treating the women on campus as a perk of their scholarship and high school guys won't harass and abuse and chase away fellow female athletes and more middle school girls will stick with sports because they actually feel welcome.

  20. Edgy MD wrote: Very interesting how they're going to try and get those last six outs. Ideally, it's a quick jobbie by Reed and Familia, but they might have to use Goeddel or Lugo. Reed has been icing on the bench for a while now. I would've used Reed in the 7th and Lugo in the 8th, but whatever.

I apologize for my strong language. i imagine that'd be my response to people that want to cut me open too. Generally won't hurt any timetable to give it a month or two either.
  22. TransMonk wrote: Also, the SNY guys are now talking like Wheeler is now "if" instead of "when" in 2016. So much for the pitching depth. Probably always was. People were way too 'sure' about that for someone that hadn't thrown yet. But the hope is still there for August it's just you can't really bank on no setbacks.
  23. Personally I take nothing from Kernan's armchair psychiatrist act, especially when he mentions the media interactions. Maybe Harvey's wound too tight, wouldn't be the first guy, but plenty of guys actually thrive that way. Double-standard. I'd need to hear something beyond "I think he needs to loosen up" before I believed it was causing issues, especially in the wake of an actual medical issue that seems like it has a much larger chance of causing mental or physical harm. Or maybe he should let loose like his idol Jeter and demand apologies for tweeting about tickets he gets.
  24. and suddenly it's not the longest HR in Citi Field history anymore.
