Sad to hear.
Life can be so fragile. We have to enjoy and cherish our time while we can, because tomorrow is never guaranteed. I lost a good friend to a sudden heart attack 2 weeks ago today. He was 62 and left a wife and two sons, the youngest a sophomore in college.
I'm not overly concerned with Bichette's slow start. He is already coming around. He just went 6-18 with 2 doubles and 3 RBIs in the 4 game series against the Giants.
Bo is known for going with the pitch and hitting to all fields. In both the Pittsburgh & St. Louis series he seemed to be hitting almost exclusively to right and right-center fields. In the San Francisco series, he started pulling the ball more. This would seems to indicate that he is seeing the ball and identifying pitches better which allows him to react and get the head out quicker.
Senga was solid again today in his second start. Pitched 5.2 innings giving up 2 earned runs on 5 hits (4 singles & 1 double) and 2 walks while striking out 7.
Very early, but very encouraging.
Wayne Garrett went deep in the 1973 World Series. Since Jim "Catfish" Hunter is the only HOF in the A's rotation, I'm going to guess Garrett got to Catfish.
Soto characterized the MRI results as showing a mild calf strain. If that can safely be categorized a a Grade 1 calf strain, then the general recovery time is 2-3 weeks. I would rather the Mets play it safe and just put him on the 10 Day IL, rather than rush things and potentially makes matters far worse.
Maybe collectively insulting them gets them going. Great to see the offense come alive. I just hope they didn't score a weeks worth of runs in one game then revert back to their 1-2 runs a game for the next week.
Hoping is only a mild (Grade 1) strain. The fact that he remained in the game as a baserunner after it occurred is a sign it likely wasn't a more severe strain (such as Senga suffered in 2024).. Still, a Grade 1 strain will likely cost him 2-3 weeks for recovery.
Crossing my fingers and holding my breath.
From most accounts I have seen, Konnor Griffin was considered the best prospect in all of baseball and the consensus was that it was by a wide margin. He is huge for a shortstop and has prodigious power. It will be interesting to see how he does.
I am not too worried about Bichette. I expect he will hit, as he has practically his entire career. I think Polanco will be okay, not great, but okay. Semien appears to be good defensively, but offensively he appears to be
Lindor also was picked off 1st base so badly that he didn't even make an attempt to return to the bag. He just froze and was tagged out.
This team needs to wake up and get their act together.
You have to remember that much of their early offensive production on opening day against Skenes was primarily due to poor defense by Oneil Cruz. First he misplayed a fly ball by Baty that should have been caught into a "triple" to allow 3 runs. Had Cruz simply caught Baty's rather routine fly ball, the Mets would not have scored Soto from third on a sac fly. Then he whiffed on a routine fly that he lost in the sun. Had Cruz made to routine catches that a MLB CF should make, the Mets would have scored one run (rather than 5) and Skenes would have escaped the 1st inning with a 2-1 lead.
Since that first game in which they were essentially gifted 4 runs and an very early exit by Skenes, the Mets have scored 10 runs in 50 innings.
Top of the order for the Mets. Time to wake up the bats and score some. At least Soto gets a plate appearance, which is good since he pretty much is the offense.
Good call by Zeile stating that the best time to run on Stanek is when he is ahead in the count because he often throws the splitter in the dirt. Next pitch with 1-2 count Stanek bounces a splitter. In the dirt.
Meanwhile, Semien strikes out. Alvarez gets 1st on catchers interference. Robert now in scoring position. The Mets need a hero here to drive him in and break this deadlock.
The Mets offense is really pathetic.
Gary calls a HR by Soto one pitch before he hits a sky scraper in the RF corner.
Mets 1 Cardinals 0 in the top of the 6th
In all seriousness. The good news is that Senga pitched pretty well, which is encouraging.
The bad news is that the offense was pretty bad. I like that this team does not seem to srike out as much as previous Mets teams*, but a lot of weak contact as a team.
*=I realize it is a small sample (5 games), but this line up tends to take pitches and make contact more regularly than last years team.
