  2. Mazzilli is 27 already. I don't think this deal means much of anything.
  3. I can legitimately see this being a playing-time issue. You want to get Nimmo ABs, one way or the other, and he's not getting them up here right now. And at the same time, with the starters going five innings, you're going to need as many fresh bullpen arms as you can have. As GF noted, as long as Tebow is in the organization, the "religious" argument doesn't hold water at all.

  5. Edgy MD wrote: It drives me bananas that guys aren't bunting against the shift all the bloody time. Are we really supposed to just shrug and say "well done" when Jay Bruce rips a liner into right and gets thrown out by an infielder playing 100 feet into the outfield? Exactly. Let the Dudas of the world practice bunting and just drop one down that line every goddamn time. That's why I hate the possibility of "legislating against the shift." NO NO NO. If the defense wants to shift, let them; you just try to beat them and they'll stop.
  6. This drives me BANANAS. Why were you shifting, Twins? To stop the guy from getting on base. Well, he beat you and got on base. So screw you.
  7. I thought "Super Joe" came from the fact that he was like 99 for 100 off Randy Johnson with like 70 home runs. (I could be slightly off on the stats.)
  8. Beautiful day for baseball again - definitely warmer than yesterday. Offensively, the Mets just had nothing today. They didn't really hit anything particularly hard. They kept getting guys on, but never really felt like they were threatening to break out. You know who looked terrible, though, was Dexter Fowler, who looks like his timing is off or something. He clearly struggled.
  9. I'm in 128 tomorrow if anyone's around.
  10. Beautiful, if chilly, day for a ballgame. Spent most of the day wandering around with friends because sitting was just a little too cold. Really, really long lines at the main gate for a non-sellout, and seemingly even longer lines for concessions. Maybe they're just not in midseason form there yet. Build a Bear giveaway is super cute, and I resisted three (!) offers to purchase it off me. Sorry, other dads. Gotta get there early. We were eating Fuku out in the CF Kid Zone when my buddy looks up at the screen and says "we could use a homer here" just as Wacha goes into his windup and WHAMO Cespedes goes yard. We went bananas. Going back tomorrow, solo if anyone's around to chat, and there's an extremely good chance that I'm going to take home one of those gigantic lineup Topps cards from last year for the new office.
  11. Frayed Knot wrote: "reached base 1,000 times more than DiMaggio" (and, yes, he means Joe) kind of leaps out at you. Rusty had an incredible career, and no, he's not a HOFer, and yet: 13th in games played 35th in AB 44th in times on base (And in all of those cases, everyone who's eligible and not steroid-connected ahead of him is in. I know those are "longevity stats" and not "Hall stats," but still, he's 152nd in HR also.) PLUS all the off the field stuff. A legend.
  12. I'll be there somewhere today. Haven't bought our tickets yet.
  13. Mr. Met is going to get my vote pretty much every time, especially over whatever 2004 is.
  14. One down, 161 to go. Good show, gentlemen.

I have Tomas Nido as 1043 at the end of last year's thread --- viewtopic.php?f=1&t=25490&p=706705&hilit=+met+count+#p706705 --- but the UMDB says 1045, so I'm confused. And that appears to be because Gonzo and Frazier are already on the list as 1044 and 1045.

  21. Two Rusty games stand out in my memory. The switching from LF to RF one, obviously, and a game-winning pinch HR late in '84 or '85.
  22. Giancarlo Stanton, in his first MFY AB in Toronto, hits the second pitch he sees all the way to Hudson Bay. He's going to hit 90 home runs in Yankee Stadium this year.
  23. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: The lineup I saw had Syndy hitting 8 and Rosario 9, giving Cespedes the "double leadoff" Which means we'll be up 5-0 nothing by the end of the second inning, which is cool.
  24. That crazy Mickey confounding tradition and batting what looks like a cleanup hitter second, and what looks like a two-hole hitter cleanup. Also breaking a streak of three opening day starts for d'Arnaud. Mike Matheny has a surprise of his own, starting José Martinez at first, moving Carpenter across the diamond to third, and leaving Jedd Gyorko on the bench.
