Same with Reyes/Wright now; if they got hit by buses tomorrow, they're not HOFers. But Murphy was, at least to 12-year-old me.
  2. If you told me in 1988 that Dale Murphy wouldn't even sniff the Hall, I would have kicked you in the nuts.
  3. Niemann would make a lot of sense as the Mystery Maligner, actually, for the same reasons as HoJo.

  5. Good to see the lack of support for Bernie.
  6. Sucks.
  7. And for all we know, the elephant's already a better hitter than Jason Bay.
  8. The more I look at Morris, the more meh I am. I've always been so confident he's a yes, but maybe not.

  10. Full disclosure: I love these guys. You know? I love these guys too. I like how they have different hats in the roster thread. I like picking up cheapo autographed cards in the offseason of them (just picked up Ramon Ramirez and Quintanilla) in the hopes that they'll someday make The Binder.
  11. Not THE Jeff Stevens and Corey Wimberly?!?! http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/mets/post/_/id/37379/mets-sign-pair-to-minor-deals

This is an extreme inconvenience as he plays second base, and many runners end up safe because he cannot position himself correctly. Every once in a while, you catch one of those unpoliced entries. Funny.
  13. Valadius wrote: A veritable crusader for the people's business, I am. I've been popping in every so often, but I didn't see myself in the draw anywhere. Did I get assigned subjects? Check the second post in the thread; take a couple of days and throw something together?
  14. We haven't seen Val in weeks. I'll give him until the end of this week and then move on.
  15. Edgy DC wrote: Which is why I think award shares -- at least for my imaginary "vote" -- are important. Did a guy dominate enough that he got recognized repeatedly among the best players in the league? Then that counts. Well then we get to the jump-off-the-Empire-State situation. It kind of washes your hands of having to think about it yourself. Wrong. It's confirming what I remember, and validating my opinion that Jim Rice was a dominant player in the AL from the late 70s into the mid 80s.

  17. This is the problem with lowering standards. Jim Rice was a horrible selection for the Hall of Fame, but now people have a new "low" to compare borderline/undeserving players to. See also: Sutter, Bruce; Dawson, Andre. Rice is tied for 29th in MVP Shares. Every player above him who's NOT in the HoF is not yet eligible (Bonds, Pujols, ARod, Rose, Griffey), except for Dave Parker, who I think should be in as well. I'm not saying that he's not "borderline," necessarily, but he's definitely on the correct side of that line now.

Except none of the others played center field at all, much less at an elite, game-changing level (Griffey isn't at this level during the last decade-plus, since his all-world prime preceded the period we're talking about; besides, he's a surefire HOFer). Besides that, he's put up 293 steals and counting... as the most efficient basestealer in history. Put it this way, he's got a better case than Bernie Fucking Williams (and probably Andre Dawson and Jim Rice), and only a slightly worse case than Tim Raines. I've never thought of him as HOF material, but it's not a stretch. Certainly a better case than Bernie already, even with a few years left, and Dawson is his B-R closest comparison through age 34.

  21. Dave Hudgens said he'd fix him in ten minutes.
  22. 2 years probation, community service.

  25. Vaguely remember him as a Brave. Made us look stoopid in September 2006, pitching eight innings of one-hit ball, while contributing a hit, walk, and two runs on the offensive side.
