Kids that age can run a lot better than they can do almost anything else. I can't say as how I can remember for sure, but it seems to me that stealing wasn't part of the game until more like age 13 or so. Seriously. The stealing thing always bothered me as a coach because nobody had a catcher who could throw anyone out. So basically every baserunner got second -- and sometimes third -- roughly automatically.

Greg Bird is constantly hurt, Chris Carter suxxx, and Matt Holiday needs to DH. Duda for OF prospect Clint Frazier. You've got an hour to get back to us Cashman. That's right. Forgot they were contenders.

  5. Seriously, Mets? You couldn't throw your local school a fucking bone, late in the draft? Not even for a guy who was the conference player of the year? Bleh.
  6. G-Fafif wrote: Although I limited my parameters to home games, a special place in hell is reserved for June 10, 2000, at MFYS II: MFYs 13 Mets 5, the game that sent Bobby J. Jones in search of the Norfolk Miracle Cure. Lasting memory: some MFY a-hole (I know, redundant) barks at Jason Tyner, "HEY, TYNER, TIME FOR YOU TO MAKE AN ERROR!" Tyner made an error. Ooh. I was at the Clemens/Piazza headhunting game at YS too. That was pretty awful.
  7. Centerfield wrote: at home, these losses are the easiest to digest. You turn the TV off. Go do something else. Check in, if they make it close, you come back to it. If not, you go about your business. But when you are at the game, you are stuck. Made to suffer every laborious pitch thrown by the worst guy in your bullpen. We went to the Father's Day game last year when Teheran nearly threw a no-hitter. I was trying to teach my then-7yo how to keep score, and she kept asking "what happens when the Mets get a hit?" and that moment just never came. That was torture.
  8. I'm tempted to say Game 5 in 2015 because of the outcome, but realistically, it was this one: http://leaptoad.com/mets/gamedetail.php?gameno=7552&tabno=D My last Shea game, which was emotional enough, and capped by a soul-crushing loss in a huge spot when the Mets strand Murphy after a leadoff triple in the bottom of the ninth and then lose in 10.
  9. Been keeping half an eye on this today, and it looks like the sex offender from Oregon State, Luke Heimlich, hasn't been picked yet and we're in the middle of the ninth round already. Gonna be interesting to see if someone just can't pass up the so-called "talent" this far down the draft and just deal with the headaches.
  10. Insta-analysis from Jim Callis at MLB.com: Peterson is a polished lefty who took a step forward this season, striking out 20 in a game against Arizona State while ranking among the NCAA Division I leaders in strikeout-to-walk ratio. His low-90s fastball and slider are his two best pitches. He can also mix in a curveball and changeup. I can see him getting quickly to the big leagues as a mid-rotation starter. CALL HIM UP, SANDY

  12. My whole frickin' team has been hurt more or less all season and I just don't know what to do with myself. I need to start clearing house.
  13. I thank him for his service and hope he never records another out in a major league uniform.

It's just for now until your arm returns to full strength, and hey, Smoltz won 200 games, saved 150, and drinks his beer from a "Hall of Fame"-emblazoned mug, so we're thinking big here." You know, this might actually make some sense.

  20. Let 'em go, Sandy. Get something of good value for them and set the market.
  21. Gwreck wrote: Seems like it's been a lot longer than 5 years. http://archives.thecranepool.net/17900/f14_t17982.shtml I wrote it like I was kidding, but I literally high-fived the dog because there was nobody else in the room.
  22. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: This is "funny" but totally not funny. That the Mets just put any party-patrol dumbass in the clothing of its most recognizable branding icon is just unconscionably stupid and reckless. They cut every corner even on their own identity. I hate to say this but the Phillies would never do this. They had 1 Phanatic for years. This, definitely this. I work with our mascot team here, there are just things you don't do, and this is pretty high on the list.
  23. Frayed Knot wrote: Attendance woes at Yanqui Stadium The LOL here isn't at the Yanx for drawing fewer people as the article talks about various aspects of drawing fans in today's game not unique to the them specifically. No, the real LOL is for those Yanx fans forever talking about how much better they liked the mid-90s team and their home-grown 'core four' as compared to than the FA-heavy team of the early 21st century. But the problem with that claim is that the 2000's teams drew about double what the mid & late '90s teams did. And now that they've got what they were clamoring for, a younger, more home-grown, AND winning squad, they're not showing up as much. The real secret here is that they secretly liked ARod and Clemens even if they were reluctant to say so out loud My favorite response to the "Yankees Having Troubles Getting Butts In Seats" headline was "Butts, yes. Assholes, no."
  24. So -- it's the end of May, and we're nine back of Washington and eight back in the Wild Card race. Some end-of-season-FAs that might be appealing to a contender, maybe, if we hide some lines on the back of their baseball cards: Bruce (FA) Granderson (FA) Reyes (FA) Cabrera ($2M buyout/$8.5M option) Walker (FA) Reed (FA) Duda (FA) Blevins ($1M buyout/$7M option) Salas (FA) Rene Rivera (FA) plus a bunch of arb-eligibles like Harvey/deGrom/Flores/d'Arnaud. Do you back up the truck, have a fire sale, and restock?
