  1. I looked it up, so I won't answer. Just wanted to add that Darren Oliver is 4 relief wins away from joining that exclusive (cough, cough) club.
  2. Screw that Bronx shit. My mom grew up in the Bronx. Hated the MFYs. Rooted for the Giants. No excuses.
  3. Honorable mention goes to Tom Seaver 198 wins. Finished one win shy of Club 99.
  4. Last summer my daughter had a soccer tourney in Va Beach. The last day there, a bunch of us happened upon a Tides game in Norfolk. I noticed Cubbage sitting behind us in a Rays hat and a clipboard. He's a scout. He was so noticeable to me. Between innings we said hello and he was nice as can be.

TransMonk May 21 2009 07:29 AM Francisco Rodriguez, who teamed with Schoeneweis in the Angels bullpen in 2002 and 2003, said he was speechless when he heard the news. Im sad for him, Rodriguez said. I cant imagine what hes going through right now, all the pain hes going through. Former Mets teammate Ryan Church added: Hes always been able to battle through adversity because hes had cancer before. Everybody needs to be thinking about him and his family and just pray, pray a lot. Mets manager Jerry Manuel said he still considers Schoeneweis part of his family. I mentioned that to our people, that weve got to reach out and do all we can to help support him at this time, Manuel said. And whatever he needs from us, well be here for him. Poor Scott. 6. ="Mendoza Line"]]Jody Gerut homer on the third pitch in Citi Field. Don't know that I'd count this. Major league hitters sometimes hit home runs off major league pitchers. Stuff happens to everyone. On the other hand, there's no excuse for walking Jamie Moyer or Shane Victorino with the bases loaded. That unlikely leadoff home run ended the hype and excitement of the opening game. I didn't expect it and neither did Gary Cohen. It spelled loss from the start and was the beginning of the first Yips incident that found Mike looking at new Citi Field on his back. No chance a Met like Wright or Beltran could have christened the new place. It was so typical Mets to let the air out right from the start.
  7. To go with the Pelfey thing, he fell off the mound twice, once to the ground. Longing for the days of Keith Hernandez, we saw Tatis and Reed throwing home. Jody Gerut homer on the third pitch in Citi Field. Saw a line drive go through Wright's legs a few weeks back. Don't see that too often.

  11. A few years ago, I painstakingly put together such a list. But I made the regrettable mistake of not saving it on a zipdrive and of course my computer crashed and it was lost. I had dates, opponents, stadiums and what the player did in his debut. The way I handled tiebreakers, which usually occurred on opening day was to list them by the way they were initially announced pregame. If the Mets opened on the road, I would allow the first batters their debut. If a home game, or after the first inning of an away game, I went by batting order or order of announcement into the game. The Mets opened in St Louis in 1962, therefore Richie Ashburn leading off was considered the number 1 Met by my list. One of these days, I'll do it over again.
  12. When I get over the Wainwright strikeout, then I will concur. On 3-2, I had a flashback. Bennett is no Wainwright. I'd also agree on the daughter thing, if I could get past that Cocoa Puff stuck to his head.
  13. I've met Sammy Drake on several occasions, and he is a very classy guy. Good find Edgy.
  14. The 2005 WS Astros were pretty caucasian too. 4 Dominicans and an American born Orlando Palmiero. Otherwise it was like a team from the 1930s. Even the coaching staff, with the exception of Cruz Sr., and the only AA-Cecil Cooper.
  15. Jason Vargas gets the win in relief today in his Seattle Mariner debut. Yay Sean Green.

Follow this line of reasoning: -'Marauders' makes me think of a'The Manassa Mauler' which was Jack Dempsey's nickname. -To me though, 'Manassa Mauler' sounds more like a wrestler than a boxer. -When I imagine a wrestler who would look like a mauler from a place called Manassa, I get an image in my head of 'The Crusher' from an old Bugs Bunny cartoon... Vic Sage May 04 2009 08:46 AM my 8-year old son plays on the Wolves. He seems to be having fun, despite a dearth of talent, inherited from his old man. My 11-year old girl hasn't been able to play so far this season, due to a broken thumb, but she's almost ready, and chomping at the bit. She has slightly more talent, but more importantly, a passion for the game. My son's passions are known only to him. He started playing soccer this season, and seems to have more aptitude for that. We'll see. And "parental involvement" is a double-edged sword. Its important to be there and supportive, but "intrusive and overbearing" is always just a hair's breath away. But come sign-up day he told me he didn't want to play in a league, just in the yard with me and Fwife instead. Now two of his classmates in day care are playing and I think maybe he is a bit regretful. Oh well, he will have another chance next year. We've been there, we know! metfairy - is MK going to continue with Babe Ruth next year? themetfairy May 04 2009 11:33 AM soup - we're not sure. There's a lot on Activity Island right now, including Boy Scouts and his trombone studies (he has definite plans to be a part of the marching band in high school). He's a good ballplayer, but not the most talented. His biggest asset is that he knows the game so well, but he's often frustrated by the gap between his ability and what he wants to do. If he wants to go into Babe Ruth, we'll let him. But we're not pushing it. If he doesn't play, I see him umpiring - that would keep him involved in the game, and also give him a way to earn some money once he turns 14. What about your Pirate? Is he continuing on? John Cougar Lunchbucket May 04 2009 11:54 AM Baseball or trombone, gotta practice if ya wanna to be among the greats. Just ask me, I turned out to be neither. soupcan May 04 2009 11:58 AM He wants to keep playing. He's not a big kid though, and next year they would go to major league size fields. I think that might be an issue for him unless he has a growth spurt this summer. He already umpires and he really enjoys it. I'm surprised at how decisive he is as an ump. Its like I'm watching a completely different kid. He takes no crap from anybody and is loud, clear and quick when making calls. The money don't hurt either. $30 for calling balls and strikes and $20 for the base ump. Pretty good scratch for a 12 year-old. themetfairy May 04 2009 01:04 PM Our township makes you wait until 14 to ump. But I think the kid would be great at it. He does practice the trombone, and takes private lessons. He also made a regional band this past winter. Benjamin Grimm May 04 2009 01:40 PM I'm managing a softball team of seven- and eight-year-old girls. Last year, in t-ball, I was an assistant coach, but the manager was a shlub who didn't know what he was doing, so I made all the decisions. We've played two games so far, and unofficially won them both. (We're not supposed to keep score, but I've been doing so secretly.) The girls seem to be having fun, the parents have been nice, and I'm having a good time too. Before the night there was a slim possibility that the team could still advance to the next round of the playoffs. That would have required them to win tonight by a margin of four runs or more, and then to get some help from the other teams playing tomorrow night's game. But all contingencies are moot. The Liberty Tax Services Mets won tonight by a score of 3-1. MK caught all six innings and had an RBI in the game. So it's over. But at least they went out on a good note. Let's Go Mets!
  17. My favorite part of that video is when they sing 'mister, you can be a hero" as the camera pans to Koosman. There is an oldtime autograph collector that I know from the Bronx. He's about 70 years old. He's gotten Ty Cobb and Cy Young's autograph when he was a kid. I once mentioned that Ed Sullivan taping to him and he told me he was there out back, alone, and got every Met to sign his WS program for him.

  19. I saw Lupica once at Shea. The man is so small that if he went to Belmont, people would be shaking his hand, thinking he was a retired jockey.
  20. There are two Wilbur Huckles that have telephone listings in the Texas phone directories. Wouldn't it have been easier for Olbermann to call Wilbur to find out what happened that year?
  21. Three white pennants for World Championships and 2 dark (preferably blue) for NL pennants. That's it. (Oops, make that 2 white WS championship pennants. The third one was the Brooklyn Dodgers. I get so confused these days.)

Apparently, to the windswept left-field entrance of Citi Field. The Mets have taken a lot heat from fans angry about the ticket prices and the obstructed views at Citi Field. A vocal minority of fans have also complained that the new $800 million ballpark does not do enough to honor the teams history. The Mets have always been a populist ball club; Bring the kiddies, bring the wife, everyman stars like Ed Kranepool, sign day, etc., James Conley, a Mets fan, said in an e-mail message. The best way to recognize the history of the team is to recognize the close connection to the fan base the Mets club has always enjoyed. Where, other fans complain, are the banners that used to hang inside Shea that could be seen from the escalators? (They were sold at auction.) What happened to the 1969 photo montage that adorned the outside of the right-field stands? (Gone like the stadium.) Where is the bronze statue of Mike Piazza hitting his famous home run in September 2001? (Not on the drawing board yet.) The Mets do nod to their past. On the left-field side of the stadium, there are a dozen or so black-and-white banners of Stengel and Hodges, Tom and Tug, Darryl and Dykstra and other Mets. They are classy photos, but seen by only a fraction of the fans since most people enter through the rotunda near the subway station. The four retired numbers hang on the left-field fence, and the teams championship flags fly on poles in right field. The old home run apple sits near a picnic area in right field, and the skyline from the old scoreboard is above the Shake Shack. The 18,000 bricks on the Fan Walk are touching, and the Jackie Robinson Rotunda is a high-minded tribute, even if Robinson never played for the Mets. But some fans are irked by the teams decision to model Citi Field after Ebbets Field. (The Dodgers left New York long before many of them were born.) A handful of other fans wish the Mets did more to honor the Giants and the Polo Grounds. The Mets are aware of these complaints, including the chatter on sports radio stations. But opening the stadium on time took precedence over adornments. It was something we always intended, but it wasnt given a priority, said Dave Howard, the Mets vice president for operations. Howard said the team was working to add more memorabilia, including a display of Topps baseball cards of Mets from each year since 1962. Banners like the ones outside the stadium could be hung on the concourses inside. The busts in the teams hall of fame, which has not added a member since 2002, could be replaced by plaques with relief sculptures and descriptions. Life-size statues, like the ones at AT&T Park and Busch Stadium, are possible. These additions will take time, though, which means the Mets will have to endure more taunts from their fans. Howard is sanguine. Im never surprised and always encouraged by the passion of Met fans, he said. Its great that people care this much and we listen to it. John Cougar Lunchbucket Apr 23 2009 10:56 AM I can almost see Howard reading his quotes in the paper and saying "I think they bought it." G-Fafif Apr 23 2009 01:20 PM It is great people care this much. I doubt they listen to it.
