Four problems I have with Jeter's 'record': 1) No one knew there was even such a record before last week. 2) Gehrig never played in this stadium and vice versa. Lou's was raized down to the concrete 35 years ago. 3) The only reason 'Jeets' has this record is because poor Lou died young. 4) Who has the most hits at Fenway? Wrigley? Who gives a shit? That's who.
  2. ="Benjamin Grimm"]="Met Hunter"]But now I'm ready for one last run. Geez, I hope it's not the last run. Lol. That came out wrong. I guess being melancholy about Shea is getting the best of me.
  3. ="SteveJRogers"]Soup, what you need is to do what Frank Constanza would do. Just relax and scream: SERENITY NOW! But remember what Lloyd Braun said. "Serenity now, insanity later" I too am a long suffering fan, who thought 1986 would return to Shea over and over. I didn't suffer too much last year because of the sting of knowing my 1986 came and went in 2006. But now I'm ready for one last run. Bob Murphy lives through his grandson Daniel.
  4. I wrote that because I'd heard that was the Yankees plan once they landed the Scranton rights. Move the team to S.I. The loophole being that they wouldn't need permission because they already had minor league approval. I guess it's not that simple. But I also agree that I'd rather see AA caliber ball.
  5. I say move to either Buffalo or Syracuse, then move the NYPenn team to that city and move the AAA team to Brooklyn.
  6. MAB Celebrity is having a Shea Goodbye card show/signing that weekend. These are the guests listed so far: Art Shamsky Darryl Strawberry Dwight Gooden Edgardo Alfonzo Felix Millan George Theodore Jerry Koosman Robin Ventura Ron Swoboda Rusty Staub Tom Seaver Wally Backman Willie Mays Yogi Berra Jack Fisher I'm guessing at least these players will be in town for the final game.
  7. ="soupcan"]Here's another good one... ="Gary Dunaier"]Before I discovered Flickr and learned how to download photos from the Internet, I used to search Ebay for interesting ballpark photos. Here's a Shea Stadium shot from my collection that's not so old, but it's pretty historic... it's the Montreal Expos' very last moment: October 3, 2004 at 4.23pm... With two men out in the top of the ninth inning, Expos centerfielder Endy Chavez hit a ground ball to second to make the final out. In the photo, First Base umpire Mark Wegner is shown calling Chavez out at first, a simple arm gesture that puts a final wrap on thirty-six years of Major League Baseball in Montreal. And the Met catcher on that final play was Joe Hietpas. Brought in by Art Howe to catch the ninth and have his Moonlight Graham moment.
  8. Most cards were photographed in NY cause Topps operated out of Brooklyn. Any Chicago shots were probably taken from photog George Brace's massive inventory. I say it's Shea.
  9. Steve Somers says that he is pulling down the number on Friday night against St. Louis.
  10. Thanks for clearing that up. I guess holds and saves can only be designated at the end result of the pitcher's appearance.
  11. ="Benjamin Grimm"]Well, that is a blown save, technically, because when he came into the game it was a save opportunity. It only counts as a save opportunity if they intended to pitch Billy for both innings, which I doubt. He was in a hold situation.
  12. Technically Billy didn't blow the save. He gave it up in the 8th, just as Papelbon did.
  13. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Former and future Mets: Steans Mays Seaver Candelaria Jerry Morales Ellis Valentine Willie Montanez I guess the fact that Denny Sommers was local got him the representation. I can barely recall his coaching tenure. Don't forget George Foster and Garry Templeton.
  14. Danny Heep known for 3 things: 1) Ryan's 4,000th K 2) traded for Mike Scott 3) Mets first DH
  15. Whenever somone asks me what my favorite memory of that place is, I always reference Dave Mlicki's masterpiece. And I was there to dump on their fans. The only Subway Series game I ever wanted to attend was the first. I was coaxed into going to one at Shea once. David Wright drilled a walkoff hit off Mo Howard. 2 for 2.
